DRUM FOR OOIlCRETE-MIXING MACHINES.
Application filed February 10, 1928. Serial No. 253,313.
This invention relates to concrete mixing devices of the rotating and tilting variety, that has a single opening for the reception and discharge of the concrete forming material, the object 01 the invention being to provide a mixing device or drum of im-' proved construction, whereby the mixing of the line and coarse material is more rapidly and thoroughly performed than hith erto. v a r The invention is embodied in the-construction and combination of features shown in the accompanying drawing and set forth a in the following description and claims.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective View looking into the interior of the drum.
Figure 2 is a combined side elevation and central section of the drum.
Figure 3 is aview in side elevation showing the drum mounted on a standard and in normal mixing position, preparatory to discharging the mixed contents.
The body of vthe drum is constructed with a frusto-conical upper wall 5, fixed to a bowl portion having oppositely curved walls 6, 6, and opposite flat walls 7, 7, joined to said walls 6, 6, and a diametrical bottom portion 8, thereby forming four corners in the side of the bowl between said flat and curved portions. The flat walls 7, 7, form in effect a peculiar interruption of the con tinuity of the otherwise curved surface of the bowl and it the drum be rotated while its axis is at an angle to the vertical, as for example as seen in Fig. 3, the movement of the material is alternately retarded and speeded by the flat and curved surfaces respectively of the bowl.
Cooperating with the peculiar form of said walls of the bowl are two blades, each composed mainly of two parts, to-wit: an outer part or blade 9 of relatively wide trapezoidal form, roughly, and a long narrow blade, 10, secured thereto and extending therefrom toward the bowl of the drum. The larger part, 9, of the blade is affixed to the wall of the drum to stand at an angle of approximately to the plane of the axis of the drum, and its corner next the wall and mouth of the drum is bent inward, as seen at 9 in the direction of the normal direction of motion of the drum; and the narrow blade 1.0 secured to stand nearly parallel to the well of the and it is curved forwardly in the direction of its motion from the point of its connection with the blade 9, all as best seen in Fig. 1. The said blades are secured to the interior drum by'means of brackets, asshown at 11 and 12, bolted to the blade and drum.
The drum is supported upon a yoke 13 iaving'a spindle fixed on the yoke that enters a tubular bearing let rising from the center of the bottom of the drum. This yoke has at its opposite ends trunnions that'are ournaled m standards 15 so that by swlnging the yoke the drum can be oscillated or tilted as by handles 16 connected with one of the trunnions to different positions for supplying the materials to the drum, mixing and dis charging the same. The drumis also provided with a circumferential rack 17 engagedby a pinion 18 to impartv a rotary motion to the drum. Thetiltingand rotary motions of the drum are effected independently of each other. The construction in respect of the means for tilting and rotating the drum invarious forms/are well known in the art and require no further detailing here.
tion opposite that appearing in Fig, 3. The
drum is then slowly swung over to approximately the horizontal position shownvin Fig. 3, in which position the principal mixing operation takes place. In this position the material is moved back and forth with reference to the mouth and bowl of the drum. In this mixing operation, the concrete material is'carried in the lower portion of the drum (in the substantially horizontal position) in a general way with the motion of the drum, the fiat surfaces of the bowl tending to retard and push the mass of the material towards the mouth of the drum, and the material being lifted by the narrow and wide portions of the blade. When sutliciently elevated, the material slides oil the wide portionoit the blade back again toward the lower side of the bowl, and when the material slides from such larger portion of the blade it falls mostly-upon the wall of the drum in advance of the oncoming opposite blade. The effect on the moist materials is a kneading, stirring and swirling operatioii due to the cooperation of the peculiar form of the blades with the form it its and, eourse, when in. the sub ing opening, the bottom of said drum having curved and flat walls alternating with each other, and a. blade in said drum consisting of a Wide portion fixed in a position inclined to the wall of the drum adjacent to the open ing thereof, and a narrow portion extending from said wide portion to near the bottom of thodrum and curv-edly toward the axis of the drum, means for rotating said drum, and means for tilting the same.
2. In a concrete mixing machine, a mixing drum having a single charging and discharging opening, the bottom of said drum having curved and flat walls alternating with each other, and a blade in said drum consisting of a wide portion fixed in a position inclined to the wall of the drum adjacent to the opening thereof, a portion of said blade next the wall of the drum being bent in the direction of its motion, and a narrow portion extending from said wide portion to near the bottom of the drum, means for rotating said drum and means for tilting the Same.
4:. In a concrete mixing machine, a mixing drum havlng a smgle charging and dischargmg openmg, a blade 1n said drum consisting of a wide portion fixed in a position inclined to the wall of the drum ad acent the opening thereof, and a narrow portion extending from said wide portion to near the bottom of the drum, said narrow portion being more offset from the wall of the drum than said wide portion, means for rotating said drum, and means for tilting the same.
5. In a concrete mixing machine, a mixing drum having a single charging and discharging opening, a blade in said drum con sisting of a. wide portion fixed in a position inclined to the wall of the drum adjacent the opening thereof, and a narrow portion extending from said wide portion to near the bottom of the drum, means for rotating said drum and means for tilting the same, and means in the bottom of the drum for pressing the concrete material toward said opening of the drum when rotated in substantially horizontal position, said wide portion of the blade adapted to return the concrete material toward the bottom of the drum in such horizontal position.
