MECHANICAL TOY.
Application filed October 1, 1927.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanical toys and more particularly to a trapeze toy and its object is to provide a novel and highlyinteresting means of amusement for children and others.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the toy.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the rotary flexible shaft employed, and its connections.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The present toy comprises a plurality of animated doll figures actuated by a flexible rotary shaft and connections, two of the doll figures being made to swing or rotate upon or with a trapeze and a third one to turn or pivot about with an intermittent lifelike movement; rotation of the shaft being made intermittent by a tethered aerial projectile the tether of which Wraps itself about, and unwraps itself from, a pair of stationary uprights spaced apart in the path of movement of the said tether.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a table or base, the ends of which are preferably tapered, said table having a recess 2 formed at its center, said recess being covered by a plate 3 secured tothe table by fastening means 4. A screw-eye 5 extending through the plate 3 is provided with a round head 6 disposed in the recess 2, said screw-eye and head being free to rotate.
An angular wire rod 7 has one end secured to said screw-eye, said rod having a cord 8 secured to its opposite end, said cord carrying the aerial projectile 9. AA doll figure 10 is made fast to said rod 7 just above the screweye 5, the rod 7 extending longitudinally through the doll.

their inner ends bent for disposal and retention in the said sleeves 13, 14, respectively, said arms extending away from the frame 11 in opposite directions and being disposed. substantially at right angles thereto. A trapeze or swing bar 17 having a tail piece 17a is carried at the end of each arm 15, 16, a. doll figure 18 being secured to one end or side of said trapeze.
An angular winding rod 19 formed at one end with an eye 2O extends through the eye 12 in the frame 11 in such manner that it is normally secured against rotation, the rod being bent for frictional engagement with the frame but capable of rotation when it is manually raised until its horizontal intermediate portion 19fL is disposed above the frame 11. A flexible twist shaft 21, formed of rubber strands, or like material, has one end secured to the eye 2O and the other to the rod 7 just above the doll 10.
When the rod 19 is raised so that ythe part 19:l clears the frame 11 it may be manually rotated thus twisting or windingthe rubber shaft 21. The rod 19 is now released when the shaft 21 will cause it to assume its normal position, the part 19a then abutting the frame 11. The rubber shaft 21 will now start to rotate or unwind and in doing so it will rotate the rod 7 thus swinging the aerial projectile 9 and its tethe]` S. The sides of the frame being in the path of the tether the same. will wind itself first about one side of the frame, only to be unwound by the tension of the rod 7 and then about the other side from which it is again unwound. The movement of the rod 7 from side to side of the frame will cause the doll 10 to turn half way around, pause, and then complete the turn. Each trapeze 17 being formed with the tail 17 on the same side of the arm as the doll figure, in the path of movement of the rod 7 will be struck once by one complete rotary swing of the rod; that is two strokes will be delivered by the rod 7 in one completo swing around the circle, one stroke to each tail 17a. The force of the blow by the rod 7 is su'flicient to cause a trapeze to make one or two complete circle swings about its supporting arms, the movement of the trapeze dolls and of the doll 10 imbuing the toy with a variety of lifelike movements. In a mechanical toy, a base, a trame carried thereby, a trapeze carried upon each side oit said trame, a doll carried by each trapeze, a rotary screw-eye carried in said base, an angular rotary rod engaging said screw-eye, a doll tast to said rod, a winding rod carried by said frame, a resilient rotary shaft connecting said rotary rod and winding rod, an aerial projectile, and a tether connecting the same and one end of said rotary rod, said tether being adapted to wind about the sides ot said iframe alternately as its path ot movement is intercepted by them, said rod striking against the said trapezes alternately as its pat-h of movement is inter cepted by them and operating to unwind said tether trom said Atrame sides.

Il. ln a mechanical toy, a base, an inverted U-shaped trame having its ends secured to the ends of said base, the base ot said trame being formed with an eye, sleeves carried by said trame upon opposite sides thereof and spaced trom the said eye, angular support arms carried by said sleeves and extending outwardly from said frame at right angles thereto, a trapeze swing carried by each support arm, a doll carried by each trapeze swing, a tail for each trapeze swing upon the same end thereof as its doll, a rotary screw-eye carried in said base, an angular rotary rod engaging said screw-eye, a doll tast to said rod, an angular vertically adjustable winding rod carried by the said frame eye and normally in trictional locking engagement with said trame, a resilient rotary twist shali't connecting said rotary rod and winding rod and yieldingly retaining the latter in normal position, an aerial projectile, and a tether connecting the same and said rotary rod, said tether being adapted to wind about the sides ot said trame alternately as its path ot movement is intercepted thereby, said rod striking against the said trapeze swings alternately as they intercept its path of movemeut and operating to cause the unwind of said tether :trom said frame sides.
5. In a mechanical toy, a base, a trame car ried thereby, rotary swings carried by said trame, dolls tor said swings, an angular rotary rod operatively secured at one end to said base, a vertically adjustable windin g rod carried by said trame, a resilientV rotary shaft connecting said rotary rod and `winding rod, and a tethered aerial projectile carried by said angular rotary rod, the tether being adapted to wind about and unwind trom the sides ot said trame alternately as its path of movement is intercepted by said frame sides, and said angular rotary rod being adapted to alternately strike said swings in like manner.
