My invention relates to file-holders for supi porting files to admit of their convenient manipulation, and particularly to a holder of that type which is adapted to bow or flex a file. longitudinally and hold it under. tension at a suitable curvature so as to present a curved working face, as required for certain uses,
such as for instance, the removal of high spots from a broad and relatively fiat surface.
The object of the invention isto' provide an improved device of this character which embodies simple, :eflicient and positive means for flexing a file and holdingit under tension, and which may be easily and quickly operated for the insertion or removal file as'occasion'requires. I

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to accommodate files of different lengths and also to regulate the degree of curvatureof a file when the tension is applied thereto, and in which the tensioning meansand the adjusting means are separate and independent of each other, so thatwhen the holder is 'adjustedorset for a given length of file'and degree of curvature, the tensioning means may be operated without destroying the adjustment, whereby to permit files of the given length to be quickly inter-changed in the liolder andheld at'the desired curvature therein without a separate resettingof the holder at each change. The tensioning means for flexing the file. 7 comprises a toggle 8 connecting the adjacent lever, which bears on the file by means of the bearing surface 7. The other-link of the toggle is constituted by a portion of a hand lever 10, which is connected adjacent its inner end to the link 9 by means of a transverse pivot 11 forming the knuckle of the toggle and which is also connected by a transverse pivot 1:2 to the inner end of the clamping member 1, the pivot 12 being located between the pivot 11 and the outer or free end of the hand lever. The portion of the hand lever between the pivot 12 and the outer or free end of such lever serves as a handle 13 for operating the toggle and may be provided with a suitable hand-hold or grip 14;. The hand lever is preferably in the form of a channel bar, the channel opening toward the link 9 and receiving the pivoted end thereof. The side walls of the channel bear against opposite faces of the link 9 and thus strengthen the knuckle against lateral strain. At its inner end, the hand lever is extended beyond the pivot 11 to form a stop15, which coacts with the clamping member 1 to limit the movement of the hand lever.
The clamping member 1 is also preferably of channel bar formation, with its channel opening toward the stop 15 and adapted to receive the same. The sides of the clamping member 1 are extended longitudinally at its inner end to provide transversely spaced ears 16 which embrace the hand lever and are secured to it by the pivot12. This permits the lever 10 to be moved by its handle 13 to bring the toggle to an operative position with the pivot 12 on orslightly past a dead center with the pivot 11. The stop 15 is then seated in the channel of the clamping member 1 and abuts against such member to prevent the movement of the parts beyond this position. To hold the parts in operative position against accidental displacement, I provide a suitable locking device which is preferably in the form of a collar 17, slidable longitudinally 011 theclamping member 1 and adapted to be slipped around the stop 15 to prevent it from being moved away from the clamping member 1 and out of the channel thereof. Within the collar is a' spring 18 which bears against the clamping member to hold the collar frictionally. thereon against longitudinal movement,while at the same time permitting it to be easily and quickly shifted into and out of engagement with the stop 15, as 00 casionrequires. x V
The distance between the gripping devices 3 and 4- is varied to enable the holder to ac- COlHlllOdittQ files of different lengths and also to regulate the degree of curvature at which a file is held when the tension is applied This is accomplished by a suitable longitudinal adjustment of one of the clamping memhere. In the present instance, the clamping member 2 is formed in two sections having a screw-threed connection between them by means of a longitudinally disposed threaded pin 19 mounted in a threaded socket 20. The file gripping device at is carried by this pin and may be shifted longitudinally by the rotation thereof. a
It is to be noted that the adjusting means and the tensioning means, above referred to, are separate and independent of each other, so that when the holder is adjusted or set for a given length of file and degree of curvature, the tensioning means may be operated without disturbing the adjustment. This is of particular advantage in that it permits the file to be removed from the holder for sharpening or the like and to be readily replaced therein and held at the desired curvature, and also the interchange of other files of the given length in the holder without the necessity for a separate resetting or adjustment at each change.
The socket 5 and the hooked lug 6 are located on opposite sides of the axis of rotation about which the gripping member 4 turns with the threaded pin 19. The rotation of the gripping member thus permits either the socket 5 to be brought into operative position to engage the tang or shank of a file as shown in Fig. 1, or the hooked lug 6 to be brought into operative position to engage the butt endof a file as shown in Fig. 2.
In inserting a file in my improved holder, the clamping member 2:is first adjusted by means of the threaded pin 19 and socket 20 to vary the position between the gripping members 3 and 4 to suit the length of the file and to regulate the degree of curvature at which it is to be held. The file is then placed against the bearing surface 7 and introduced between the gripping members and engaged thereby. The parts are then in the position shown in Fig. 2. The clamping of the file withinthe holder is quickly efiected by moving the handle 13 in the direction of the arrow shown in. Fig. 2 to operate the toggle, whereby to apply tensionto one end of the file through the clamping member 1 and to the opposite end of the file through the elbow lever constituted by the link 9 and the clamping member 2. The file is flexed under this tension, as shown in Fig. 1, and the parts are locked in the operative position there shown by merely shifting the collar 17 around the stop 15. t is to be noted that the handle 13 may then be used for manipulating the file without any. danger of becoming accidentally displaced'and releasing the tension.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a modified form of file gripping device et which is mounted intermediate of its ends on a transverse pivot 21 and is provided on opposite sides of the pivot with a socket 5 andahooked lug 6 tooperative position to engage a file, and may I be eifectively held in such position by suitable means, such asa stop 22, carried by the clamping member 2, for limiting the rocking movement.
In another embodiment of my invention, as shown in Figs. 5 to 10 inclusive, the adjusting means for setting the holder for a particular length of file and degree of curvature, are in the form of a rack 23 and pawl 24 controlling the telescoping of the clamping member 2". In this instance, the bearing surface 7 is relatively small and of convex form and has a relatively narrow contact with {he fileto facilitate the rocking of the elbow ever.
The file-holder also includes a modified form of locking device comprising'a' transverse pin 25 mounted in corresponding longitudinal slots 26 in the sides of the clamping member 1 to slide into and out of engage ment with a recess 27 in the end of the stop .15 A spring 28 is coiled around the pin with its ends in frictional contact with the clamping member to hold the pin against accidental-movement. On the ends of the pin are heads 29 which bear against the sides of the clamping member to retain the pin in position and to provide finger-holds for the convenient shifting of the lock.
A further embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig. 11, in which the sections of the clamping member 2 are secured together by a pin and slot connection 30 which permits their relative longitudinal movement. A tooth 31 on one section engages a rack 32 on the other section to hold the sections in any desired adjustment. The pin also permits the sections of the clamping member 2 to be turned relatively to each other, when the file is disengaged from the holder, to withdraw the tooth from the rack to release the sections and permit them to be shifted to difierent longitudinally adjusted positions. In this embodiment of the invention, I also show the modified form of file gripping device referred to in connection with F g. 4. v
There is also a modified form of spring 18 for frictionally holding the collar 17 c of the lockingdevice. The spring has: its end portions seated in the channel of the clamping member 1 With'one end fastened thereto, as
indicated at 33, and the other end free. Intermediate of its ends, the spring is bowed around a transverse pin 84 and projects outwardly beyond the side edges of the channel and is adapted to yieldingly resist the sliding movement of the collar away from its operative or lockin position.
However, the v collar maybe sh fted to an inoperative position by depressing the spring and in that position is frictionally engaged by the spring and held against accidental displacement.
It will be understood that various other changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims. Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to protect by-Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A file-holder comprising clamping members adapted to engage the opposite ends of a file, and a toggle connectingsaid members and adapted to apply transverse tension to the file.
