FENCE POST.
7 Application filed October 29, ,1927. Serial No. 229,588.
' sition in a quick and easy manner, and one wherein the several horizontally disposed portions ofthe fencing materials are simultaneously secured in one movement of the locking means in operative position.
WVith the foregoing and other equally important objects in View, the invention resides in the certain new and useful combination, construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, set
. forth in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a section or panel of a fence, showing a practical installation of two of the improved posts with the locking means of the same in their operative positions,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a post and the locking means embodied therewith,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is an enlarged. fragmentarysectional, detail in perspective of a post, and one group or set of the cooperative portions of the locking means, and i Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate. corre sponding parts throughout the several views thereof, the numeral 11 indicates a fence post, which may be constructed of any suit able material, and be of any usual size shape or material, or, as shown, the same may be of metal, and of angle or T form, in which latter case, the lower end thereof. is preferably pointed, as at 11, to facilitate ground penetration, and an anchor device or member 12 may be integrally formed with the post or attached thereto at a point above the pointed end 11 to effectively retain the post in such position. 1 v
In carrying out the objects and purposes of the present invention, the front face of the post 10 will be channeled, asat 13, on its longitudinal center from a point immediately adjacent its upperend to a point in close proximity to the'upper edge of the device or member 12, substantially as is shown in Figures 2 and 3. Disposed in vertically spaced relation'at the opposite sides of the channel 18 are pairs of upwardly directed wire supporting members or lugs 14. These members or lugs 14 may be integrally formed with the post 10, or the same may be made separately therefrom, and secured in proper position as may be desired or necessary. Adapted to be snugly seated Within the channel 13 and to be removable therefrom, is a lock member or bar 15, upon the outer face of which is arranged a series of vertically spaced wire locking members or lugs 16. These members or lugs 16 cor-' respond in number to that of the pairs of wire-supporting members or lugs 14 and are directed in a downward direction for cooperation therewith when in wire locking position, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. To facilitate the withdrawal of the lockingmember or bar 15 from seated position within the channel 13, a hand grip or knob 18 may be provided in the outer face of the .upper end portion thereof for the purpose. Further to secure the locking member or bar 15 in position within the channel a removable fastening element '19 may be inserted inwardly of an aperture formed in the member-or bar 15 and in the i post 10 forits reception. It is to be noted that the locking member or bar 15 is of a vgreater thickness than the depth of the channel 13 in which it is normally seated,
'. portions of the front or outer face of the 1 member or bar so that the opposite side edges of the latter are of substantially equal thickness to the depth of the channel. Thus,
when the member or bar 15 is forced into seated engagement with the channel 13 the i 7 horizontal members 0; thereof will be en of fabricated fencing will now be stretched between the posts and in a manner that the gaged over and behind the pairs of lugs 14.
With thefabric' held in properly stretched relation the locking members or bars 15 of each post will now be forced downwardly and into full seated position within the channels 13 in a manner that the downwardly directed lugs 16 thereof will be positioned. between the upper portions of the pairsof lugs 14 and the downwardly directed portions of the same will engage over the horizontal members a of the fencing. t is to be noted that the locking member or bar 15 will be of a nature to be slightly flexible or resilient, so that the upper end of the same may be sprung into the upper end portion of the channel 13 or out of the same as the case may be for its proper manipulation to and from operative position within the channel. To effect the proper flexing of the upper end of the bar 15, to withdraw the same from seated engagement within the channel 13 the hand grip or knob 17 will be used for the purpose. The locking members or lugs16 on the outer face of the locking member or bar 15 are so positioned thereon that when the upper end of the member or bar 15 is sprung into final engagement with the upper end of the channel 13, the downward pressure of these lugs against the portions of the horizontal members a; of the fencing extending between the adjacent lugs 14 of each pair of such lugs, will effect an appreciable binding action on such portions of these horizontal members, which binding effect is augmented to an appreciable degree by the gripping of these engaged portions of the fencing members between the lugs 16 and the horizontally thickened portion of .the member or bar 15. With the locking member or bar 15 fully engaged in the channel 18 the same will be held against displacement from operative position by the fastening element 18 provided for the purpose.
This fastening element 18 is preferably in the form of a pin or the like, which is snugly but removably engaged in alined openings formed in the locking member or bar 15 and the post 11 adjacent the upper ends thereof.
Without further description, it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those face thereof, a locking member normally disposed within said seat, and cooperative locking elements carried by said post and said locking member for securing a fencing material in position thereon, said locking member being adaptedfor lateraland vertical displacement from said seat to release the locking elements carried thereby from their cooperative relation with thelockingelements carried by said post.
2. In combination, a fence post having an elongated seat formed inwardly of the front face thereof, a locking member normally disposed within said seat, and cooperative locking elements carried by said post and said locking member for securing a fencing material in position thereon, said locking member being adapted for lateral and vertical displacement from said seat at one end thereof to release the locking elements carried thereby from their cooperative relation with the locking elements carried by'said post.
3. In combination, a fence post having an elongated seat formed inwardly of the front face thereof, a resilient locking member normally disposed within said seat, and cooperative locking elements carried by said post and said locking member for securing a fencing material in position thereon, said locking member being adapted to be flexed at one end outwardly of said seat and par-- tially withdrawn vertically therefrom to release the locking elements carried thereby from their cooperative relation with the locking elements carried by said post.
4x111 combination, a fence post having an elongated seat formed inwardly of the front face thereof, a locking member normally disposed within said seat, cooperative locking elements carried by said post and said locking member for securing a fencing material in position thereon, said locking member being adapted for lateral and vertical displacement from said seat to release the locking elements carried thereby from their cooperative relation withthe locking elements carried by said post, and a hand grip carried by said locking member toward one end thereof for facilitating the operation of the same. V
5. In combination, a fence post having an elongated seat formed inwardly of the front face thereof, a locking member normally disposed within said seat, cooperative locking elements carried by said post and said locking member for securing a fencing material in position thereon, said locking mem ber being adapted for lateral and vertical displacement from said seat to release the locking elements carried thereby from their normally cooperative relation with the looking elements carried by said post, a hand tion of the same, and means r securing said locking member against accidental displacement from operative position within said seat.
