Description

May 21, 1929- J HAVEL 1,714,309
RIBBON EDGED BRAID Filed June 21, 1928 WA fin INVENTOR Patented May 21, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HAVEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AND ABE-AM BRANDT.
Application filed June 21,
My invention relates to braids edged .with ribbon-like material to be user. in hat making, for trimming and the like, and it is my object to produce a braid which Wlll, when made up into a hat be firm and yet have the appearance of being made of r bbonlike material and yet not be so stiff that it cannot be used as a trimming.
The drawing is a greatly enlarged View of the braid, for clearness of. illustration. Fig. 1 is a plan view of a hat braid having ribbon-like material on one edge; and Fig.
2 is a diagrammatic View of the braid with ribbon-like material along both edges.
The braid comprises a plurality of fiat tapes 1, 2 and 3, which are preferably loosely woven of nitro-cellulose threads, although any relatively stiif material which yields a tape of strength and lightness, may be employed. The tapes are braided together in the ordinary manner into a flat braid. As the tapes are braided together in the braiding machine a ribbon-like material A such as ribbon, braid, a narrow strip of nitrocellulose material, or the like, is wound round and round the outside turns of the tape as illustrated. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the ribbon-like material extends along one edge. If desired a second piece of ribbon-like material 5 may be wound around the outside turns on the other edge as shown in Fig. 2.
ASSIGNOR TO JOS. BRANDT & 1330., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A COPAR'IIFTERSI-Ifif? CUIYIEOSED OF JOSEPH BRANDT, LOUIS BRANDT,
RIBBOI'l-EDGED BRAID. m I
of twisted ribbon-like material and still be firm enough to hold its shape, which would not be the case if ribbon like material alone were employed.
In the double edged form of Fig. 2 the tape may be used as a dress trimming or ornament as it is flexible enough to bebentand follow curves and turns.
I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a braid comprising a plurality of flat tapes of relatively stiff material braided togetherinto a flat braid and a piece of ribbon-like material wound round and round the out side turns at one edge thereof.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a braid comprising a plurality of flat tapes of relatively stiff material braided together into a flat braid and a pair of pieces of ribbon-like material each wound round 'and round the outside turns at opposite edges thereof.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOSEPH HAVEL.
