Be it known that I, JACQUES MEY R, of

the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Horse'Gollar, of which the following is a specification:

. In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, partly in section, of my improved horse-collar, shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a front View of the collar, as opened, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail vertical and horizontal sections, respectively, on the lines a; 00 and y y, Fig. 1.

.My invention'relates to an improved horsecollar, which is readily applied and taken off the horses neck, combining collar and hames, so that separate hames may be dispensed with.

The invention consists of a collar with metallic stiffening plates or hames, which are hinged at the top and locked. atthe side by means of a hinged piece of the hame entering a. socket and spring-lock of the other collar section. The terrets and trace-fasteners are connected in rigid but detachable manner to the stiffening-hames.

In the drawing, A represents a leather collar, that is stuffed with any suitable material to form a cushion for the metallic plates or hames B that stiffen the collar, and are hinged together at the top part of the collar, where they issue from the cushioning parts of the same. .The metallic plates or hames B are provided with small holes, by which the connection of the leather-coveringparts of the collar and the hameplates are made. One of the hinged collar sections is made longer than the other, so as to extend across the lower part of the neck and form a joint with the shorter section at the side of the neck. The end of the shorter collar section is provided with a locking mechanism, 0, which engages the extended tongue end a of the hame section when introduced into the socket end of' the shorter hame. The spring-catch b is released the outside of the collar. In place of the springcatch and button any other suitable locking mechanism of the tongue may be used. For the purpose of imparting to the tongue end a the required degree of flexibility which is required for the introduction of the tongue to the socket and lock of the shorter hame, the longer hame section is made with a pivoted lower or bottom part, D, that is connected by a pivot to the lower end of the hame B. The surrounding cushion does not allow the free swinging of the pivoted hame D, but stiffens it sufficiently to admit merely its giving to such an extent that the entering and withdrawing from thesocket of'the shorter hame may be readily accomplished. The opening of the collar at the side and the swinging on the top hinge allow the easy application of the collar to the necks of the horses. The terrets E are screwed into socketholes of the metallic hames, and are readily exchanged, as required. The trace-fasteners F are applied rigidly to raised projections of square shape by means of fastening socketnuts 0. Any other suitable trace-fastening device may be attached by unscrewing the socket-nuts. The metallic hames are made somewhat wider and stronger at the points where the terrets and trace fasteners are attached. The hames take up less room, and admit the perfect cushioning of and littingto the neck, producing a collar of elegant shape and proporl ions. The convenience of apply ing the collar without straps, buckles, or otherparts, which are visible from the outside forms a feature of its superiority over the common collars, while the ready opening and closing at the side of the neck allows the putting on of the collar without stooping or bending down.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A horse-collar, stilfened by hinged metallic hames, and made to be closed and opened at the side of the neck, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
