Description

May 21, 1929. w OWEN 1,713,765
CIGARETTE PACKAGE Filed June 11, 1927 K INVENTOR. MAL/AND. OWE v.
Patented May 21, UNITED STATES I v 1,713,765 PATENT OFF-ICE.
WILLIAM DANIEL OIITEN, OI POMONA, CALIFORNIA.
CIGARETTE PACKAGE Application filed June 11, 1927 Serial No. 198,119.
This invention pertains to pa er packages for holding cigarettes, and an 0 ject thereof is to provide a cigarette package with a convenient means for moving the cigarettes contained therein toward the withdrawal opening as the same are removed.
It is the practice of cigarette manufacturers to market their products in paper packages lined with waxed paper and tin foil to reserve their normal freshness. The users in order to remove the cigarettes therefrom tear a small portion of the ackagc at one of its corners, this allowing t e user to conveniently remove the ci arettes, but as the packages become crushe out of their original shape due to the removal of a portion of the cigarettes it has proved difiicult to gain access to the cigarettes farthest removed from the withdrawal opening to remove the same without destroying the package or injuring the cigarettes. By means of the device herein described, the cigarettes may be moved from time to time toward the withdrawal opening as the ones adjacent the opening are removed, without destroying the package or injuring the cigarettes. In an embodiment of the invention, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette package equipped with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section'of the package taken on-line 22 of Fig. 1 with a position of the cigarette removed.
Fig. 3 is a partial vert-ical'section through t e packa e taken on line 22 of Fig. 2
s owing t e member for moving the cigarettes toward the withdrawal 0 ening.
Fi 4 is a detail elevation o the package showing the ci arette withdrawal opening.
Fig. 5 is a email view of one of the side walls of the package showing the withdrawal opening a cigarette pull. Fi 6 is an enlarged showlng the reinforcement adjacent the cigarettepull opening. v
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view 'of the upper end of the package showing a modified form of construction.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates a cigarette package of usual orm for holding twenty cigarettes. This package is constructed from a pliable paper havin moisture and air proof inner inings 6, 7, eing formed in the usual man-v ner and consisting of front, rear, side and 7 end walls 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 respectively,
The cigarettes 15 are arranged in t e pack- I age in transverse parallel rows of three cigarettes each. In order to conveniently extract cigarettes from the package the upper right hand corner of the package is cut awa as at 16 to expose the row of cigarettes a jacent the side wall 10, and forms a withdrawal opening. In order to movethe cigarettes forwardly to withdrawal opening as the cigarettes adjacent the opening are removed from the package a strip of flexible paper 17 is provided, one end being secured to the interior surface of the front wall 8 of the package as at 18 in any suitable manner, as by gluing, the strip being disposed midway the upper and lower ends of the package and' extending edge of the strip is provided with aplurality of notches or teeth 21 that engage the lower end of the opening or slit 19 to prevent accidental movement of the strip after an operation, and to hold the remainin cigarettes in position.
In order to prevent an accidental enlargement of the opening 19 the walls above the opening are rovided with a reinforcement strip 22 of fa ric or similar material.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modified form, the upper right hand corner being scored or weakened as at 25 in order that a withdrawal opening may be formed in the package similar to the opening 16 in form first described. By completely sealing the package the con- .7 tents may be kept in a fresh condition, the detail cross section scored lines ermitting the user to quickly open the pac age.
The operation of the devic'from-the above will be clearly apparent, assoon as the first three cigarettes are removed from the package, the user then grasps the tab 20 and pulls the strip outwardly to bring the remaining cigarettes forwardly so as to dispose the next row of cigarettes at the withdrawal opening, at the same time the strip is shifted downwardly so as to bring one of the teeth or notches on its lower edge into engagement with the wall of the package at the end of the slit 19, see Fig. 3. i
What I claim is: A cigarette container comprising a package formed. of a flexible material having a cigarette withdrawal opening, a flexible pull strip disposed within said package, one end of said strip being fast to the inner face of one of the container walls, the strip encircling the cigarettes within the package and its free end passing through an opening in one of the Walls of said container, whereby the cigarettes may be moved towards the withdrawal opening as some of the same are removed, and means formed on said pull strip for holding the same against movement after an operation.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM DANIEL OWEN.
