ONTAINEB AND GLOSURE THBEFOR.
AApplication med July 20,
. My invention relates to containers and closures for the'same andrefers particularly tocontainers and container `closures so related to each other inA construction as to 'allow of their easy and eiective co-operationto produce a closed container.
One of" the objects.` of my invention is a container closure capable of adjustment upona container and of closing the same in an 1o 'eifective manner by thesimple process of passing', or forcing, a closed ring thereon.
Among the attributes desirable in a vclosure of this character may be mentioned the following It should be economicv in pro'- duction and simple in construction, it should not puncture or destroy the container walls,
it should be capable of adjustment without the employment of tools, it should not crush or destroy the shapeof the container walls zo through compression or otherwise, it should be vree from accidental displacement, it should produce a firm and eiiective closure of the container, it should be capable of ready removal without injuring the container. Y
The device of my invention possesses all of the above-mentioned, and other, valuable attributes as will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawings.-
In he accompanying drawings illustrat. ing modified forms `oatthe device of my invention similar partsare designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a side view closed by one :form of my closure.
Figure 2 is an enlarged :fragmentary view of a portion of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section through the line 3-3 4o ,of F1gure2. V
Figure 4 is a section through the line 4r-4; of Figure 2. Figure 5 is a fragmentary-vertical crossvsection of a modified form ofmy device.
The particular form of the device of my invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 3 4and 4 comprises ian annular container 10 of cardboard, liber, wood orother suitable material oi?V a container Figure 6 is a fragmentary front view of 192s. serial Nb; 294,238. i
an annular recess, or groove, 11
The annular iiange member -15 has a plurality of depending tongues 16, 16, each ofi which is cut to form the outwardly extended upper stop 17 andan inwardly extended locking memberf18, the lwer portion of each tongue being extended outwardly'forming a lower stop 19.
The locking member 18 is formed by cutting three sides of a'central portion of a tongue 16 and bending vthe thus cut portion inwardly, each locking member 18 being positioned to enter the groove 11 whenthe cover is in proper position upon the container 10.
. `In order to employ the device, the cover iiange 15, or the tongues 16, 16 are sprung outwardly, if necessary inorder to allow the cover to be placed upon the container as shown," and the binding ring 20 is then forced downwardly over the cover, forcing the locking` members 18, 18 into the groove 11 of the container 10, the stops17 and 19 preventing the accidental displacement of the ring 20. The resiliency of the metal cover will spring the upper sto member into outwa'rdposltion` after the ring 20 "has passed thereover:
I prefer ^to have the groove 11 in practi-A cally thel plane of the base 12, in order to assist vin-supportinglthe inward pressure of the cover at this pomt.
` In the modification of the cover of my\in stop 21 is formedby pressing a portion of a/tong'ue 1 6 outwardly instead of forming it by cutting as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4.
In the modification of the, cove of my invention illustrated in Figures 6, 7 and 8, each tongue has an upper stop' 22 formed by vention illustrated in Figure `5, each yupper pressing a portion of the tongue outwardly, Y
- a lower stop 19 formed by bending the end of the .tongue outwardly and two locking members 23, 23, formed by cutting the sides` of the tongue and bending the cut portions inwardly. v
It will thus be seen that the device of my invention presents a container and a cover,
or closure, therefore, 'the locked closing of' the container being accomplished by placing the cover upon the containerandiforcing a .closed binding ring thereover, the
binding ring being protected from acciden- -tal displacement. i Y
- Itv will be noted that the cover 'can be placed inl any position uupon the container,
' as the continuous groove 1l will receive the locking members at any point thereof and it will, be noted further that `noincisions are made in the side walls of the container by the cover in order to retain-it in position, thu's maintaining the fulloriginal strength of the container wall., Y A l v It will be further noted that in the forms illustrated the inward pressure of the binding ring 1s in line with the base of the cover,
i Lthus preventing the inward crushing of the containerwhenl it is composed offiber or other crushable material. l
I do not limit' myself to the particular size, shape,`number, arrangement or material of parts asshown and described as these are given simply as a means for clearly describing the device' of-my invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a' container having a-recess in the outer face of the side Awall thereof, a closure comprising a base, a U-shaped peripheral liangecarried by said base capable of placement in abutment with the upper portion of a containenwall, retaining said base in the plane `of saidrecess, va .plurality of depending tongues vcarried by said ange, an extended locking member', carried by each tongue 'capable of being the upper portion of a container wall, re-l taining said base in the plane of said recess', a plurality of depending tongues carried by said flange, an extended locking member integral with each tongue capable of being placed within said container recess, a. closed ring capable of being forced downwardly over saidA tongues forcing said locking means into said container. recess and means preventing the accidental displacement of said ring.
3. In combination with a .container-having a recess in the outer face of the side wall thereof, a closurecomprising a base, a
U-shaped peripheral flange carried by said base capable of placement in abutment with the upper portion of a container wall, re-
taining said b se in the plane of said recess, a. plurality of epending tongues carried by saidange, an. extended locking member integalwith each tonguev capable of being placed within said container recess, a closed ring capable of being forced downwardly over said tongues forcing said locking means into said container/)recess and means -integral with each tongue preventing the accidental displacement of said ring. y
4c. In combination with acoltainer having a recess in the outer face of the side wall thereof, a closure comprising-a base, a
.U-shaped peripheral flange carried by said base capable of abutment upon the upper portion of a container, retaining said base in the plane of said recess, a plurality of depending tongues carried by said flange, an inwardly extended locking member formed by a cut-out portion of each 'tongue capable of placement within said container recess, a
closed ring capable of being forced downwardly over said tongues forcing said lockingmember into said recess and outwardly extended means vformed by cut-out portions y of each tongue preventing [the accidental displacement of said ring. Y
