UNITED STATES ERNEST W. FREEMAN, OE B ELLEVILLE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO.CONTINENTAL CAN COMPANY, INC., NEWYOBK, N. Y., A COBPORA-- TION OF NEW YORK.
CONTAINER.
Application filed August 24,1927. Serial No. 215,033.
My invention relates to improvements in containers of the slip cover variety which are provided with external beads or projec-' tions between which an implement, such as 6 a coin, knife or the like, may be inserted for prying the cover loose.
An object of my invention is to provide the body member-and the cover member of the container with opposing outwardly pro- 10 jecting beads or projections, the head on one of the members, such as the body, having one or more portions substantially on the sameplane through the body and an intermediate portion oliset from said plane to admlt an implement between opposing beads, and on opposite sides of said intermediate portion the corresponding bead is inclined gradually toward the first named portions so that the space between the opposing beads gradually decreases from the intermediate portion of the first named bead, whereby M001 inserted in the wider space between the beads may be body, and may be pushed or rolled between the beads so as gradually to advance through the decreasing space between the beads to serve in a wedge-like manner to loosen the cover on the body, whereby the cover may be readily removed.
3o My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claim.
. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherem V N Fig. '1 is a side viewof a container or box embodying my invention;
Fig.- 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1'; 40 lliig. 3 is a perspective viewof the body, Fig. 4 is aside view illustratin the position of 'a coin during the prying o the cover loose from the body of the container.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts-in the several views. My: improved container comprises a body member 1 and a cover member 2, which may be of any well known construction, such as 0' commonly called tin cans, wherein the body and the cover may, if 'd'esired, be stamped each from a single piece of metal. The body 1 is provided with an external bead 3 which 1 may be formed by forcing a portion of the '56 metal of the side wall of the body outwardrotated to pry the cover from the- When the cover is upon the body the bead like is in the wider-portion of a recess 3 the tool may be rolled or pushed around the body beads are known, between which ly in the form of a projection and preferably squeezing the same together, as illusthe body, said portions thereby bein level,
there being preferably three of suc portlon's located around the body in equal spaced relation, and at an intermediate p'oint' 3 between each two portions 3 the bead 3 is off-- set from said plane a suitable distance. The upper surface of the bead 3 on opposite sides of a portion 3 inclines toward the adjacent higher portion 3f in a gradually slanting direction. The skirt 2 of the cover is provided at its edge with an outwardly extending bead or projection 2 which is shown on the same plane throughout at the edge of theskirt, which bead may be formed by rolling the edge of the skirt.
2} is adapted to rest against the higher portions 3 of the bead 3 of the .body, as illus- 'trated in 1,to properly position the cover upon the body and whereby recesses at 3 are provided between the heads 3 and 2" in which an implement, such as a coin 4, or other suitable tool, may be inserted for prying off the cover. When the coin or the coin may be rotated or twisted so as tobear against the opposing beads to pry the cover loose. However, (particularly should the cover adhere to the body tightly),the coin or between the beads, whereby by reason of the gradual inclination-of the bead 3 from its low point 3' to a high point 3*, as viewed in Fig. 1, the coin or tool will be gradually forced in a wedge-likemanner betweemthe' two beads to' cause initial release of the cover from the body, and at any convenient point Y of the coin along the container the coin may be turned or twisted for finally prying oflt' the cover. v g I am aware that containers havi'n spaced dieads a coin" or tool'may be placed for prying the I cover-from a container body, but in such containers the construction is such that turning 11b 7 or twisting only of the coin or tool is provided for so that when the cover adheres to the container body very tightly it is uite diflicult to cause release of the cover mm the body. In accordance with my invention the coin or tool may be rolled or pushed into the gradually decreasing s ace between the two beads on either side '0 the wider recess 3 so that the wedging action of the coin or .1". tool between the beads performs the novel I claim is effect of starting the release of the cover from the body. 7
Having now described my invention what A metal container comprising a body member provided with an external projecting bead formed in the side wall thereof at a distance beneath the upper edge of the container, a cover member for said body provided with a projecting bead at its extreme lower edge lying in a plane parallel with the plane' of the top portion. of the cover member whereby when said covert member is placed 4m said body member thebeaded edge ortion of the cover member will have a uniorm friction grip. upon the portion of the body member above its head throughout the entire circumference thereof for holding the I, cover on the body member, said bead on the placed between the inclined portion of the ead on the body member and the bead at the lower edge of the cover may be used for wedging or. prying the cover member loose from the body member.
