TABLE PAD.
Application filed March i4, 192'?.
My invention relates to table covers and the like, being more particularly concerned with the provision of a table `pad consisting of a plurality of quick detachable parts,
5 which may loe assembled to form pads ot various sizes and shapes.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a table pad of the class d oscrihed, having a plu ality oli separable pads lo of various shapes and sizes which are joined together loy a plurality oil" quick detachable connectors, disposed and protected in such manner as to forni a pad of substantially smooth and even thickness.
Another object olf my invention is the provision of a novel quick detachable connector for the purpose set forth, consisting oit' a pair of thin flat complementary menihers, which are simple in structure and easy 20 to manutacture, which are adapted to hold the component parts of the pad iirmly ltogcther to prevent relative sliding, and which accomplish this result without :termin g thick spots or projections on the table pad.
Other objects and advantages of my 1n vention will appear more lully from the liollowingl description, and from the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a plan view oi' the lneierred emhodinient of my table pads; Y
Figure 2 is a plan View ol.E a modilied form :for round tables.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a portion ol a table pad showing a modilied 'form of my invention. i
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of a poru tion ol' my table pad showing the connectors, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is anenlarged detail view ot the connectors with the covering for the connectors removed.`
' Referring to Figure l, l() indicates a section oi the tali-le pad, preferably rectangular in form, which is adapted to cover a suhstantially rectangular portion of a table top, and il' desired the size of this section may he made such that two of such sections are required to cover the tahle top in its folded position. lfilhen it is desired 'to add leaves Serial No. 175,157.
to the tahle top, a plurality of smaller sections ll and l2 may he provided for the pur pose oi. adding to the sections l() to cover the central portion olf the table and it will be observed that my table pad is thus made adjustable to cover tahles o'll any length. Refering to Figure 2, I have here shown a modilied form of table pad, :for circular table tops, comprising two sel'nicircular sections ll removahly held together. The sections l() may also he provided with counectors l' and .1,7 at the outer edge il? de sired and the end sections lli-5 added thereto to make a pad capable olf covering a tahle with hinged end pieces. It will he under stood that though the end sections 13 are shown substantially semicircular in torni, that the shape of these sections may he varicd'to correspond to the shape ot the end pieces oi the tahle, whether it he rectangular', rectangular with roiiuuled corners, or other irregular shapes.
In order to assemble the sections 10, ll and 12, shown in Figure l, together with counterparts of these sections to cover the other end oft the table, I provide a plurality oft small flat connectors, which are allixed to the respective tahle pad sections to provide a quick detachable connection capable of holding these sections together. y
The connectors employed lor this purpose consist of a female coin'iector and a male connector, adapted to he received in the same, and in order that the separate table pad sections may he interclumgeahle the male and female connectors are preferably disposed as shown in Figures l, 2 and 3 with male and female connectors inversely mounted upon the same ends ol the table pad sections.
Thus, it will he observed that on the end pad section 13, the upper connector lll is z` .male connector adapted to he received in the female connector l5, while on the lower portion ot the section 13 there is mounted a female connector 16 adapted to connect with the male connector 17 upon the pad section 10. It will thus he ohserved that it two identical end sections 13 are enr CFI ployed together, that the female connector 16 of one sect-ion will be adapted to connect with the male connector 14 of the other section, and that both connectors will be so located as to fit-one another. In a similar manner the connectors on the other end of the pad section 10 are inversely located, the upper connector 18 being a male connector, while the lower connector 19 is a female connector, and it will be observed that either Aend Vof the pad section 10 will connect with the end section 13 when the connectors are thus arranged. The connectors upon the middle sections 11 and 12 are likewise inversely arranged for the same purpose, the connectors 20, 21, 22 and 23 being male connectors, while the connectors 24, 25, 2G and 27 are female connectors. The balance of the table padA (not'shown) which may be similar to that shown in Figure 3 is likef Wise equipped with connectors.
Referring to Figure 4, 28 indicates the body portion of my table pad, which may consist of a layer of cotton or wool felt cut to the conformations shown in Figure 3, and covered upon one side by a layer 29 of fabric which is preferably a closely woven flannel, and upon the other side by ai layer of closely woven fabric 30 which is covered with rubber on its exterior surface, as at 31. In order thatthe table pad may serve a variety of purposes, the flannel covering 29 is prefer- -ably of a. dark green color, adapted to be restful to the eyes, and my table pad is therefore adapted to be used in its reversed position as shown in 'Figure 2 for furnishing a. card pla ingsurface. The rubber surface 31 is pre 'erably pure white in color, in order to furnish ka White background for table cloths or other coverings employed upon the table pad.V
In Order to secure the bodies-of `the pad sections and their respective coverings firmly together, and'to provide a pad of maximum flexibility, along diagonal lines, I prefer to fastenthese parts together with a plurality of regularly spaced lines of diagonal stitching, the lines of stitching being alternately oblique 1n opposite directions, extending across the pad as shown in Figure A1. As the needles employed in forming these lines of stitching would ordinarily produce a great number of apertures in the rubberized fabric 31, thereby rendering its waterproofing qualities i effective, I prefer Vto assemble the flannel covering 29, the. body 28, and upper fabric El() first by stitching these parts along the lines shown in Figure 1, after which the surface 31 of the fabric 30 may be covered with rubber as shown.
The rubber coating 31 may consist of lthin sheet of white rubber which is'aflixed vto the fabric 30 by a layer of ordinary rubber cement. The whole pad may then be passed through heated pressure rolls, firmly press;- ing and vulcanizing the rubber and fabric together.
The rubber coating b1, therefore, not only covers and renders impervious the fabric 30, but it completely covers the apertures formed by the lines of stitching 32, the only external evidence of these lines of stitching upon the rubber layer being the presence of a plurality of lines of inward creases corresponding to the location of the lines of stitching 32. Itl will thus be observed that the rubber covered fabric 31 forms an upper covering for the table pad, which is impervious to moisture, and which is adapted to protect both the interior of the pad and the table top upon which it lies.
After the main portion of the pad sections have been Constructed as described, the edges of the same are bound together by z, binding tape 33, preferably a narrow strip of closely woven white 'fabric having its woef and warp diagonal to its length, and likewise covered with an exterior layer ol white rubber. The tape is folded about the edge of the pad, both edges o l the tape being turned under also, and stitched to the pad by ra single line of stitching` il passing through the upper edge (F 2) of the. binding tape 33, the flannel fabric 2i), [he felt body 28, the 'fabricv 8() and rubber 31, and the lower edge of the binding tape Bil. The binding tape 33 extends coanipulelely about the periphery of ach pad section, the ends of the tape being slightly overlapped and thus all raw edges of fabri t are protected and covered to form a finished pad. lhe
lbiased binding tape greatly adds io the.
flexibility of the edge of the pad due lo the. direction of its woof and warp, and at the same time adequately protects these edges against unraveling. At the same time all parts of the white side of the pad may be washed with a wet rag as it is completely covered with rubber.
I shall now describe in detail the. connector which is preferably employed with my table pad sectionf-: to hold these parts together without forming any substantially thick spots or projections upon the fable pad itself.
Referring to Figure 5, 35 and cate two enlarged portions of any pad scetion which have been ln'ought into abutting relation and which are provided with the female connector 37 and the male connector 38. The female. connector 3T comprises a thin fiat piece ol metal plate, which may be of steel or other resilient metal, but which I prefer to construrfzt of ordinary tin, which 36 indiloo pos: sses suflicient resilience for the purpose desired.
vThe female connector 37 is formed ol" a substantially rectangular piece of mclal having an (nil'wardly projecting tab Si) for lill) tnt/1eme the purpose ot fixing the connector upon the pad. The ends ot this rectangular major portion may be bent under at points along` theA outline ot the tab Slt) so that the 'edges t0 and il ot the metal plato` are `broriglnt into abutting' relation to form an open tube ol" substantially rectangulail cross section which is adapted to receive the end l2 oi the male Connector 38. In order to tacilitate the insertion oit' the male eounector, the adjacent ends 413 and 4tloii the folded portions ot the itemale connector are prete"ably slightly extended, as shown at 45, iu Fig-ure 4l, thereby iforn'linp,l a slmulder upon 'which the male connector may be easily located tor insertion into the :female eonneetor 37. The vfemale eonneetor 2:37 may be ,tirmly lixed to the pad section by means oil a tubular rivet 4K6 having a ''lat round head 41:7', and it the pad section is 'firmly clamped between the head t7 and the eoinuwtor Si" by the rivet 4G, these parts may be lined together' Without substantially inereasiuzey the thielmess oli the pad at this point.
The male connector 315i; comprisesI a 'lint piece of metal similar to that used in the 'l'emale connector 37, haviingr a similar tab St) with an aperture flS, which is adapted to receive a similar rivet 4l@ to aiiix the oonneetor to the pad seetion. The male connector 23S is jnovided with an outwardly ei;- teuding tongue 49 slightly narrower than the tab 3S), thereby formingI the shoulders 5() Which are adapted to limit the extent oi. the insertion of the tongue 4i) into the connector 37. The size of the tube in lthe iiemale connector 37 may be made such 'that the lolds 4-0 and. il slightly clam p the tongue a9, but .lf pre'iier to liorm the apen ture in the 'female connector slightly larger than the tongue 41), providing the tongue Ll?) with a I )lurality ol. transverse bends or erimps as at 5l and 52, forming ridges or points of f :ontaot upon the tongue 49, whioh are adapted to cooperate with the interior o'l the conneotor 37 to frietionally hold these parts together. The tli'nnsverse erimps 5l and 52 give the male connector' inni-eased resilienoe and permit a firm oonneetion be` tween these parts, with a eousidi-irable va riation in the size et the aperture in the lemale connector. The male connector 38 is likewise ailixed to the table pad sections atter the manner described tor the temale connector, and this male conneetor presents even less possibility oi points ot increased thickness or protrusion upon the pad.
As the i'lanuel covering` 29, upon which .sido the connectors are disposal, generally in contact with the table, the major portions of the connectors 37 and 355, together with their rivets, are Covered by small tabs ol' tlannel 53 oi sulistantially the same shape as that portion of the outline of the connectors Whieh lies upon the pad,
but f'slightly la'ii'grer than. the eoiineetors, so
that the tabs may be tired upon the ronnectors by a line ot stitehin,eY 5lpassing; around the exterior edge oli the eouneelors :nid extending through the pad exertion.
lllhile the stitching 5ft produces a line ot perlorations in the rubber layer these periferations are so near the edggge that their proaence is immaterial, but if desired, the connectors and tabs might be aiiixed betere the rubber layer is added, thereby a voiding all perforations. The rivets Ll-(S are preterably tinned or .niekeled to present a noncorrodingi' surface, and the heads /lf may elamp the pad slightly so that they are disposed `in, a slight depression in suoli maimer that the heads do .not aetually come in eontact with the table when that side oit the pad is against the table top.
It will thus be observed that l have invented a table pad coneisting` of a plurality oit separable sections whieh are 'joined together by an extremely tint and simple :torni oit connector, and which table pad is adapted both to be used as a protiwtive rovering;l uiuierneath the 'usual table eloth or as :i eard playing surface 'lier tables oli all types. lily means-i oit the vform oit diagonal stitching shown, the :Flexibility oit my pad :is greatly increased, being adapted to extend over the :dires ot the table and to readily told down on eaeh side of a eorner along;` the lines ot i'lexure :termed by the diagonal stitching.
llilhile l have shown and described the preitca'red embodiment ol my invention, many minliiieations may be made without departing trom the spirit oit the invention, and .l do not Wish to be .limited to the pre oise details ot construction set forth, `but desire to avail myself ot all changes within the seope oil the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l clain'i as new and desire to seoure by .lietters Patent oit the United States, is:
l. In a table pad, the combination et a pluality ot pad sections olf various sizes and shapes aiflapted to be eombined to Cover an extensible table top, with a plurality of eonneetors eomprisingji` a teinale member confesisting of a Ltlat pieee of metal of substantially rectangulaishape, with opposite sides bent into abutting relation to lorm a tubelike member, and a tlat male member co1nprising a llat metal plate adapted to tit ivi thin sa' l tube-lil-:e member, and means for attaching said (,:onneetors to said pad See-- tions, said ooiineotors being` depressed in the surface of said sections to prevent Contact oli' theconneetors with the table.
