IMPROVEMENT IN SPlTTOON-MATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17] ,29| dated'December 21, 1875; application led October 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOHN LEE, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improved Spittoon-Mat and Oarpet-Protector; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enablel any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement Without further invention or experiment. My invention relates to an improved mat for spittoons, which is so constructed that it will catch and retainany spittle which misses the spittoon, and prevent it from running upon the carpet or floor.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation.

A represents a mat, which can be madein any desired shape, although I prefer to make them circular, as shown. This mat I can make of metal, papier maeh, or other material. The mat I make larger than the spittoon, so that when the spittoon is standing in its center a wide margin or rim Will extend outward entirely around it. This margin or rim I stamp, Y

press, or otherwise form into cells, cavities,

or depressions d el, so that any spittle which misses the spittoon Will be caught in the marginal cavities, and be prevented from running off upon the carpet or oor. The cavities b b may be variously constructed, either as concentric grooves or radial channels or cavities; 4but in any case they will serve the same purpose. The margin or rim of the mat I ornament in any desired manner, so that it Will correspond with the carpet or floor upon which it is placed, thus not only providing a useful,

lbut an` ornamental article as Well. The cells or cavities Will catch the misdirect'ed spittle, and the mat can be removed and cleansed when desired, thus saving the carpet from damage. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A spittoon-mat consisting ot' a central portion, A, surrounded by a margin or rim, provided With cells, cavities, or depressions b b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
