UNITED STATES JACOB R. SENSIBR, 011'" CHICAGO, ELLNOIS.

Application lerl .April 1.6, 1925. Serial No. 23,736.
'.lfhis invention relates to pump connections and '111e like. 1
The primary object et this invention is to provide a ready means tor connectingl and 11iseonuectingl the suction pipe 011 sand barges and the like so that the suction pipe may be readily disconnected at `the side ol' the boat and placed upon the deelt, thereby leavingv the side ot the vessel smooth and without a pipe extending permanently trom the side ol' the vessel as has sometimes been done.
Another object is to provide a ready seal between 'the suction pipe and the vessel which easy to make and liept in repair.
l`hese and other objects are accomplished by the invention which `is fully described in the following` specification and `shown in the aceompanyine drawings, in which:
Figure l1 is a partial side elevation olf the 'torward end ol a boat embodying the i11- ven tion g flge'. 2 is :111 enlarged partial section 011 the 1111112-2 ot l;
l1 ig. 3 is 11 similar section 011 the line lol" Fig. l;
YFigi'. 41's a rear elevation looking outwardly oli the crane 'tor raising and lowering` the suction pipe and tor swinging it inwardly toward the deck; and
lfig. 5 a top plan View oit the same.
'lhe embodiment illustrated comprises a boat having a hull l() within which is mounted upon a suitable bar ll a centrifugal pump l2. .lhe intake to this pump consists of an intake pipe lil which connects through a `@gate 7al1/e 111. with an opening l5 through the, side ot the hull below the water line as is shown in 1T ig. l. i 1
J1 track 1G havi1'1gitlauged edges as is shown in 111g. 3, lying on each side of the openingf 15111111 extends upwardly and forwardly from this opening,l to a convenient point on the deck above the hull l0. A plate 17 having grooved edges slides within the tracl; 16 as is shown in Fig. 3, and carries a pulley 18 over which runs a lifting rope 19 tor raising and lowering the plate 17 as will laterbe described.
A crane 20 is mounted upon the forward deck and adapted to swing above a vertical pivot 9.1. rl`his crane carries a member 22 which is pivotally mounted upon a vertical pivot pin 23 so as to permit the member 22 to move into alignment with the hull 10 of the vessel as the crane is moved outwardly to the position as shown in Figs. 41- and 5. Sections y tion.
the plate l? as shown in ltig. 3, andis :rew
tained therein by means oil? two halt rings :2H which are held by moans oit' studs 2S), thereby as thc sucpermitting the elbow 9.7 to swing tion pipe is being raised and lowered. 'lwo or more sections ot suction p1pes 31) and 3l are tlcxibly connected to the elbow by means ot rubber tubing' 32 and 33, the lower section otv the suction pipe carrying a suitable suction nozzle 11-, rl`he suction pipe is iarried by means oit slings and lo which are swung'` :trom ropes 3"? and 3&1, running over suitable blocks on the davits 21S) and 410 so that as the elbow 27 is raised and lowered by means'o'f the rope l). the raised and lowered by means of the ropes 37 and 38 running' over the blocks on the davits and 1 From the foregoing;- iti will be understood that with the pump going and the part-5` in the position as show u in .ll l, as will be the case during' pumping7 'to disconnect the suction line and bringi it over the side oit the vessel, the operator lirst closes the valve lsl then simultaneously lifts the suction line by means of the ropes 19, 37 and Sill, thereby raising the suction line until the pipes 30 and 3l lie suthciently horizontal and the plate lr' drawn completely clear of the track 16 and into the track 16m'. The member 22 can then be swung back over the deck of the vessel, the rope 19 being held locked in this raised posi- At the same time the davits 39 and 41() permit the suction pipe to be raised so as to clear the top of the hull so that this suction pipe can be laid full length upon the deck. Thus it will be seen that a very convenient means is provided Yfor completely disconnecting the suction line from the side of the vessel so that there is no longer any danger of the vessel striking an object which will break and injure the suction line.
At the same time the entire suction line, lying as -it does below the water line7 forms a convenient water seal. the suction ot' the pump in operation tending to draw all of section line is simultaneously i the parts toward the hull, thereby greatly diminishing the amount of water which may leak in around the plate 17.
1 The davits 39 and 40 have Substantially the same radius as the crane Q0 so that, by properly placing the ropes 37 and 38 upon the Suction pipe, the crane Vand davite will Swing together to move the suction pipe on or ott' the boat.
While I'have shown and described but a single embodiment et 4this invention, it is to `be understood. that it is capable of many modifications.. Changes therefore in the construetien and arrangement may be made winch do notvdepart from the spirit and scope ot the invention af; disclosed in the appended claims.
IV cla-im:
