UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KELLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CALENDARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,227, dated December 21, 1875; application filed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN KELLER, of the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Calendars, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to the time-calendars printed on cards for showing the'months and days of the month, and of the week.
My invention consists of the compound device of the ordinary printed calendar,-and of affixing upon the face of the card or sheet upon which the calendar is printed upon a blank space between the two printed columns of the calendar, or elsewhere upon the blank space left for the purpose in the printing, a small box or case, within which is arranged a ribbon or strip of paper or cloth, on which is printed the numerals representing the days of the month, and which ribbon is wound around a pair of small parallel rollers, and which rollers, projecting beyond the sides of the box in which they have their bearings, furnish a handle or handles by which the rollers may be turned, and the ribbon moved so as to present in succession the days of the month printed upon the ribbon opposite a suitable opening in the face of the box.
In the accompanying drawing'the calendar is shown as printed on two parallel columns, with ablank space between. The box or receptacle for holding the movable ribbon, and
affixed to the card, is shown at a, the rollers projecting from the sides of the box at b b. The number representing the day of the month is shown through the circular opening at c.
In constructing the box for holding the rollers and ribbonI use card-board paper as the best material, and by means of a proper steel die the paper blank for forming the box is cut into such a form as to be readily folded into the desired shape of the box, and with theopenings for the rollers to work in, and for showing the number representing the days of the month complete.
The ribbon upon which the numbers for the days of the month are printed may be of paper, muslin, silk, or any suitable material, and the color of the ribbon may be of any fancy color or plain white. I prefer that the color of the paper of which the box is made should contrast with that of the ribbon, so as to be ornamental. The box should be made as shallow as isconsistent with the due arrangement of the paper, ribbon, and operating-rollers within it. It is fastened to the face of the calendar-card by glue or paste, or other suitable means.
Compound calendars thus constructed and arranged are made with very slight expense, and unite the convenience and utility of the monthly, weekly, and adjustable day-calendar in a form which is not only very convenient and useful, but may be made extremely ornamental.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl A calendar composed of the box or receptacle a, for holding and operating the rotary dating-ribbon, constructed, arranged, and operating as described, in combination withthe fixed printed calendar-card, substantially as set forth.
