EDWIN EVANS, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOBES FOR BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,1 12, dated December 14, 1875; application filed November 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN EVANS, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Globes for Gas and other Burners, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in providing the up per end of a glass globe for gas or other burners with a flange or rim, which projects outwardly and horizontally, or substantially so, from the upper edge of the glass globe, and which is in one piece with the body ofthe globe, and is prepared in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by coating its snrfaces, either upper or lower, or both, with silver, to downwardly reflect the light which strikes it from the flame of the burner.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a glass globe prepared according to the present invention, for the purpose stated. Fig. 2 is a plan view, reduced in size.
In the drawings, A represents a glass globe, made as ordinarily, except as to the features of this invention. This globe A, at its upper portion B, is coated with silver, as shown at a, so as to downwardly reflect the light which strikes on such parts from the burning of the flame at the burner on which the globe is used G, a flange or rim at the upper edge B of the globe A. This flange projects outwardly and horizontally, or substantially so, and is coated, as at b, with silver, to secure a downward reflection therefrom of the light which strikes the same from the flame of the burner.
The flange or rim 0 is shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, as in another plane from that shown in'the same figure by the heavyblack lines;-and in lieu of using silver as the coating material, other materials may be used and therefore I do not intend to limit myself to any particular'line of direction in which the flange 0 projects and extends, so long as it suitably projects to enable a surface to be obtained to downwardly reflect the light; nor do I intend to'limit myself to any particular material as a coating to give the reflection of light herein described;
Having now described my invention, what
