COMBINATION ASH TRAY AND CIGARETTE SNUFFER.

My invention relates to combination ash trays and cigarette snuffel-s, and has for its object the provision of a new and imprpved form and arrangement of parts of a device of this t 'pe by which a plurality of cigarettes may e snuii'ed so as to prevent continued burning or smoking and by which the device may be quickly and conveniently cleared of the snuted cigarettes and ashes and substantially cleaned. Itis another object of my 1nvention to improve devices of this type 1n which a tubular part or parts are utilized for snuiiing the cigarettes by providing means for pushing the cigarettes and ashes out of the.

tubes or sockets as may be desired, such means being preferably arranged so that all of the tubes or sockets can be cleaned at the same time by a single stroke or movement of the cleaning means. It is vanother object of my invention torimprove devices of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred meansby which I have accomplished my several objects are illustrated in the drawing and are hereinafter specifically described. That which I believe to be new and desire `to cover by Letters Patent is set forthin the claims.

Referring .now to the several figures in which correspondin partsare indicated by the same reference caracters, 10 indicates a tray formed of sheet metal, having an.out wadly extending annular flange 11 formed integrally therewith, the ange 11 in turn being provided with a downwardly extending ange 12 formed integrallytherewith. The outwardly extending flange 11 of the tray is provided with a plurality of sockets 13 therein, such sockets, in the construction shown, being in the form of tube sections 14 secured at their upper ends in suitable openings through the flange 11. -The sockets 13 are arranged in pairs about the tray, with grooves 15 pressed 5o in the upper'face of the flange between adjacent pairs of sockets. n

Below thetray member 10, I have provided an auxiliary tray member 16 also formed of sheetmetahbeing provided with an upwardly extending flange 17 having a snug working. t within the'ilange 12 of the tray member 10V kthe tubular socket members 14 when the plate 19 is in position upon the upper end of the iange 18. The plungers 20, each in the form of a rod section, are loosely or pivotally mounted upon the plate 19 in vorder to facilitate the engagement of the plungers with the tubes 1.4 when the parts are being put together 1n thelr assembled position, this looseness of mounting also serving to give the plungers an easy sliding movement through the socketsA as hereinafter described without the necessity for accurate machine Work in the manufacture ofthe device. The connection ofeach of the plungers with the plate or base 19 comprises in the construetibn shown in eiect a universal joint by which' the desired easy adjustment is eii'ect-ed. 'The plungers 20 as shown are held in position by means of bolts 21 having beveled heads and passing loosely through openings in the base 19 into tight engagement with openings in the lower ends of the rod sections 20. A handle 22 of any suitable type is secured upon the bottom face of the base 19. 9o With the parts inthe position as shown in l Fig. 2, the sockets provided by the tube sections 14 are available for use for snuiiing cigarettes in the well-understood manner, the sockets being of a size to receive the ordinary cigarette more or less snugly therein. When it is desired to clean the tray, the sockets can be cleared of cigarettes and ashes by an upward movement of the base 19 for carrying t e plungers 20 upwardly through the tubes 14 10g into the position as shown in Fig. 3, the movement of the plate 19 to such position being effected by upward pressure von the plate or on the handle 22 through the opening defined by the flange 18. While I prefer to employ a construction 'substantially as shown in my drawing, it will be understood that I do not limit the invention to the form shown except so far as certain of the claims may be specifically so limited, since it is evident that'changes might well be made in the form and appearance of m device without departing from the spirit o my invention.

1. A device of the type described, comprising in combination a tray having a-series of upwardly open sockets arran ed thereabout, and means movably mounte on said tray adapted by a single stroke to clear said sockets.

2. A device of the type described, comprising in combination a tray having a socket open through the tray, an auxiliary tray member underneath the socket, and a plunger supported from said auxiliary tray 'and movable with respect thereto through said socket.

3. A device of the type described, comprising in combination a tray having a tubular socket therethrough, and a plunger mounted in the lower end of said socket and movable upwardly with respect to the tray for clearing thesocket.

4. A device of the type described, comprising in combination a tray having a plurality of upwardly op'en sockets arrangedthereabout, plungers mounted in the lower ends of said sockets respectively, and a base on which said plungers are mountedadapted by an upward lmovement to clear said sockets.

5. A device of the type described, comprisingin combination a tray having a plurality of upwardly open sockets .arranged thereabout, plungers mounted in the lower ends ing in combination a tray having a plural-` of said socketsI respectively, and a base on which said plungers lare pivotally mounted adapted by an upward movement to clear said sockets.

A device ofthe type described, comprising in combination a tubular member, supportingmeans for holding said tubular member normall in upright position, a plunger, and means or supporting said plunger wlthin said tubular member below the upper end thereof and for moving the plunger upwardly through the tubular member for clearing it.

10. A device of the type described, comprising in combination a tray having an upwardly open socket therein, and a plunger normally held by ravity in lowered position within said soc et and movable upwardly therein for clearing the socket.
