Description

INVENTOR @295e E ATTO R N EY April 23, 1929.

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
POLISHING MACHINE.
Application Ied September 14, 1926. Serial No. 135,412.
This invention comprehends the provision of a polishing machine, which is simple in construction and 'convenient to handle and manipulate, being primarily intended for polishing nickellat-ed railiators and bii1i1p ers of an autoinolbile, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrange nient of' parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application like liumerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation.
Figure Q is a sectional View on line 2m? of Figure 1. 4
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing one of the polishing tools associated with its respective shaft.
Figure el is a longitudinal sectional -view through the polishingr tool.
Referring to the drawing in detail 1l) in dicates an electric motor, the casing of which is equipped with a handle 11 by means of which the machine or device can .be convenient-lv handled for the purpose intended. The motor includes a shaft 12 which is provided with gears 13 adjacent the ends thereof, and these gears mesh with similar gears 1+i carried bv shafts 15 arranged at either side of the inoton shaft 12. The shafts 15 are journaled and housed in a suitable casing 16 arranged at one end of the motor casing, and may if desired be welded to the latter. The casing 1G may be formed in two sections and one of the sections includes four parallel transversely extendingeleinents such as 8 provided with hearings 9 shown as projecting elements in Figure 1, assumed to be apertured for the journals of the shafts (said projecting ele iuents constituting bearings being illustrated in section). The switch for the motor is arranged within a handle 11 and indicated at 17. It will be noted upon inspection of Figure 3 that each shaft 15 is provided with an extension 18 which terminates to provide a sleeve-li ke portion 1.9 threaded onto the adjacent end of the main section 15. The sections 18 can vai-y in length and be quickly attached the section 18 of the shaft, with which it is held associated by a slot and pin connection. The pin 22 projects from the section 18 of the shaft, while the bore of the tool is rovided with a bayonet slot 23 to accornmo ate the pin. It will be further noted that the section 18 of either shaft can be detached from the niain section thereof, so that only one polishing tool may be used at a time, or more than one tool used at the same time if desired.
Vhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, Il desire to have it understood, that I do not limit inysel'i to what is herein shown and described and that such changes maybe resort-ed to when de sii'ed as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is: y
A machine of the character described comprising an electric motor including a shaft, driven shafts arranged at either side of the motor shaft and geared thereto, a frame including transverse elements in two parallel series, providing bearings for the shafts, and
the gearing including two series of gear wheels positioned in operative relation bythe transverse elements of the frame, each driven shaft including an extension removably associated therewith, a polishing tool for each driven shaft, and having a longitudinal bore for the reception of said extension, a slot and pin connection between the tool and said extension, whereby the tool can be detached therefrom, and a handle for the machine.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature.
