PATENT OFFICE.
NEW YORK, N. Y.
CABINET FOR RADIOS AND PHONOGRAPHS.
v.Application `filed July i,v
This invention relates to a combination` cabinet for a radio set and phonograph, par.
ticularly adapted for use as lionseliold furniture. The object of the invention is to provide a combination cabinet designed to represent a baby grand piano.
A further object of the invention 1ste provide a combination cabinet comprising a mechanism adapted to elevate the radio set and phonograph contained therein.
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of my improved combination cabinet.
Fig. 2 .is a top perspective view thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view thereof, illustrating in particular the mechanism adapted to elevate the radio set .and phonograph. v
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the means of operating the elevating mechanism embodied therein.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the elevating clutch mechanism as embodied in my improved combination cabinet.
Fig. 6 is a reduced fragmentary horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
As here embodied my improved' com bination cabinet comprises a cabinet deslgned to represent a baby grand piano 10 provided With the usual leg's 11, key board 12, keys 13,
and a cover 14, hinged thereto, as at 1.5. The
hinged thereto, as at 18, and adapted toenclose or cover the keys 13 and the key board 12.
It will be understood that the interior of the baby grand piano 10 does not contain the usual 'mechanical components of the usual piano.
As here embodied the mechanism adaptedto elevate the radio set 19, and the phono-- graph 20, comprises brackets 21 and 22, positioned in the interior of the baby grand 5o piano 10, and attached to the base member 23, thereof. The brackets 21 and 22, are provided with vertical apertures having threads formed therein, adapted to rotativelyA support the screw members 24 and 25, respec-A tively. The brackets 21 and 22, are provided with lug elements 26, 27 and 28 and 29,1e-

spectively, positioned'so as to provide intermediate openirrgs, adapted to receive the worm gears 30 and31, provided with axial threaded apertures, adapted to receive the above mentioned screw members 24 and 25, respectively. The Worm gears 30 and 31,
mesh with the-Worm Wheels 32 and 33, re-
to the shafts 41 and 42, respectively,'rota tively mounted in the brackets 43 and 44, respectively, attached to the base member 23, of the baby grand piano 10. The bevel gears 39 and 40, mesh with similar bevel gears 45 and 46, respectively, attached to the operating shafts 3'4 and '35, respectively. The shafts 41 and 42, are positioned 4in alignment, in the same horizontal plane, and have their free extremities in close proximity. The clutch member 47, is attached to the free extremity of the shaft 42, and is provided with radial openings 48, adapted to be slidably engaged by the radial teeth 49 of the clutch -member 50. The clutch member 50, is slidably mounted on the free extremity of the shaft 41. The .free extremity of the shaft 41, is splined as at 41 adapted to engage in a similar splined axial aperture formed in the clutch member 50, so as to permit the clutch member 50 to drive or rotate the shaft 41. The clutch member 50 is provided with a co-axial groove 51 adapted to receive the enlarged extremity 52, of the clutch lever 53. rlhe clutch lever 53 is pivotally attached, intermediately thereof, as at 54, to the bracket 55, attached to the inside of the key board 12. The clutch lever 53, extends through an elongated aperture 56 formed in the key board 12, and is provided with an enlarged free extremity 57, or handle element.
The plate members 58 and 59, are provided With axial openings, formed, at the bottom thereof, adapted to receive theupper extremities of the screw members 24 and 25, respectively. The plate members 58 and 59,
the phonograph 20, which are placed thereare adapted to support the radio set 19 and 20, have attached thereto, and extended therefrom, finger members 60 and 61, 'respectively, adapted to slidabl engage in vertical guide members 62 an 63, respectively, attached to the interior of the baby grand piano 10, as a means of holding the radio set 19, and the phonograph 20, in a non-rotatable position, when 'the said radio set 19 and phonograph 20 are elevated or lowered.
The foregoing described construction being such as will permit the radio set 19 andy the phonograph 20 to be elevated separately, from the interior of the baby grand piano 10, so as to be exposed 4to view and positioned so as to be accessible forv use. It should be understood that, the radio set 19 may be elevated, and the phonograph 2O lowered, or vice versa, when the above mentioned clutch members 47 and 50 are engaged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
In a combination radio and phonograph cabinet, a worm gear connected for raising or lowering a radio set upon rotation in om' p or l1n the other direction, a Secondv worm gear connected for raising or lowering a phonograph upon rotation in one or in the bevel gearv on .the said first shaft, a fourth evel gear on the other of the said aligned shafts, meshing with the bevel rear on the said second shaft, and a clutch fior connecting the aligned shafts, so that the first shaft may be turned for operating the first worm gear alone, orv the second shaft'- may be turned for operating the second worm gear' alone, or eitherthe first or second shafts may be turned for simultaneously operating theworm gears.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
Jos AoosTA.
