This invention re l ates.. to rock drill bit structures and it consists in the novel arrangements of its parts and features as hereinafter described and claimed.
Under revailingpractices it is customary to assemble mating sections or halves in the form of a bit body, and these sections are screwed into the end of a drill collar when the body is applied thereto. It has been found to be practically impossible to sitive- 1y hold the body sections immova le with relation to each other and the bodyfixed with relation to the collar. Slight relative movements incident to impact and vibration occur,
' and such movements cause the threads to strip and stick into the drill collar so that it is almost impossible to remove or separate the parts. Weldin hard bronze and other metals into the drill collar and then threading the same has been resorted to. for the pu ose of. correcting or preventing such ob ections.-

At intervals it is necessa to remove t e bit, body from the collar, sit or by breaking out or unscrewing, and then separating the sections of the body in order to renew worn reamers' or cutters. With the, present invention it is unnecessary to detach the body from the collar when itis desired to renew the reamers-and cutters. However should it be necessary to remove'the body from the collar, this may be readily accomplished by unscrewing, in that the convolutions of the threads of the body and collar'are continuous from end to end and are not made up of originally aligned sections which may shift or' move withrela'tion toeach other. v
' Another object of the invention is to render 9- the cutters and reamer elements readily acces- I sible'for purposes of repair or replacement, .andto that end the invention contemplates a novel manner of constructing the body whereby a movable memberthereof be lltlllZGd to carry one of the cutters as wel as to cooperate with the main part of the body for holding the reamer elements in'convenient detach I abl relation thereto.

The bit structure also includes a swinging body section 11 adapted to nest or fit in the recess 5 of the body member. The section 11 is bifurcated at its upper end and is provided with arcuate end surfaces 12 which bear against the arcuate surface 6 defining the end wall of the recess in the body member. Bolts 13 pass transversely through the body memher and the body section and carry pins 14. Said bolts and pins serve to hold the body section in aclosed position in the recess 5 as best shown in Figure 1. The body section 11 is pivotally connected with the lug 7 by means of a pivot pin 15 which passes transversely through the bifurcated end of the section and the lug.
The structural arrangement is such that the thread 4; cannot strip'or stick in the thread 2. Therefore the body may be readily detached from the rill collar. The bolts 13 may be withdrawn from the body member and the body section 11, and the section may be swung to an open position with relation to the body member as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing, and hence the reamers and cutters may be renewed without detaching the bit structure from the collar. The engaging arcuate end surfaces of the recess 5 and the body section 11 permit. the section to swing with relation to the body member and at the same time any thrust strain applied to the pivoted section 11 when open or closed 1s transmitted to the body member 3 along sa d arcuate surface, thus relievin the pivot pm of such strain. Also the lug being located at the end of the recess 5 and joinin with the arcuate end wall thereof adds rigidity to the structure and holds the pivoted section- 11 in proper registry wth the body member 3 and the receiving recess 5 therein. This relieves the bolts 13 of torsional strain when the tool is being used for drilling in rock or other hard or dense material.
It is to be noted that the lowerends of the body members 3 and 11 have the diverging lower end faces 16. 16, thus providing a transverse pocket in which the cutters work, the bases, or large ends of said cutters, being disposed toward said faces 16, 16 and formed integrally with said respective diverging faces 16 are the inwardly and downwardly converging bearing pins 17, which taper slightly toward their free ends and fitted over eachxpin there is a thimble like washer 18. each washer having an annular flange 19 which is bolted to the corresponding face 16 by means of suitable set bolts as 20 and these washers take the wear incident to the rotation of the cutters 10, protecting the body members against such wear, and these washers, when worn, may be readily removed and replaced,
There is a diagonal bore 21 through each of the members 3 and 11 which extend axially through the pins 17 and which are reduced forming internal annular shoulders 22. Bearing bolts 23 are provided whose inner ends 24 are reduced and threaded into the corresponding cutters 10 and by their reduction there are formed thereon external annular shoulders 25 which abut the opposite part of the corresponding cutters 10. The outer end of each bearing bolt has an enlarged head 26 which abuts the 1.- )rresponding shoulder 22 and thus retains the corresponding cutter on the pin 17, the shoulder 25 preventing said bearing bolt 23 from being screwed up too tight so that the cutter 10 will not have too close a fit on the washer 18 surrounding the pin 17. The bearing bolt 23 may be equipped with a bushing 27 formed of brass. or other suitable material. I The outer end of the bore 21 may be filled with a lubricant which is retained therein by means of a suitable plug, as 28, screwed into the outer end of said bore and this lubricant finds its wa into the bearing of the bolt 23 as well as of t e cutter 10.
There is a novel type of side reamer, shown in Figures 4 and 5, which is also mounted in a novel manner. This reamer is designated by the numeral 29 and is located in the side recess of the body, one on each side. The reamer is cylindrical in generalcontour and has an axial bearing on the bearing pin 30, the upper and lower ends of this pin having the transverse keys 31, 31, th-erethrough, whose ends project into sockets as 32 in the abutting face of the body member 3 and the section 11 respectively, so as to hold the pin 30 against rotation. During the operation of the bit in drilling the pressure on the reamers 29 will be inwardly so that the outer side of the pin 30 will take the wear and when this side of the pin has become worn the pin may be readily turned half-way around and will then serve the purpose, practically, of a new pm.
While the essential features of the invention have been herein described, it will be understood that minor changes in the form, proportion and details of the various parts of the construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing an of the advantages of the invention.
I claim:
1. A drill bit for earth boring operations comprising a body member having an integral collar engaging portion at one end and a side recess, a body section pivotally connected to the body at one end of the recess and adapted to lie flushly therein, and said body and said recess being provided with complemental chamber forming portions, a reamer mounted in said chamber forming portions, means for locking the body section and body together at a point remote from their point-of pivotal connection, and cutters carried by Ighei lower end of both the body section and 2 A drill bit for earth boring operations comprising a body consisting of two sections havin their meeting aces located substantially 1n the plane of the axis of the bit, one of said sections being provided with an integral collar attaching portion, means for holding said sections together, and said sections of the body being provided with complemental chamber forming recesses, a reamer element adapted to be removably fitted in the chamber formed by said recesses, and cutters carried by both of said body sections.

A drill bit structure for earth boring operations comprisi a main cutter carrying body and a move 1e cutter carrying section :pivoted to the cutter carrying body on an axis at right angles to the bit axis, said body end section having complemental chamber forming portions in their meet-in faces, reamers mounted in said chamber orming portions, and means for lockin said cutter carrying section and body togetier adjacent their earth engaging ends.
4. A drill bit structure for earth boring operations comprising a main having an integral collar attaching .portion at one end, a cutter carried by the other end, and a movable section pivoted adjacent the collar engaging portion and adapted to swing toward and away from the main body member, a cutter carried by the lower end of said movable section and said main body portion and said movable section having complemen: tal chamber forming portions at their meeting faces, reamers removably mounted in said chamber forming ortions, and means for locking the movab e section and main body together, adjacent the cutter carrying ends thereof.
