IMPROVEMENT IN PRIVIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,967, dated December 14, 1875; application filed June 28, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUsTAv SCEUMACHER,

v of the city, county, and State of NewYork,

have invented a new and useful Improvement in Privies, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

This invention consists of devices by which the repugnant character of the privies at present in general use in crowded cities, especially in tenement-houses, is greatlyv improved, and by which to prevent the malarious effects which the present crude and objectionable condition of these structures necessarily has, not only upon those compelled to use them, but upon those living in their proximity.

In the drawing accompanying this specication a sectional elevation across the seat is represented, in which A is the cess-pool or vault, in or without connection with the sewer. b is a capacious tube, which may Widen upward to the seat d, to which it is attached, and is kept closed below by a valve,'c, arranged in such a manner as to permit of the downward passage of the night-soil, while it prevents the escape of the obnoxious gases from the cess-poo1 or sewer in that direction, so that the only exit for these gases is by a roomy air-chimney, f, at the back of the seat. To facilitate their egress there an apron, n, covering the vault, and perforated for the passage of the tube b, rises from the ooring in front to the back of the seat, Where it connects with the air-chimney f, and the latter may be carried as high as required to secure the escape of the gases in a comparatively- In ordinary backhouses generally exposed to the action of the sun the heat is frequently excessive, and, in connectionwith the efduvia emitted, actually unbearable. To alleviate this evil I have contrived a ceiling, j, some distance below and separate from the roof m, which leaves an open space between the roof and the shaded ceiling, and cooled by the free circulation of air.

Openings in the ceiling, for the purpose of Ventilating the privy itself, can be arranged to be closed or opened at option.

While in ordinary privies the air-chimney reaches far enough down into the cess-pool, its

intended action is rendered inoperative by the 1 fact that the effluvia and cess-pool gases find a readier escape through the seat-hole. For this reason ithas proved a uselessexpense to raise the air-chimneys of ordinary privies to the top of adjoining buildings. There is, however, a nearly-constant draft of cold air within the sewer, causing, especially during the cold season of the year, great discomfort to those using the privies, and frequently serious sickness. This is perfectly obviated by the tube and valve arrangement' of my improved privies, which reaches far enough down into the cess-pool not to be exposed to the full effects of the hot summer air, nor generally to freezing in Winter.

All the above-specied improvements can be applied to the privies now in use at a trilin g expense. of privies may be connected at a certain elevation into one which is carried up high enough to render the escaping gases innocuous.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the tube b, provided at bottom with valve c, the sink A, apron bz, and air-chimney f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the hinged lid fi, rod g, and door h, substantially as and for the purpose set lforth.
