eabinetmakers clamps. y Y j j y. z 'Carpenters and ,cabinetmakersare' '1re-y' quently called upon todo jobs. that'requ'ire the use of clampsy and several different kinds of clamps are manufactured and sold' for this purpose.
It is theobject of thisinvention tofp'roduce a clamp that shall be ofV simple and substantial construction and which-canbe uickly applied 'to `and removed 'ronrthey work. 1 j
The above Vand otherjobjects that -niaybe-v fcome apparentasf the descriptionproceeds are attainedrby meansof arconstruetion and an arrangementot parts *thatV will herein after be described in detail and reference for this `purpose will now Abe had Vto the acco'mpanyingl drawing in 'whichy the preferred"l embodiment of kthe invention lustratedand in which: y Y L Fig. 1` is a lplan View of the device; Y Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinalseetion `:taken on line 24,-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section lhe improved clamp as illustrated on ythe i drawing consists o'ftwo levers 8 and 9 .which are duplicates but are reversely arranged.
' by rivets 11. n at any convenient point between the ends ot V.These levers have been shown as constructed from wood, but they may be made 'et iron or steel, if desired. A metal bar is located on 4eaeh side of the levers and vhave their ends pivotally connected `to the latter The pivots 11 may be located the levers but Vare preferablynearer tothe larger ends 12 Ythan to the Smaller ends 13.
A guide block 14 is located between' the transverse bars 10 and is secured `to the latter bymeans of rivets 15. This' guidev block is spaced equidistantly from the pivots 11 and is provided with an openingl.- Anut 17 has pivotallyattached to its oppositesldes two pairs of links 18 whose other ends aref attached to the ends 12 of levers by means of pivots 19. A tubular member 20 has a "if desired.: i Y .n

or other, [equivalent means for rotating the v y t .60 vtubular member 20 at its louter end. The inner en dof'member 2O is f normally in con- Y' tactl yv1t'l1..o neA side ofthe guide rblock 14 and vhas been lshown'as` provided fwith a steell ferrule 23 which,` 'however, may be omittedy Mare clamping jaws'25, The ends 13 have va convexinner surface 26 that. cooperates with. av Corresp ending concavev surface on the jaws (Figs-1 and') sothatfthe jaws may thereby main# rockto alimitedextent and A parallel rwh en spaced notbe brought into astraightline but will always inclinedto lthe Vsame side as shown in Fig". A1. It' is obvious that if the tubular ly andkaganstftlie; guide member 14,v that y' this will* produce a force vthat willmove the 'Y nut 17towards the right'('FijgL 1)l therebyvr vided with a threaded section`29 with which the threads the rod 31 isrotated, it will move axially either towards or away from the jaws 25, Y
depending on the direction of rotation.
Let us now'assu'me that-the job involves f `the problem .of securing member 35 tomember 2e by glue; Member '2s-1S ma of au clamped between jaws 25 by rotating tubular member 20 so as to straighten' the toggle,
lVhen i no l part 35 is then put into position and rody i 31L rotated so as to engage member 35 and force it against part 28. It will be observed that this vclamping device comprises bei" and that it: has lnoconnection withv "member le which merely serves as a guide forrod 3l and as an abutment `for rod 20.
a pair ofspacedjaws and means for moving them vtowards and away from each other soi as to clamp and rele-ase an object andan f independent clamping membermovable in a direction at right angles to the lmovement of the jaws.
In Figs. G and 7 I have illustrated a slightly modified 'ormpt*construction in` which the jaws 25 have been replaced by jaws 36 which areV shaped somewhat as shownin F102' 6.l These' jaws instead Vof being secured to the levers 8 'and 9 by means of screws are each heldin place by vtwo round plates '36, each of which isideiitical with'the others and are provided withdiametricallylocated openings for they recept-ion of the pivot/pins 38. 'Vhcn the clamp is applied to any article for `the purpose oit' securing the `clamp toit, the jaws 36 are so arrangedv that the pins? 3 8 which pass through the jaws are to Ybe inside'oifthe corresponding pinsl in ends 13. Vh'en rod lis operatedso as to produce a vforce tendingto move the clamped inember outwardly v thereV is a tendency to move jaws 36 to the dot and dashpositi'on shown in Fig. 6i Any Y movement outwardly of jaws 36 Vproduces a toggle effectthat increases the clamping force.'`
Attention is 'called to the fact rod l is threadedly engaged wit-'lithe tubular mem- As a result of this construction the force exerted by rod 3l is added'to the lforce exerted bythe tubular member 20 for thev 31 had a threaded connection withl block 14:
instead of with the tubular member,` the force exerted by it would nothave any yei'l'ect upon. the clamping action of the toggles.
From the above it will be apparent that I have produced a clamping devicewhich can be quickly secured to an article and which is also provided `with a clamping member. that moves in a direction at right fanglesto the other clamping members.
Having described my invention what I claim as new is: Y j
l. A device of the class described com- Yp'risingyin-combination, a pair of-spaced levers, a connecting device pivotally connected witlr the levers intermediate their ends; -a clamping jaw secured t0 one end of each oi' said levers Ybynieans of two links each ofwhichfhas one end pivoted to the lever and the other end pivoted to the jaw,
a toggle Vmechanism connecting the other ends of said levers,` means for changing the angularity of said toggle, saidf last named means comprising a tubular screw having a threaded connection with the toggle device and having one end inV engagement with the Connecting device, a clamping member Vcomprising arod passing` through the tubular screw, said rod havinga threaded connec-I tion with the interior of the tubular screw and means'for rotating said rod;
.2. A'clampfof the class specified comprising, in combination, a pair of spaced 'levers lying in the same plane, a connecting device pivotally connected withl each of said levers at aupoint intermediate its ends, a clamping jaw mov-ably connected to the adjacent end of each lever by means of :two links each of which Vhasone end pivoted 5to the lever'and the `.other end pivotedtothe :jaw,'a toggle mechanism pivotally connected to the other ends of said levers, said toggle mechainsm comprising a nut'and ytwo, pair oi toggle links, a hollow tubular member threadedly Y connected with said nut, means connected to t-he outer end of said tubular member for rotating the same, the wallet the opening in. the threaded member having a threaded section, a rod 'extendingthrough the tubular member and thieadedly vconnected therewith and means :tor rotating the rod.y
' In testimony whereof I afhx my signature.
