Description
D. H. SHOURDS. DEMIJ'OHN FOR CONTAINING MALT LIQUORS.
Patented Dec. 7, 1875.
I N. PETERS, PRO'KO-LITHDGRAPNER, WASHINGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. SHOURDS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEMIJOHNS FOR CONTAINING MALT LIQUORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,906, dated December 7, 1875; application filed November 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID H. SHOURDS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have in vented an Improved Demijohn for Containing Malt Liqu0rs,of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish families with malt liquors, in comparatively small quantities, at a less price than heretofore, by means of a demijohn which can be easily carried from place to place, and from which the contents can be withdrawn from time to time without any deterioration of the liquor which remains in the vessel.
Malt liquors for family use have heretofore been put up in small bottles-a tedious operation, which materially increases the cost of the liquors.
In place of the small bottles I use the demijohn illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the vessel being made, preferably, of glass, and
large enough to contain one, or two, or more gallons.
The handle I), by which the vessel is carried about, may be attached to or form a part of the said vessel, or may be attached to or form a part of the wicker-work with which the vessel is, by preference, surrounded, a portion only of the said wicker-work being shown in the drawing.
After the malt liquors have been introduced into the vessel a cork, e, is driven into the mouth d, and into an opening in the cork is tightly fitted or screwed the stem of a faucet, h, a vent, w, being made in the side of the vessel at any other suitable point, and the vent By the use of the above-described vessel families can be supplied with malt liquors in quantities less than are contained in ordinary barrels or half-barrels, so as to insure the desired freshness of the liquor while it lasts, the quantity being large enough to obviate the expense attending the use of numerous small bottles. In fact, the liquor can be furnished in the demijohns at half the expense demanded for the same liquor in the ordinary small bottles.
I claim as my invention The within-described demijohn, consisting of the vessel A, its'handle b, cork e-With faucet h, and vent-hole at, all being combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DAVID H. SHOURDS. Witnesses:
ELLWOOD T. DEETZ, HARRY SMITH.
