IMPROVEMENT IN MATS FOR 'PRESSING OIL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS HAMILLEO MURPHY, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented an Improvement in Mats for Pressing Oils.

The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.

My invention relates to that class of woven mats orsqueezers which are made use of for pressing oils, fats, &c.; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same letters, Figure 1 is a plan view, showing the manner in which metallic wire is interwoven with hair, wool, cotton, or hemp rope. Fig. 2 is a perspective view.

Metallic wire, in combination with hair, wool, cotton, or other suitable material, has heretofore been used in the construction of this class of mats for the purpose of insuring the following advantages: rigidity and utility to support themselves when loaded for the press;

increased durability and economy in' keeping the same in repair; less wear on the bag operated on, and greater ease of manipulation.

The mat consists of two parts, A and B, hinged together at the center, and is formed by weaving wire on all the ribs without crossing the center of the mat with the wire.

a designates the rope, which is led alternately over the ribs b and b; thence alternately backward and forward over the ribs b thence alternately over the ribs 1) and b thence alternately backward and forward over the ribs b, and so on until the mat is completed.

The hinge between the parts A and B is formed by those parts of the rope which are led from one part to the other, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.

One or more strands of wire, 0, are led backward and forward alternately over and under the ribs b, and between the pieces of rope, until the part A is completed. The part B- is completed in the same manner.

I am aware that a patent was granted May 19, 1874, to W. H. Orocker for mats for pressin g oils, and I claim nothing therein described as my invention.

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A mat for pressing oils composed of" rope and wire, the wire being woven on all the ribs without crossing the center, as described, and the rope being woven alternately backward and forward over the ribs 12 and b, as described.
