Description

April 9, 1929. H, GRAHAM 1,708,722
ADJUSTABLE JAW WRENCH Filed Sept. 1927 INVENTORH 6 1722; a.
TE STATES as o ,5 to,
HOWARD GRAHAM, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALAJEEJEIA.
ADJUSTABLE-JAVI' WRENCH.
Application filed September The invention relates to wrenches of the Stillson type and has for is object the provision of means by which adjustment of the jaws maybe quickly effected.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench having a U-shaped member in which is pivotally mounted an operating lever having one of its jaws thereon and an L-shaped member slidably mounted in the U-shaped member and having the other jaw to coact with the jaw on the lever, said lever and i.shaped member having interengaging gear teeth to clamp the member in the wrench, the pivot pin being eccentrically mounted in the ll-shaped member, and turnable to release the gear face on the lever from engagement with the L-shaped member to admitof adjustment of the jaws to the article to be turned.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the improved wrench,
Figure 2 is a top edge view,
, Figure 8 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 1.
The device will be described in detail hereinafter and reference will be made to the drawings in which similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
,A U-shaped supporting member is provided for carrying the two jaws of the wrench and comprises side plates 2 and a cross block 3, said members being secured together by means of bolts 4. The operating lever 5 of the wrench is fulcrumed on the pin 6, that is in turn journaled between the side plates 2 by means of trunnions 7 and 8 on the respective ends thereof anl eccentric to its axis. The extended portion of the trunnion 8 non-circular in cross section indi :ated at 9 and has an arm 10 engaging said 'exten sion 9. 11 indicates a bolt and nut secured to the pivot pin 6 and trunnions 7 and 8, axially of the trunnions'and holding the arm 10 in position by means of a washer 12. 18 designates a stud on arm 10 that engages in recesses 14 and 15 when the arm is in adjusted position. 16 indicates a jaw on the end of lever 5 that coacts with a jaw 17 on the lateral arm 18 of the bar 19 that is slidably mounted between the plates 2 and pro-' 1, 1927. Serial No, 216,893.
vided with a gear face 20 that engages a metal gear face 21 on lever 5.
In operation it will be apparent that with the parts in the position shown in Figure 3 by moving the lever 5 in a clockwise direct1on, bar 19 will be actuated to draw the jaw 17 towards the jaw 16 and the pipe or nut engaged by said jaws will be turned. In order to adjust the jaws for pipes and nuts of difi'erent sizes, the gear teeth 21 may be withdrawn from the gear teeth 20 by moving the arm 10 from the position shown in Figure 1 through an arc of 90 degrees until the stud 13engages recess 15. The bar 19 may then be adjusted in the U-shaped member 1 to adjust the distance between the jaws 16 and 17, and when the arm 10 is returned to its original position with the stud 13 resting in the recess 14 and the gear faces 20 and 21 engage operation of the lever 5 as before described will clamp the pipe or nut between the jaws for turning.
22 indicates lugs or projections on the bar 19 to limitthe outer movement of the jaw 17, and indicates lugs or projections on the lever 5 to limit the movement of the lover when the gear faces 20 and 21 are released.
What is claimed is 1. A wrench, comprising a support, an op erating lever pivotally mounted on said support and having a jaw thereon, a pivot pin connecting said lever and the support, a bar movably mounted on the support and having a jaw coacting with the first mentioned jaw, said lever and bar having gear faces adapted to engage, said pivot pin being eccentrically jcurnaled in the support to move the lever relatively to the bar to disengage the gear faces and permit movement of the bar to adjust the jaw thereon relatively to tl e jaw on the lever.
2. A wrench, comprising a U-shaped supporting member, an operating lever, a pivot pin pivot-ally connecting said lever and said member, said pivot pin being eccentrically journaled in the Ushapcd member. a jaw on said lever, a bar slidably mounted in said U shaped member and having a jaw coacting with the first mentioned jaw, coacting gear faces on the lever and bar, and means to rotate said pivot pin to disengage said gear faces and permit movement of the bar to adjust the jaw thereon relatively to the on the lever.
V 3. A wrench, comprising a U-shaped supporting member having recesses therein, an
operatingleverQa pivot pin pivot ally' conandhaving a'jaw coacting with the first mentioned jaw, coaeting gear faces on the lever and bar, an arm engaging szud pivot P111 to rotate it and release said gear faces from engagement to permit movement of the bar relatively to the lever to adjust the positions of the jaws thereon, and'a stud on said arm to engage said recesses to hold the pivot pin in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
