IMPRQVEMEINT IN CHANDELIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170.872., dated December 7, 1875; application filed June 2, 187 5.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN MATHEWS, of

Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Chandelier, of which the following is a specification The object of my said invention is to furnish a new and useful chandelier, which shall be simple in its construction and efi'ective for the purposes hereinafter set forth; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully and clearly described in the following.

My invention has reference to the construc tion of a chandelier with a casement about the central rod, with its base formed into a cover to shut down over the screw-cap, (designed for filling the tank), and so constructed that it can be raised for the purpose of filling the tank; and the following is such an exact description of the same that it will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.

In the drawings, A is a rod or support designed to support a chandelier, and should be of sufficient strength for that purpose; B, a covering of ornamental metal, so constructed that it can be raised to admit of the tank C being filled with oil and designed for that purpose; D D, arms or conductors, designed to conduct oil from the tank C to the burnert-anks E E, and should be arranged on a line horizontal to admit of the free passage of oil from tank to burners. F F are funnels or conductors, designed to receive all overflowing oil, and conduct the same to the tanks E E through the openings G. G are openings, designed to admit oil overflowing the burner to pass into the tanks E E, and also to allow the escape of gas that may collect in the tanks, and H is an opening designed to admit oil to the tank C. I use the common keroseneburner in my chandelier.

When it is desired to use my said invention it is only necessary to first fill the tank C at H, properly trim the burners, when the chandelier is ready for use, being used exactly as the ordinary kerosenelamp, with the exception that my invention is so constructed that it is to be suspended from the ceiling, and'presents the appearance of the ordinary gas-fixture or chandelier.
