Description
B. LINGANE.
AUTOMATIC FAN.
rammed Dec. 7,1875.
IJVVEJV'TOR Attorney ZINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BART LINGANE, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,863, dated December 7, 1875; application filed September 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BART LINGrANE, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Brush or Fans and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon,
of the frame which holds the paper or cloth brushes.
In the figures, A represents the beam or ceiling, to which the several parts are hung. B represents an ordinary frame for holding clock-work, said work being of the kind in general use for clocks. To the shaft of one of the wheels is secured a crank or crank-wheel, O. D D represent two metallic rods, which connect with the pulleys e e at their upper ends, and to their lower ends, at a: m, are hinged the bails or handles m m of the frame K. The pulleys c e are hung by screw-bolts, which take into the ceiling, as seen. F represents a metallic rod, which connects the crank-wheel O to one of the rods D.
The frame K is made of metal, and has a series of bars,l l, secured across it, upon which large sheets of paper or suitable cloths may be hung to frighten away the flies when the said frame is in motion.
mm are metallic bails or handles to the frame for making it hang level, and for connecting it to the rods which communicate motion to it.
The bails being looped into the hooks at the lower ends of the rods, the frame and its fans can be readily detached from the rods for renewing the fans, or for storing the same away in winter season, without disturbing the rods or the other mechanism.
G represents a cord, which is secured to one of the rods D. One end of this rod passes over a pulley at I, hung to the ceiling in a similar manner to the others, while the other passes through the eye of a bolt or over a pulley, as may be desirable, and has a weight, H, secured to it. This cord enables the frame to be operated by a boy-the boy drawingit in one direction, while the weight draws itin the other..
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a clock machinery,
crank-wheel O, pitman F, and rods D D, 0011- nectcd with the pulleys 00, the detachable frame K, provided with the fly-brushes, and with the bails m m, hinged at m a: to the rods D D, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1875.
BART LINGANE. Witnesses:
EDWARD GALVIN, PATRrcK OGoNNoR.
