Application iled March 22, 1927. Serial-No. 177,450.
My invention relates to a multiple switch having contacts for several circuits, and it has particular reference to that class of suchv devices that are used for illumination and ignition.
One of the objects of the device is-to provide. a multiple switch that is encased in a housing in .which the electrical ycontacts are concealed', and the device operated by means of a knob that works in a longitudinal slot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a multiple switch in which one or more circuits may be used, and'all circuits operated from a common knob without interference Ywith or from the other circuits.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an elevation view in part section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of one of the blade `terminals and terminal plate.
Figure 4 is a side view of the segment contact.
Figure 5 is a front viewy of the segment contact and segment terminal.
Similar numerals of reference indicateA similar parts thruout the several views. Referring to the drawings indicates a terminal plate that is inserted in the casing 1. The casing .1 is provided with a support 2 secured thereto, and a semicircular support 3 is fastened to the casing support 2 by means of bolts that are inserted into the holes 16. The purpose of the casing support 2 and the semi-circular support 3 are to provide the means whereby the switch may be fastened in position, andrftheswitch may be fastened in position byineans of the casing support 2, alone, or the semicircular support 3 may be lused 'in connection with the casing support'2 to fasten the switch around an .object by 'using 3 as a clamp. l p
The terminal plate 7 is piovided'with two blade terminals 9, and a stud 4 extends from each terminal, and an insulating bushing is placed over each terminal stud to prevent the current :from leaking into the terminal plate 7. A segment terminal 10 is placed centrally between the blade terminals 9 and a terminal stud 4 extends from the segment terminal, an insulating vbushing 3 is also placed over the segment terminal 10 to prevent any leakave from the current into the terminal plate The terminal studs 4 are the semicircular support 7 provided with nuts 5 for making connections to an electrical circuit. The inside of the terminal plate 7 is provided with insulating material S to prevent any leakage of the current into the terminal plate' 7.
A segment contact 11 is pivotally connected to the segment terminal 10, and the segment contact 11 is provided with a prokjection 21. A pin 17 passes thru the projection 21 on the segment Vcontact lland is held in position Vby ...means of the split washers 18, and the said pin is so designed that it may be rotated within the projection 21... A knob 12, which is composed of insu# latingmaterial, is secured to the-pin 17, and the device is operated by means of this knob. contact blade 14 is rigidly secured to the pin 17 and rotates with the said pin.
One side of the casing 1 is provided with a terminal stud 20 that passes thru the casing `and thru an insulating bushing ,6, and the stud is connected to the contact plate 13. The contact plate 13 consists ofiesilient inaterial and is turned over on the ends` as indicated by thev numeral 22, to allow a greater resiliency in the center of the contact plate 13 ,when it is brought in contact with the contact blade 14 which is causedI by operation of the knob 12. A casing insulation 23 is placed around the inside of the casing, and the contact plate 13 is held in contact with the casing insulation by means of the stud 20. Afsupport 21 is secured to the contact .plate 13 and extends to the bottom'of Y, the casing and is for the purpose of preventing the contact plate 13 from twisting or turning. The stud 2O is also provided with v connection and complete the circuit the operator moves the knob either to `the right or lef't, as the case may be, aloncr the slot 15 and this will causethe segment cntact to turn on the in 19 and make contact with the termi nal lade 9 as shown by the dotted lines of the segment contact. While the segmentV contact is in contact with the terminal blade 9, and it is desired to make contact with 'another circuit, all that is necessary is tol turn the knob 12 and the contact blade 95 The operation of the device is as follows:
14 Will be brought in contact with the conport for said casing, a terminal plate at tact plate 13. If desired to disconnect the tached to the inner side of the casing, a segment contact from the terminal blade 9 plurality of terminals attached to the terthis can-be done by simply moving the knob minal plate With terminal studs extending along the longitudinal slot 15 and the contherefrom, a Contact segment pivotally at- 25 tact blade 14 will slide along the contact tachedtooneof the said terminals, a conplate 13 and still retain the circuit between tact plate lof resilient material provided the contact plate 13 and the segment terwith a terminal stud extending therefrom, min-al 10. If it is desired to make connec'- an operating knob, provided with a con- 10 tion to the opposite terminal-blade 9, this tact blade attached to a pin extending from 30 can be done by moving the knob 12 farther saidl knob, and said pin rotatably attached along the slot 15 andthe segment Contact to projection on the segment terminal 11 will be brought in Contact with the opand operated to make various circuit conposite terminal blade 9 and complete the nections in cooperation with the various 15 circuit. terminal connections by moving or turning 35 Having thus described my invention what or moving and turning the said pin by means I claim as new, and desire to secure by ofthe knob along or within the longitudinal Letters Patent, isz-v i slot in the casing.
