Description

W. CAMPBELL SOUND WAVE CATCHER April 9, 1929.
Filed Nov- 19, 1927 UITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WALTER CAMPBELL, F SALEM, VIRGINIA.
SOUND-WAVE CAT CHER.
Application filed November 19, 1927.
The present invention relates to sound wave catchers or ear trumpets, and aims to provides a simple and inexpensive sound wave catcher to be applied to the ear so as to facilitate hearing.
Another object of the invention is the provision of such a device which may be folded so as to be carried in the vest pocket or other small space. V With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction. and arrangement of parts, as
hereinafter described and claimed. it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the sound wave catcher as applied to the ear.
Fig. 2 is a top view thereof.
Ft 3 is an inside elevation of the device.
Fig. at is an elevation of the ribs or bows folded together, the flexible membrane being; omitted for purpose of clcarne ss.
The device comprises a holding frame composed of the ribs or hows 7 and 8 which may be oi resilient wire or other suitable stock, and the tern'iinals thereof are hingedly connected, as at 5 thereby permitting the bows to be swung relatively to one another for folding and unfolding the device.
A membrane 10 of suitable fabric or other flexible material is attached to the bows 7 and 8 to be folded and unfolded therewith.
The how 7 is of a shape to serve as a clasp to embrace the car from in rear, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby supporting the device Serial No. 234,405.
conveniently from the ear, and when the device is uniolded or opened, it provides a forwardly opening; cup or trumpet to catch the sound waves and conduct same to the ear, thereby improving the hearing of the wearer. The device, when applied, resembles the use of the hand when cupped behind and outside of the ear, for the same purpose, it being the practice of persons afliicted with partial deafness to cup the hands behind the outside of the ears to catch the sound waves. The present device is convenient, being readily applied to and removed from the ear, and when the device is removed it may be folded flat so as to be readily carried in the vest pocket, purse or other small enclosure.
The bow s 8 may be of various sizes and forms according to the size and shape of cup or trumpet desired, and the device may be inexpensively manufactured.
Having thusdescribed the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A foldable sound wave catcher having a portion to embrace the ear.
2. A foldable sound wave catcher having a clasp bow to embrace the ear.
A foldable sound wave catcher adapted to be applied to the ear.
4t. A sound wave catcher comprising hing'edly connected bows and a membrane attached thereto.
5. A sound wave catcher comprising 'hingedly connected bows and a membrane attached thereto, one of the bows being adapted to embrace the ear.
lin testimony whereof I hereunto affix my si gnaturc.
WALTER CAMPBELL.
