IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-SEATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,8 [0, dated December 7, 1875; application filed May 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W. A. BRADFORD, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in School-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- 7 Figure l is a vertical transverse section of a seat having my improvement. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are details in perspective. 1 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a part of my invention shown in section.

This invention has relation to tilting schoolseats and it consists in the novelconstruction and arrangement of devices for controlli'ng the movement of the seat, said devices being adapted to produce friction independently of the hinges or pivots, and to thereby obviate the wear and injury to the latter otherwise caused.

Referring to the drawings, A A designate the side castings or supports of a movable school-seat, or combined seat and desk, having the projecting portions or ledges B for the reception of the seat 0. D are lugs entering recesses d in the under part of the scat near its inner edge. D I) are castings secured to the under side of the seat, apd hinged or pivoted to the lugs D, so that it maybe tilted as required. E are arms depending and projectin g inwardly from the castings D, of which they form a part, and formed with segmental slots e. 6 represent bolts passing through said slots from the side castings A, and holdin g on their inner ends nuts 6 metallic washers c and washer-cushions e of imlia-rnbber, or its equivalent. F designates curved plates depending from the hinge-pivots, and supporting the bolts 0, and affording frictional surfaces against which the arms E closely impinge, and thereby control the movement 01 the seat, so as to prevent it from falling from any slight pressure or from accidental causes. As the surfaces become smooth and worn from continued use, the consequent looseness of parts may be taken by means of the nuts. The cushions e serve to give the plates F elasticity, and allow the seat to move easily. G G designate the cushioned stops located on the upper and lower surfaces or edges, respectively, of the arms E, and impinging, when the seat is down, against the projections g g on the castings A A.

It will be observed that these stops are below the hinges, and on opposite sides of the center thereof. These stops-that is, stops arranged below the seat-pivot, and on opposite sides thereot', are already shown in an application now pending in behalf of Josiah Delph and W. A. Bradford; I therefore disclaim them in this application.

Having described my invention, I claim The curved slotted arms E, in combination with the bolts 6, nuts 0 and frictional plates F, substantially as shown and described.
