UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. ,N
SOFIE VICTOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SHUTTERS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,789, dated December 7, 1875; application led November 6, 1875. 4
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoEIE VICTOR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window-Shutter, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 represents a vert-ical transverse section of my improved window-shutter, taken on line c c, Fig. 2, and shown in position for ventilation; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line x w, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of referencev indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is intended to furnish for buildings of all kinds an improved-windowshutt-er that may be readily adjusted to combine the t'ree circulation of air and shade of an awning with the protecting features of the common shutter; and the invention consists of an outer shutter-frame witholtslats, to the top part ot' which is hinged a'sepaate shutter, that may be retained in outwardly-inclined position by folding brace-rods, and folded down to the open frame to be secured in suitable manner.
In the drawing, A represents the open frame of a common shutter, which is hinged to the window-casing, and secured in open or closed position in the customary manner. A shutter, B, with adjustable slats, is hinged to the top part of the frame A, its outer frame," being either of equal size therewith, or itted within the open frame A, as found most convenient. Centrally hinged metallic braces C are provided to frame A and shutter B for admitting the swinging and supporting of the shutter in au outwardly-inclined direction, as shown in Fig. l.
rllhe shutter serves in .this position the purpose of an awnvipg, byadmittingtlie freecir culatiolof air, while producing at the vsame time a protection against the sun.
By folding up the hinged brace-rods C, the shutter may be swung back to frame A, the folding braces being stored away in grooves or recesses a of the frame A and shutter B.l
The shutter B7isl'Qcked in vertical position t0 frame A 4by means of fastening-screws, spring-catches,or other suitable retaining devices b, serving in this position all the purposes of the common shutter.
The great convenience and advantage of this shutter, together with the smallextra expense of the same, will recommend it readily for building purposes.
To retain the main frame securely 0n its hinges a ring is screwed over the sleeve on the top or head of the pintle to prevent the lifting out of the shutters in stormy wea-ther.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.-
The combination, with side-hinged frame A, and top-hinged shutter B, of the braces C C, middle-jointed, and folding into recess a of frame, as and for the purpose specified.
SOFIE VICTOR. Witnesses:
