IMPROVEMENT IN LOOM-TEMPLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,785, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. THIOKINs, of Washington Mills, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loom-Temple, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement in loom-temples consists of a drum and ratchet contrivance for the weighted cord, so arranged that when the cord is unhooked to shift it along the cloth the ratchet supports the weight, and thus relieves the operator from the labor of holding it. After hooking on the cord again the ratchet-lever is raised by the operator to let the weight strain the cloth.
7 Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved loom-temple, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.

A is the cord, for booking onto the edge of the cloth, and B the weight for applying the tension. This cord I propose to coil around a drum, (J, suitably supported by a bracket, D, attached to the loom-frame, and having a ratchet, E, and pivoted detent-pawl lever F, so contrived that they hold the weight against falling down, but allow it to rise freely by the cloth, so that when the operator unhooks the cord to shift it along he does not have to hold the weight, which, being generally thirty to forty pounds, requires considerable effort, which, by this contrivance, is wholly avoided.
The cord A is coiled about the drum 0 a sufficient number of times to prevent it from slipping upon the drum, and the weight, therefore, cannot descend without turning the drum, which is held firmly when the pawl lever catches in the ratchet-wheel. The weightis thus held, when no tension is required, by the pawl, and without manual exertion. When the cord is readjusted the weight is let fall a gain, to apply the tension, by lifting the lever.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The ratchet E and lever F, combined with the cord and weight of a loom-temple, all arranged to hold the weight in place when the cord A is detached from the cloth, substantially as specified.
