My invention relates to door locks, and it has for a purpose the provision of a lock which greatly simplifies the structure and manufacturing cost of previous locks of this character; a lock having a latch bolt which .is capable of actuation from either side of a door and provided with a looking member operable from the inner side of the door and independently of the inner knob to prevent actuation by the outer knob; and a key actuated element for operating the latch bolt from the outer side of the door even when the locking member is in looking position.
Another purpose of my invention is the provision of a door lock of the above described character which is designed to permit of its adaptation to either a right or left hand door without structural modification, and in either adaptation only requiring slight modification of the door to apply the look.
It is also a purpose of my invention to provide a lock for inside or communicating doors having locking members operable from either side of the door to prevent operation of the latch bolt by the knob at the opposite side of the door.
I will describe only two forms of door locks embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the several views. Referring to the drawings, my invention n its present embodiment comprises a housmg including an annulus 15 to which is welded or otherwise secured to a side plate 16, a second side plate 17 being detachablv secured to the annulus in order to permit access to the interior of the housin This housing in the applied position 0 a lock to a-oloor is disposed within a circular openng bored transversely through the door and in communication with a radial opening 19 through which a latch bolt 20 is adapted to extend. The bolt in turn is movable in a sleeve 21 in the opening 19, the inner end of the sleeve being closed by a plate 22 provided with an opening through which a stem 23 of the bolt extends. A spring 24 is interposed between the latch bolt and the plate 22 for yieldably urging the bolt outwardly into engagement with a keeper plate 25 on the door frame 26. The inner end of the stem 23 is provided with a head 27 which confines the stem within the slot 28 of a retractor generally indicated at R andto thereby provide an operative connection between the retractor and latch bolt.
This retractor is movable in the lock housing to permit movement of the latch bolt to projected position and to be actuated to efi'ect movement of the latch bolt to retracted position, the retractor being guided in its movements by guide plates 29 riveted to the inner side of the plate 16 and each constructed in the manner illustrated in Fig. 7.
The retractor is aided in its movement in one direction, or that direction in which the bolt 20 moves to projected position, by a spring'30 positioned as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 and engaging a portion 31 of the retractor curved for the purpose of permitting the necessary movement of the retractor in respect to the actuators of the lock.
The annulus 15 is slotted to provide an opening 32 through which the stem 23 of the latch bolt 20 is adapted to extend. This annulus is also provided at diametrically opposed points with slots 33 and the plate 17 is provided with openings 34 at diametrically opposed points. The purpose of these slots and openings will be described hereinafter. Axially the plates 16 and 17 are provided with openings through which extend sections 35 and 36 of a divided spindle, the sectionsbeing connected to each other by means of a threaded stud 37 engaging within a threaded socket 38 at the confronting ends of the sections. This connection is such as to permit inde endent rotation of the spindle sections wit out actually disconnecting the sections. 5 The are of angular cross-section and provide at their outer ends with knobs 35? and 36, respectively, by which the spindles can be manually operated from opposite sides of the door. As is usual, the knobs are rotatable in escutcheon plates 39 and 40, respectively, secured to opposite sides of the door in covering relation to the ends of the door opening 18. The plate 39 is provided with bosses 41 in which screws 42 are threaded for securing the housing to the plate. The bosses serve to properly space the housing from the plate 39 and the screws, 42 are of such length as to be extendable through the cover plate 17. The-plate 40 is likewise secured to the plate 17 by screws 40.
Normally, either of the spindle sections 35 and 36 is capable of actuating the retractor R to retract the latch bolt 20 to permit opening of the door, and to provide operative connections between the spindle sections and the retractor two actuators, one for each of the spindle sections, is provided. The actuator for the spindle section 36 comprises a hub member 43 having an angular bore corresponding to the cross-section of the spindle section. This hub member is provided at diametrically opposed points with a pair of radially extending ln s 44 disposed within the retractor It so t at according as the spindle section 36 is rotated in one direction,
or the other, one lug or the other will engage and move the retractor to a position in whlch retraction of the latch bolt is effected. Themanner in which one lug engages the retractor in moving the latch bolt to retracted position is illustrated in Fig. 3. v The actuator for the spindle section 3 likewise comprises a hub member 45 having a non-circular :bore with its inner end in overlapped relation to the adjacent end of the hub member 43, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Lugs 46 extend radially from the hub member 45 at diametrically opposed points, and through actuation of the spindle section 35 either of these lugs can be moved to actuate the retractor in effecting retraction of the latch bolt 20.
The outer ends of the lugs areformed with slots 47 in one of which the finger 48 of a locking bar 49 is adapted to engage to secure the actuator against rotation and. to
thereby prevent retraction of the latch bolt by actuation of the knob 35*. This bar 49 is movable in one of the openings 34, lugs 50 being provided to guide the bar in its movement. The finger 48 when extended into the slot 47 also engages within a groove 51 of one of the plates 29, and'the outer end of the bar is provided with a button 52. disposed exteriorly of the plate 40 to permit manual actuation of the bar as will be understood. The locking position of the bar 49 is shown in Fig. 1, and the release position in'Fig. 5. In this latter position the finger 48 is removed from the groove 51 and the slot 47 so that the actuator can now be operated through manipulation of the knob 35*.
The door to which the lock is applied is an outside door, the knob 35? being at the outer side of the door and the button 52 at the inner side of the door so'that when the locking bar 49 is moved to locking position it is impossible to retract the latch bolt by actuation of the knob 35. However, to permit one to actuate the latch bolt from the outer side of the door when the locking bar is in locking position, I provide an arm or relatively long lug 53 which, as shown in Fig. 1, extends=downwardly through the upper slot 33 for engagement with the retractor B.
This lug '53 is adapted to be operated by the extension of the proper key 54 into a lock barrel 55. By inserting the key into the lock and turning the key 1n a counterclockwise direction, as when viewed in Fig. 2, the lug will be actuated to engage and move the retractor R to a retracted position in which the latch bolt is withdrawn from the keeper plate.
The barrel 55 is threaded in the plate 39,
and a set screw 56 is threaded in a boss 57 at the inner side of the plate 39 to engage the lock. barrel and secure the latter against unscrewing from the plate. This manner of locking the barrel within the plate consti tutes an important feature of my invention as once the lock is secured in position it is impossible to remove the lock without removing the' plate 39. Referring now to Fig. 8, I have here shown another form of door lockembodying my invention which is adapted for use on an inside or communicating door where it is desired tolock the latch bolt against retraction from either side of .the door to prevent actuation of the bolt from the opposite side of the door.
In this embodiment of my invention the lug 53 and its actuating lock may or may not be employed. If employed, the lug is extended through the upper slot 33 as in the first form ofmy invention. In the present instance the plates 16 and 17 of the housing are provided with openings 59 and 60, respectfully, through which extend locking bars 61 and 62 provided with buttons or handles 63 and 64:, respectively, operable from the outer sides of the escutcheon plates 39 and 40. An actuator common to both of the spindle sections 35 and 36 is mounted on the sections and comprises a hub member 65 rovided with a pair of radial lugs 66 and 67 both of which are slotted at their outer ends to receive the respective locking fingers of the bars 61 and 62. When either bar is pushed inwardly to cause its finger to engage within the slot of the corresponding lug the actuator is locked against rotation by either spindle section so that the retractor R cannot actuate the latch bolt. As the locking bars are operable from opposite sides of the door, the movement ofone bar to locking position will prevent operation of the latch bolt by a knob at the other side of the door.
Although I have herein shown and described only two forms of door locks embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changcs'and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

A lock of the character described comprising a housing, a latch carried thereby, a divided spindle having an inner section and an outer section, means on cachspindle section for imparting a reciprocal movement of the latch by operation of the spindle sections, and locking membersreciprocally mounted in the housing and movable into engagement with said means for securing the spindle sections against rotation.
2. A look of the character described comprising a housing having openings in one side thereof at opposed points and slots in the top and bottom thereof, a latch carried by the housing, a divided spindle having inner and outer sections, means on each spindle section for imparting reciprocal movement to the latch by operation of the spindle sections, a locking member extendable into the housing through one of said openings to engage with said means on the outer spindle section for securing the latter against rotation, and'a lock controlled element extendable through one of said slots and movable to actuate the latch independently of either spindle section, and means by which the housing can be supported in two positions to accommodate the lock to a right or left-hand door, said lockin member and element being 'extendable through either of the slots or openings, respectively, according as the housing is supported in one position or the other.

A lockof the character described comprising a housing having openings in one side thereof at opposed points, a latch carried by the housing, a divided spindle having inner and outer sections, means on each spindle section for imparting reciprocal movement to the latch by operation of the spindle sections, a locking member extenda le into the housing through either of said openings to engage with said means on the outer spindle section for securing the latter against rotation, and means by which the housing can be supported in two positions to accommodate the lock to a right or left-hand door.

A lock comprising a housing, a springpressed latch bolt exteriorly of the housing, a retractor for the latch bolt movable in the housing, and yieldably urged in the direction of the latch bolt, a divided spindle rotatable in the housing and extending through the retractor, a pair of sleeves on the two sections of the spindle rotatable in the housing and in the retractor, and a pair of arms on each of the sleeves disposed to engage the retractor to move the latter to retracted position when either of the sleeves is rotated by either of the spindle sections.
5. A lock comprising a housing, a springpressed latch bolt exteriorly of the housing,
a retractor for the latch bolt movable in the housing, and yieldably urged in the direction of the latch bolt, a divided spindle rotatable in the housing and extending through the retractor, a pair of sleeves on the two sections of the spindle rotatable in the housing and in the retractor, a pair of arms on each of the sleeves disposed to engage the retractor to move the latter to retracted position when either of the sleeves is rotated by either of the spindle sections, one pair of arms being relatively long and having openings in the ends thereof, and a locking bar movable in the housing to engage or disengage one of the arms within said opening to lock the corresponding sleeve and spindle section against rotation.
6. A lock comprising a circular housing, guide members in the housing, a retractor within the housing slidable between the guide members, a latch bolt disposed radially of the housing, said latch bolt being yieldably urged to projected position and operatively connected to the retractor, a divided spindle extending through the housing, sleeves fixed on the spindle and rotatable in the retractor, and arms on' the sleeves for actuating the retractor when the sleeves are rotated by means of the spindle.

A lock comprising a circular housing, guide members in the housing, a retractor within the housing slidable between the guide members, a latch bolt disposed radially of the housing, said latch bolt belng yieldably urged to projected POSltlOILflIld operatively connected to the retractor, a d1- vided spindle extending through the housing, sleeves fixed on the splndle and rotatable in the retractor, arms on the sleeves for actuating the retractor when the sleeves are rotated by means of the spindle, certain of said arms having openings therein, grooves in the guide plates, and a locking bar movable -in the housing to engage within the opening of one arm and the corresponding groove of the adjacent plate for locking the corresponding sleeve against rotation.

In a lock of the character described, an escutcheon, a latch bolt, a retractor for the latch bolt within the housing, a divided spindle extending through the housing and I y I e I, I having means thereon for actuating the retractor, a lock on the escutcheon including a barrel threaded in the escutcheon, means adapted to be disposed at? the inner side of the escuteheon when the latter is in applied position to a door for securing. the barrel against unthre'adedmovement, and a member on the .lockoperable thereby to actuate the retractor independently of said means.
9. A lock as embodied in claim 8 wherein the locking means for the barrel comprises a boss on the escutcheon and a screw threaded in the boss to engage the barrel.
10. A lock of the character described comprising a housing, a latch carried thereby, a 40 divided spindle having an inner section and an outer section, means on each spindle section for imparting a reciprocal movement of the latch by operation of the spindle sections, and lock members disposed at oppo-
