GUARD FOR GRINDING WHEELS.
Application filed November The invent-ion relates to a guard 'for emery and other grinding1 wheels.
llt is well lmown'that becauee of the high speed ot' rotation ot grinding wheels, and eepecially emery wheels, the wheel is likely to break or explode and the flying pieces from 'the wheel endanger the operator as the pieces are thrown with great force.
his invention has for its principal object the provision ot a guard to protect the operator from :dying pieces of the grinding wheel should it breal; orexplode, and
that is automatically operated by the con-` tact ot the pieces flying from the wheel to close the guard downwardly and to hold it :in a cloned position to eifeetually Stop the flying of pieces of the wheel in the direction oi' the operator.
rllhe invention has for further object the provision oit a guard comprising a tlexible upright which ia adjuetably mounted in an angular extension that is arranged over the upper part of the grinding wheel, the angular extension being` adapted to be moved by impact of flying pieces of the wheel therewith downwardly by bending the ilexible upright, a latch member being also provided to engage the angular extension when moved downwardly and hold it in such position to protect the operator.
rthe invention will be described in det-ail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the aceenipai'iying drawings in which Figure l. is; a eide view in elevation of the imyn'oved guard Showing it in relation with the grinding wheel,
Figure il is a liront view in elevation,
Figure 3, a top plan view,
Figure et, a. horizontal sectional View on a plane indicated by the line li-l of Figure l, and i Figure 5 a vertical sentienal view on a plane indicated by the line 5-5 of F igure l.
liu the drawings Similar reference char* actors will be uned to designate corresponding parte tiroughout the several views.
rlllie improved guard for grinding wheels ie Shown applied to a base l, that may be a worlr bench or any other suitable support, and comprises a base member 2 Secured to said base l by means of a bolt 3, and is provided with an upright 'flexible Support fl haring' a horizontally extending arm 5 provided with a longitudinal slot 6, 7 indi- 3, 1927. Serial No. 230,848.
cartes an angular member adjuetably sup ported by the horizontal arm 5 by means oi a bolt 8 engaging through slet G, and including a. downturned end S). Horizontal arms 5 and angular member 7 are adapted to be arranged above ,the upper part of an emery or grinding wheel suggested at A, and the angular member is secured in adjusted position by means ot adjusting bolts l0 arranged oni either side ol' the grinding wheel A. A tooth or projection ll is secured to the inner side of the portion 9 adjacent to its lower end.
When the emery wheel A is in use and the worlr is being supported on a `:suitable work holder that is positioned at B, it willbe understood that any pieces of the emery or other grinding wheel A that may be thrown tangentially of the upper side of the wheel will be intercepted by the angular member 7 and the downturned portion 9 and tooth 1l and the angular member will be driven `foiwardly and downwardly into the position Shown in broken linee` in Figure l, the support l. flexing or bending to permit such movement, and the operator standing at the work bench will be protected from the flying'pieces of the wheel.
In order to drop the guard into the pooition described, and as shown in broken lines; in Figure l, a latch member is provided comprising a flexible upright member l2 having an inturned projection 13 that engages the angular member when in dotted line position. Upright member l2 is pio vided with an upwardly and outwardly inclined portion 14. and its extremity inturned as shown at l5, said inclined portion 11i being engaged by the angular member 7 when moved downwardly by the flying pieces of the emery or other grinding wheel to 'lien the member l2 to insure engagement of the inturned portion l therewitln while the inturned portion l5 Serves ae a stop to limit the upward movement et the arm 5 and angular member 7. i
By having the angular member 7 adjustably secured to the arm 5 it will be apparent that Said angular member may be arranged to guard wheels of varying diameters and to accommodate the guard to the grinding wheel as it is Worn down by use.
A guard for the lower portion of the wheel is also provided and comprises a right angled member 1 6 having its bane 1,7 prollil videdwith a longitudinal slot 18 that is engaged by one of the bolts 3. i
What is claimed is 1. A'guard for grinding wheels, comprising a flexible support, an angular member carried by said support and adapted to be arranged over a grinding wheel and to be engaged by pieces `from thewheel and thereby move the member downwardly by bending the support, and means to hold the memberin lowered position.
2. A guard for grinding wheels, comprising a flexible support, an Vangular member adjustably engaging said support and adapted to be arranged over a grinding wheel and to be engaged by pieces flying from the Wheel and thereby moved downwardly by bending the support, and means to hold the member in lowered position.
3. A guard for grinding wheels, comprising a fiexible support, a slotted arm extending from the support, an angular member carried by said arm and adjustable in the Y vslot therein, jsaid arm and member being adapted to be arranged over a grinding wheelV and to be engaged by pieces fiying therefrom and thereby moved downwardly by bending the support, and means to hold the member and arm in lowered position.
4. A guard for grinding wheels, comprisving a flexible support, an angular member carried by said'support and adapted to be arranged over a grinding wheel, a projection on said member adapted to be engaged by pieces flying from the wheen and move 1 the member downwardly by bending the support, and means to hold the member and arm in lowered position.
5. A guard for grinding wheels, comprising` a flexible support, an angular member carried by said support and adapted to be arranged lover a grinding wheel and lo be Ybe arranged over a. grinding wheel and to be engaged by pieces flying therefrom and thereby moved downwardly by bending the support, a flexible latch member associated therewith and provided with a projection to engage said member and hold it in lowered position and the other of said uprights being adjustable on the base.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
