Description

. duceV the Weight to'be handled while positioningthe base andreame-r with relation to the cylinder tobe toperated upon.l AThe base 1 vmaybe attached ,directly to the` engine block or other structure in such a posit-ion that the cutter head aligns with the longitudinalaxis of thecylinder. Vhen the base has been so.attached,'the' jacket 16 may be placed Yover, the shaft 6 and its lug 18 engaged with the pin Y under the stop 19. The-third partcomprising the gearcase 32 and shaft may new be connected kto the partsalready assembled by'telescoping the instance a smallA electric motor. `tion of the shaft 23 will be communicated "shaft 30jwith the vsocket 9 and revolving until thelug 311 abuts against stop 22.
When the partszhave been connected as above described, power may be applied to the shaft`23 by any suit-able means, as for The motothe shaft 30Y through the reduction-gear- A ing previously described. The *shaftv 30 o'jfeeding-out 'or'downward projection of the through its key way 31 and the key .15 will revolve the'shaft 6 and so turn the cutter head 7. 'Y As'has beenl stated', when the shaft O'isinsertedinto lthe socket 9 the threaded portions ofthe membersll'are'foreed outwardly into engagement with the threads on the inside of jacket 16, as best shown in Figures 1 and'. Since the jacket 16 secured against rotary and longitudinal movement by'reason of the engagement of its lug 18 with the-pin 20, it results that Vthe shaft 6, when-rotated by shaft 30, will. also be I advanced' downwardly YtoA thrust the cutter head further intothe cylinder as the cutting Y or boring. progresses.` The threads 14-'on`the fmembers lland the cooperating threads on the inside-of the jacket 16 are -such that the cutter head 7v progresses at a rate suitably [proportioned\to1`the-rate ofculting of the cutters V8. Thereboring of a cylinder-'by my vnovel apparatus may 'be .accomplished "without removing or disconnecting` the en gineb'lockfor 'cylinder from the other parts towhich it may be connected and so'obviates thenecessity'for these 'laborious' and costly operationslJuWh'en the boringer roaming has been vcompleted the `various parts'of the apparatus maybe disassembled'and removed to another fcylinder. Y
UFrm the preceding description,- 'it' will 'ibe'fo'bvious that'l havei'rprovided a simple, compact-andlportable apparatus for the purpose set forth, which has a minimum number of parts and is substantially constructed. lt will, furthermore, be obvious that l have provided an extremely simple and positive device for advancing the cutter head into the cylinder as the boring or reanling progresses.
Claims:
1. Roaming or boring apparatus comprising in combination, a cutter head, a shaft connected to said cutter head, an internally threaded sleeve surrounding said shaft and means carried by said shaft and adapted to be expanded into engagement with the threads on said sleeve.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular tool carrying shaft, driving means adapted to telescope With said shaft and means rendered operative by the telescoping of said driving means and shaft for projecting said sha-ft longitudinally.
3. In a device ,of the class described, the combination of a tool carrying shaft, an internally threaded sleeve enclosing said shaft, threaded means mounted in slots in said shaft and driving means adapted to move said threaded means into engagement with the threads in-said sleeve.
L1-. 'In a reaming and boring apparatus, the combination of a tool carrying shaft, an internally threaded sleeve enclosing said shaft, threaded means carried by said shaft and driving means adapted tol cooperate with said shaft, said driving means being effective to move said threaded means into engagement with the lthreads in said sleeve.
5. Cylinder reboring apparatus comprising a tool carrying shaft, threaded members carried by said shaft, an internally threaded sleeve surrounding said shaft and drive means adapted to eooj'ierate with said shaft, said drive means heilig adapted to revolve said shaft and to force said threaded members into engagement with the threads on said sleeve whereby said shaft will be moved longitudinally as it is revolved.
6. AV reaming. or 'boring apparatus coinprising a shaft having a hollow portion, slots in said shaft, a cutter head mounted upon the end of said shaft that is remote from said hollow portion, threaded collapsible and expansible members mounted in said sl.ots,an internally threaded sleeve surrounding said shaft and a` shaft adapted to be projected within the hollow portion otsaid first named shaft to move said collapsible and expansible members into`engage'ment with'said sleeve and means `for revolving said first named shaft.
7. ln a reaming and boring apparatus, the combination of a driveny shaft, a cutter head carried by said driven shaft, a driving shaft adapted to cooperate with said driven shaft, and collapsible and cxpansible means for connecting -said shafts, said collapsible and expansible means being rendered ef feetive by the cooperative positioning oi said shafts :for moving said driven Shaft along its longitudinal axis.
S. In a reaming o1' boring apparatus7 a driven shaft having a hollow portion, a cutter head Carried by said driven shaft, slots in said shaft, collapsible and expe-lisible member@` mounted within said slots, a sleeve Surrounding said Shaft and a drive :shaft l0 adapted to be projected into said first named shaft to move saidv collapsible and expansible members into operative relation with said sleeve to connect said shafts.
In testimony whereof I hereby aiiX my l5` Signature.
