UNITED STATES ROBERT W. RYDER, OF SAN FRANCISCO,
CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SANTA CRUZ PORTLAND CEMENT COMPANY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
CEMENT KILN .IND FEEDER CONTROL.
Application filed November 24, 1925. Serial No. 71,089.
This invention relates to rotary kilns in general and feeders therefor, and in particular to raw mix feeders in combination with tubular cement calcining kilns.
The principal objects of the invention are to effect a cooperating control of feeder speed and kiln rotation providing for relative variations when desired and all operated from one point, preferably near the discharge end of the kiln.
Other objects lie in the arrangements and details of the elements through which the desired control is obtained.
In the drawings herewith an embodiment of my invention is shown, the figure being a side elevation of the complete installation and diagrammatic showing of the electrical connections.
The figure shows a tubular rotary cement kiln 1 supported on roller bearings 2 and driven through means of a ring gear 3 and pinion 3 in the usual way.
At 4 is shown the hopper from the raw mix bin discharging into a feeder box 5 for feeding by means of a spiral conveyor 6 through the dust chamber 7 at the base of the stack 8 and into the kiln 1.
The particular feeder here'shown is more completely described and shown in my Patent No. 1,628,197, granted May 10, 1927, but
its use in the present combination is only illustrative as any type of positive feeder may be used with the improved control of which this application treats.
The feeder is operated by a variable speed motor 9 through the intermediary of .a speed or gear reduction 10, and the kiln is similarly operated by another variable speed motor 11 through any suitable speed or gear reduction as at 12. v
The power circuits to dicated and the variable speed or armature leads are shown respectively extended to individual controller boxes 13 and 14 situated adjacent the discharge end of the kiln, while the ower leads to each motor are shown provided with no-voltage or overload cutout switches '15 and 16 having a trip connection 17 to insure one switch opening upon the opening of the other, thus if the feeder stops for any cause the kiln will'also stop.
The controller boxes are geared together so that upon operation of. the hand lever 18 on one box both boxes will be operated to these motors are instart, increase or decrease the speed of both feeder and kiln.
In the drawing the gear connection between the rotating shaft of the boxes is shown as consisting of sprockets 19 and 20 and chain 21, and in the initial adjusting of the chain and sprockets the relative speed of the feeder to the rotations ofthe kiln may be determined either through the rotative positions or setting of the sprockets, or their relative size as it is evident that one may be larger than the other so that either the feeder or the kiln will increase in speed at adiflerent rate than the other, tho it is also contemplated that the sprockets be outermost in their position on the boxes for easy changing from their shafts to any other size which occasion may require.
In addition to the provision for varying the control relation through different size sprockets provision is made for bodily r0- tating one of the controller boxes on itsaxis so as to advance or retard its electrical contacts with respect tothe other box.
This is shown in the drawing, box 13 being ri idly secured in place while box 14 is rot-ata 1y mounted on its own shaft supported by hearing brackets at both ends as indicated at one end at 22.
The bearing brackets are fixedly secured in place and the shell of the box 14 is provided with an arm 23 extending over a quadrant 24 carried by the brackets and locking by suitable means at various points along the quadrant, such for instance as thepin 25 passing through the arm into any of the holes 26 in the quadrant.
Thus the box 14 may be revolved around its shaft to the limit of the quadrant provisions and locked at any point desired.
The operating controller bar or handle 18 while shown on box 13 may of course be on,
either box, and while I show but two controllers geared together in a special way it is obvious without further showing that any number of controllers may be so connected andoperated fromv any of them for operating any numberof feeders and kilns.
I claim:
1. In combination with a revolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, a variable s eed electric motor arranged to drive the kllll and a second variable speed electric motor arranged to drive the feeder, electrical circuits including a separate controller box for each motor, said controller boxes being equipped with fixed contact parts and movable contact parts and mechanical means connecting the moving contact parts of the controller boxes to effect simultaneous operation of the same.
2. In combination with a revolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, a variable speed electric motor arranged to drive the kiln and a second variable speed electric motor arranged to drive the feeder, electrical circuits including a separate control- ,ler box for each motor, said controller boxes being equipped with fixed contact parts and movable contact parts, mechanical means connecting the moving'contact parts of the controller boxes to effect simultaneous operation of the same and means for advancing the position of fixed contacts in one box relative to the fixed contact in otherbox.
3. In combination with a revolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, a variable speed electric motor arranged to drive the kiln and a second variable speed electric motor arranged to drive the feeder, electrical circuits including a separate controller box for each motor, said controller boxes being equipped with fixed contact parts and movable contact parts, mechanical means connecting the moving contact parts of the controller boxes to effect simultaneous operation of the same, one of said boxes being bodily mounted for movement of the fixed contact part relative to its moving counterart.
p 4. In combination with a revolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, an electric motor arranged for driving the kiln and atripping means provided in 'each switch,
connected by said circuit.
5. In combination with a revolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, an electric motor arranged for driving the kiln and a second electric motor arranged for driving the feeder, electrical circuits for the motors including a separate overload cut-out switch for each motor, an electric circuit from one switch to the other and electrical tripping means provided in each'switch, connected by said circuit whereby one'switch will open upon the opening of the other and separate controller boxes for the motors mechanically connected for simultaneous operation.
a 6. The combination with arevolvable kiln and a material feeder therefor, of an' electric motor arranged for driving the kiln and a second electric motor arranged for driving the feeder, electric circuits for the motors including a separate overload cut-out switch for each motor, an electric circuit between the switches to effect simultaneous operation of the same, and separate controller boxes for the motors, said controller boxes being equipped with fixed contact parts and movable contact parts, one of said boxes being mounted for bodily movement of its fixed contact part to advance or retard its posiiton on its movable counterpart and mechanical means connecting the movable counterparts of said controller boxes.
