Application area March so, 192e.Y serial No. 266,031.
This invention relates to superheaters adapted for vuse within. lire places, `open hearths etci, embodying among other' characteristics a battle 'plate' adapted topdeiieet heat therei'iron'i and within the room which is ordinarily drawnup through the chimney flue.
hends a damper plate operable in conjunction with the baille plate'to ,open and close thc flue in the 'superheater and to provide an extension for the baiile plate to deflect more ct the heat when the lire burns low.
A further object of the invention conteniplates a smoke chamber provided within the upper portion of the superheater and extended at rightanglesl 'from the heater per se, whereby the smoke when drawn against the top of the superheater will deflect the heat therein downwardly against the damper and baiile plate through the heating compartment and into the room.
More specifically stated, the damper plate is provided with control members extended through a face plate for the heater.
With the above and other objects in view,
ing novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings y Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention as applied within a lire place.
Figure 2 is a iront elevation of the inveir tion with the cover plate and damper control removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure l is a sectional View taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the superheater per se. i
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of :reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates an elongated boX like housing preferably composed of castiron or sheet metal and which is vprovided with a cover plate 11 upon the outer portion thereof, the face plate being ot any ornamental design.
A baiile plate 12, horizontally disposed upon the rear wall 13 of the housing 1() and extending lthe entire length of the housing therein, is retained in the position shown against warping incident to contraction and Another object of the invention compreV expansion through the instrumentality of a brace member 111. Y
Fins 15, inwardly projected from the inner sides of-end walls torthe housing, are disposed in spacedrelation to'and above the battle plate 12. A damper plate 16 slidahly mounted upon the upper side ott the baille plate 12 is retained in position by the finsl.
Ears 17, upstanding from theforward side edge of the damper plate 16 are apertured and tapped to accommodate kthe innermost threaded ends of rod members 18 having pivotal connection, as indicated at 19 with damper pulls or levers 20. The latter 'are adapted to depend m the positions shown in Figure 1 of the drawings when the damper .has been fully closed, whereas the levers or it will thus be noted that compartments 21 and 22 are defined within the housing 10. The compartment 21, by reason of the fact that the same is the lowermost of the compartments, will initially receive the heat and smoke from thel lire within the -iire place. Said compartment having the upperwall thereof composed of the baille plate 12 and damper plate 16 will obviously deflect a great quantity ot heat downwardy through the compartment and within the room. Such heat Vwould be ordinarily lost and drawn up through the chimney flue. The compartment 22 is in the nature of a combination heat and smoke collecting chamber, which will absorb the heat and radiate the same through the cover plate lljrather than allow the same to 23 is adapted to repose upon thev upper ledge of an auxiliary wall 25, preferably composed vot tire brick or other lire resisting material,
whereby the entire superheater device may lie flush withv the face of the fireplace and to effectively radiate heat therefrom within the room.
The inventionv is susceptible of various changes in itsv form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to malte such changes as .properly fall Withinthe scope O the appended claim.
Having described claimed is r- The combination with a inantel {irepiace having a rear Wall and an opening through said Weil tov provide communication with the tirepiace iue, of a heater comprising@ housvring` positioned Within the irepluce With the iront Wai] of; the housing/flush with the front Well of said ireplace, said .housing having an opening in its bottoni `adjacent its front wail for the entrance ofproducts of conibus tion, a partition`extendinghorizontally Withinth'e housingl 'from the rear Wald thereof and having its front edge spaced from the front Wall of the housing, said partition providing the invention, what is hollow extension project-,ing` from the Vroer* of land connnunicutino' *with the upper coinpartncent and having its top and bottom vWalls closely engaging the top and bottom Walls of the opening in the rear wail of the fireplace,
