This invention relates to sofa-beds and has for its principal object, to produce a strong and durable light weight sofa-bed which is 'readily convertedfor use as a bed or" couch or divan "and will not accidentally close when opened'as a bed. Otherprincipal objects are to provide for simplicity and eheapness of construction of such device, to

The sofa-bed shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a rigid sofa frame "A and foldingfbedframes or'sectionsB and C, said [frames Ibeingpreferably. composed of angle irons. The sofa'fra'r'ne A comprises four" legs or'corner posts '5 mounted on casters6 and'suitably connected by side rails 7 end rails 8. The sofa frame is provided at'i ts corners with diagonal braces 9 which I constitute supports for'the folding section or frame C in the closed position thereof.

In the unfolded or opened position of the sofa-bed, as shown inFig. 2, the bed frames B and C are disposed in'substantially the same horizontal planeand cooperate to form the bed, bottom. the folded or closed position of the sofa-bed, as shown in Fig. 4, the outer bed frame 3 forms the seat portion ofthe sofa-bed and the inner bed'frame'C isflfolded'ben'eath said outersection B. and forms a support for bed accessories, such as mattresses, pillows'and'bed clothing.

Each of the folding frames B and C are provided with a spring bottom consisting of verticaliy disposed coll springs 10, preferwhich ably of'conical form, that are supported in spaced relation by a-wire fabric 11 connected to the side and end rails of each frame. A mattress 12 covers the frames B and C in the unfolded or bed positions thereof. In the folded-or closed position of the sofa-bed,

the outer portion of the mattress 12 is fold ed upon the inner portion thereof and the entire mattress is supported on the inner frame C and is thus concealed below the out' er frame B, which forms the seatpo'rtionof the sofa-bed.

The inner bed frame C isalso connected f at each end to-the adjacent ends of the sofa frame by a pair of parallel links 20. These parallel supporting links have pivotal, connections at their upper ends with the rear end portions of the end rails ofthe inner bed frameC; and the lower ends of said links are pivotally secured to the lowermost end rails of the sofa frame A at points adjacent to the lowermost pivots for the parallel links 14 that connect the outer frame- B to said sofa frame. The pivots of each pair of parallel links 20 are equidistant and the inner frame C- will therefore be in a horizontal position in all positions of its swinging movement. The rearmostlinks of the pairs of supporting links 20 have angularextensions 21 provided at their. free ends with horizontal extending pins 22 adapted to be engaged by the inner links of the pairs 14 during the unfolding of opening movethe front edges of the rearmost links of the ment'of the outer bed frame B and thus cause the links 20 to swing upwardly and raise the inner bed frame C to bed position. The pins 22 on the angular extensions 21 of thetrear links of the pairs'20 bear against pairs 14 during the folding or closing movement of the bed frames and thus permit the inner bed frame C to return to its folded position gradually and without jar. Braces 23 extend across the angle formed by the extensions 21 of the links 20 and thus serve to brace and stiffen the same. Said braces also serve to keep the links 21 in line-with vent swinging movement of the frame C. The latch arms 21 extend forwardly beyond the sofa frame A and are adapted to be released, at the beginning of the closing movement of the outer frame B, by means of pins 26 secured to the front links of the pairs bf links 14 that pivotally support the odter frame B. v The device may be easilyjopened to'bed position, as shown in Fig. 2, by grasping the outer bed frame B and drawing the same forwardly out of the stationary sofa frame allel link connections 14 with the sofa fli nie A, carried forward in a'horizontal v Aggy? The outer frame B, by re s (if its position until the inner links of the pairs 14 abut against the pins 22 on the angular extensions 21 of the rearmost links of the pairs 20 and cause the same to swing upwardly and raise the inner bed frame C to bed position. In this position of the inner bed frame C, the notches in the latch arms 23 straddle the upper edge of the sofa'frame and thus prevent accidental closingmovement of the bed frame. The inner section is unlocked by raising the outer frame B on its supporting links 14, which action causes the pins 26 to engage the forward ends of the latch arms and thus cause saidarms to become disengaged from the sofa frame; whereupon the inner section gradually returns to its folded position by reason of the engagement between. the pins 22 and the supporting links 14 for the outer section B.

It is noted that the hereinbefore described arrangement provides ample space between the folded frames Band C for the stowage of the folded mattress 12 and other bed accessories and for accommodating the coil spring bottoms 19, which require more space than is ordinarily providedbetween the folded bed sections of sofa-beds. It is also noted that the folding bed frames separate quickly at the beginning of their opening and closing movements, and thereby prevent snagging of the bed accessories by said frames.

Obviously, the hereinbefore described device admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention;-

therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise arrangements shown anddescribed.

What I claim is:

l. A sofa-bed comprising a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat section, horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sec- .tions and said sofa frame, whereby said sections, are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom and remain in a substantially horizontal position in all positions of their swinging movement, and a latch arm secured to one of .the supporting links for said inner section and adapted to cooperate with said sofa frame to hold said inner section in bed position.

2. A sofa-bed comprisin a seat section and an inner section below a sofa frame,

said seat section, horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sect ons and said sofa frame,'whereby said sections are adaptedto be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom and remain in a substantially horizontal position in all positions of their swinging movement, and a latch arm secured to one of the supporting links for said inner section and adapted to. cooperate, with said sofa frame to hold said inner section inbed position, said latch arm being adapted tovbe disengaged from said'sofa frame by one of the supporting links forsaid seat section during the return thereof to seat position.

A sofa-bed comprising'a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat. section, separate pairs of horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofa frame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom, and a locking device movable with-said-inner section and adapted to cooperatewvith said sofa frame to hold said inner section in bed position, said locking device being adapted to be disengaged from said sofa frame by one of the supporting links for said seat section during the movement thereof to seat position.

4Q A sofa-bed comprising a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat section, separate pairs of horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofa frame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom, a locking device movable with said inner section and adapted to cooperate with said sofa frame to hold said inner section in bed position, and means operated by the movement of said-seat section to seat position for disengaging said locking device from said'sofa frame. .5. A sofa-bed comprising a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat section, and horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofa frame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the .bed bottom, one of the links for the inner section having an extension adapted during the opening movement of said sea-t section to be engaged by one of the link connections therefor to cause said inner section to move to bed position.

6. A sofa-bed comprising a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat section, horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofa frame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom, the link connections between said inner section and said sofa frame having portionsadapted during the opening movement of said seat section to be engaged by the link connections.

A sofa-bed comprising a sofa frame, a seat section and an inner section below said seat section, horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofa frame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung intothe same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom, the link connections between the inner section and the sofa frame having portions adapted during the opening movement of said seat section to be engaged by the link connections between the seat section and said sofa frame to move said inner section to bed position, means carried by one of the Links for the inner section for locking said section in bed position, and means whereby one of the links for the seat section is adapted to release said lockingmeans during the return of said seat section to its closed position.

8.' A sofa-bed comprising a sofa-frame, a seat section and an innersection below said seat section, and separate pairs of horizontally pivoted parallel link connections between each of said sections and said sofafr'ame, whereby said sections are adapted to be swung into the same horizontal plane to form the bed bottom, one of the supporting links for the inner section having an extension radapted during the opening'movement of said seat section to be engaged by one of the supporting links for said seat section to cause said inner section to move to bed position, the extension of the supporting link for said inner section being shaped and arranged so that the inner section is caused to start its movement to bed position after the scat section has completed the greater portion of its movement to bed position and said inner section is caused to return to its folded position before said seat section reaches its folded position.
