BELT OR STRAP AND METHOD OF FORMING THE SAME Filed June 7, 1928 INVENTOR [9419011. 1% 7511010111 5.5.2: ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 19, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILSON J". TALLMAN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGN'OR TO HICKOK MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, INC OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
, Application filed June 7,
The present invention relates to belts or straps and a method of forming the same, and an object thereof is to provide a method of forming a shaped, end or ends on that type of belt or strap employing a central core and a surrounding covering. Another ob ect of the invention is to provide a belt having a one piece covering for a core which has a reduced end, the covering being stitched about the reduced end.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features bemg pointed out 1 in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view of one face of a strap or belt before its ends are formed; I
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through said -strap or belt;
Fig. 3 shows the core'coverlng opened at the ends of the strap orbelt to expose the core F i g. 4 shows the strap or belt with the covering opened and the ends of the core reduced;
Fig. 5 shows a strap or belt with the covering replaced on the reduced ends;
Fig. 6 shows the strap or belt after the covao ering has been molded about the reduced ends Fig.7 shows the strap or belt after the surplus covering at the ends of the belts has been removed and stitching has been passed through the covering in proximity to the reduced ends; and
, I Fig. 8'is an edge View of the strap or belt after it has been formed, as shown in Fig. 7.
Straps or belts have heretofore been made having a central web or core formed of various materials and covered by a covering 2 of any suitable materialadhesively secured to the web 1, the meeting edges 3 of the covering, in this instance, being illustrated at the center line on one side-of the strap or belt. These straps or belts are usually coveredby machinery, the web and the covering being formed from strips of uniform widths, so that when removed from the covering lnachine, the strap or belt has uniform width throughout its length. i
It is desirable, in some instances, however, to form ends on these straps or belts which will vary in contour and be reduced with reference to the general width of the belt or.

strap. The cuttting of such ends of the strap or belt to the desired contour-will, however, leave the edges of the core or Web exposed.
According to this invention, reduced and shaped ends on covered straps or belts of the class described, are obtained without providing exposed edges of the core or web in I the finished piece.
In carrying out this invention, the covered strip, such as shown in Fig. 1, has the end portion of the covering 2 opened at 4 to expose the web or core 1 adjacent one or both ends of the belt or strap, the adhesive preferably being softened by the application of a solvent, heat or otherwise, to permit the separation of the covering from the web or core. The next step is to shape the core to the desired form as shown in Fig. 4 by providing re-.
neously with this stitching, or later, the covering may be trimmed beyond the stitches as at 7 to remove the surplus covering material. The edges of the cut covering may now be coldied and polished.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of shaping an end of a belt or strap having a core and .a covering adhesively secured thereover which comprises separating the covering from the core adjacent the end to be shaped, shaping the core to the desired form, adhesively securing the covering over the shaped core end, stitching the covering closely about the core, and removing the surplus covering material about the shaped end.
2. The method of shaping the end of a belt or strap having a core and a covering adhesively secured thereover which comprises separating the covering from the core adjacent the end to be shaped, shaping the core to covering closely about the core and removing the I surplus covering material beyond the stitching. K
3. A strap or belt comprising a core of uni- 5 form width having at least one of its ends reduced in Width, a one piece covering extending about the core and having its edges meetlng on one side of the core, and a stitching connecting those portions of the covering surm rounding. the reduced end. 7
4:. The method of shaping an end of abelt or strap having a core and a covering secured thereover which comprises separating the covering from the core adjacent the end to be formed shaping the core to the desired design, replacing the covering over the Core, securing the covering on the designed end and removing the surplus covering material about the design. 1
