Description
I'. H Al-N- WHEEL-HUB.
Patented Now-30,1375.
UNITED STATES JOHN HYMAN, OF BELVIDERE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO ALMON WARNER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEEL-HUBS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 170.566, dated November 30, 1875; application filed I October 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HYMAN, of Belvidere, in the county of Warrenand State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hubs for Wheels, of
rwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is an end view of my improved hub, and Fig. 2 is detached perspective views of the component parts of my hub and spoke.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in hubs for wheels; and it consists of an outer and an inner series of wedge-shaped partitions provided or formed, respectively, upon a ring and the wooden portion or box of the hub, alternating with each other, between the outer ones of which are inserted spokes, straddling-the inner ones, which they are caused to embrace, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will describe it.
-In the annexed drawing, A refers to the wooden portion or box-of the hub, in its general outlines of the usual construction, and having a series of tapering or wedge-shaped partitions, c c a, the spaces or sockets a' c a. between which receive the bifurcated ends of the spokes, as will more fully appear hereinafter. B is a metallic'ring or band, the contracted portion of -which adapts it for attachment to the box A, the enlarged portion being provided with a series of inner wedgeshaped partitions, b b b, alternating with the partitions a a a, as shown in Fig. 1, the spaces or sockets betweencthe said partitions b b b receiving the spokes, as alsovshown in the latter-mentioned figure. C C are the spokes, the inner ends of which are bifurcated, or provided with prongs c c. The spokes are inserted through the sockets between the partitions b b b ot' the ring B, so as to cause their bifurcated ends to straddle the inner series of wedgeshaped partitions a a a of the box A.
It will be observed that, when the spokes are driven home into the box or hub A, the pronged or bifnrcated portions c c thereof will yield and approach each other, so as to conform to the shape of and completely'embrace the wedge-shaped partitions a a a of the hub or box A, and thus securely lock the spokes in place.
-Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byl Letters Patent, is-
The wooden hub or' box A, having the wedge-shaped partitions a a a, embraced by the spokes C, in combination with the band B, having the Wedgeshaped partitions b b b, uniting with the partitions c a a in securing the spokes in place, substantially as and for the purpose set fort In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HYMAN.
