UNITED STATES 1,705,171 PATENT OFFICE.
BESSIE AVRON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT.
Application filed October 10, 1927. Serial No. 225,315.
type devoid of elastic widths, panels or gussets, which will permit bending or stretching of the wearer without binding, slipping or substantial strain. 7
According to another object the various advantages of the known modern brassiere and of the known modern bloomer are obtained in the combination garment without sacrifice of convenience, the support of the bloomer-element being accomplished without undue pressure due to thecontraction-of elastic against the abdomen.
Another object is to provide a garment of the above type devoid of buckles, clasps, buttons or straps that are aptto produce the appearance of a bulge when worn under thin or sheer dresses. I
To enable others skilled in the. art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, a drawing depicting a preferredform has been annexed as a part *of this disclosure and in such drawing, similar reference characters denote correspond iug parts throughout all the views, of which,
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved combination undergarment showing the tucks incorporated in the brassiere to shape the same and also the reinforcing strip used in the garment to prevent wrinkling and bulging thereof.
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation of the garment shown in Figure 1, the same 'illustrating how the band pieces of the brassiere are separated from the bloomers to afford free movement to the wearer, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3 -3 of Figure 1 showing how the reinforcing strip is secured across the front of the garment to prevent the same from bulging or wrinkling.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates generally the garment which consists of an upper or brassiere portion 6 which, at its top edge is provided with the hem 7 and suitable shoulder straps 8, through the medium of which the garment is supported on the wearer. The front portion of the brassiere is formedintegrallywith the bloomers 9, the brassiere being narrowed down to provide the band pieces 10 at the back of the garment, which are reinforced as at 11 through the medium of the hem to prevent the material from unravelling. The band pieces are releasably secured together through the mechum of an elastic connector 12 whlch 1s sewn as at 13 to the end of one of the band pieces 10 and carries the eyes 14 which may engage the hooks 15 carried on the-edge of the opposite band piece 10.
In order to shape the brassiere, the same is provided with body encircling tucks 16 which terminate in the bust portion of the brassiere as at 17 and adjacent the upper end of vertically disposed tucks 18, said tucks cooperating 'to shape the brassiere portion and give it the proper fit. The upper edge of'the rear portion of the bloomers is pro.- vided with a fluting 19 in which is held a Suitable elastic member so that the bloomers at the rear of the waist of the wearer fit comfortably and yieldably, it being unnecessary to illustrate the elastic band as the use of such a member is well known for the purpose described. This elastic band is terminated at the end of the fluting and the fluting itself termlnates at the point of connection of the brassiere portion of the garment and the front of the bloomers. Extending across this portion referred to, I have provided a reinforcing strip 20 which is securely sewed as at 21 and is widest in its mid portion'22 so that the garment is not only reinforced at the waist portion but the piece of reinforcing cloth prevents wrinkling at the front of the garment and consequent bulging which is unsightly and spoils the contour of the light outer garments as worn thereover.
In order to provide the necessary fullness at the sides of the bloomer, the darts 23 which are caught under the reinforcing strip and suitably sewn as indicated. The lower side edges of the legs of the bloomer 9 are slit as at 24 and thus provide a leg opening. The bottom of the bloomer legs are fluted as at 25 and gathered to en- 'case an elastic member which is sewn therein I have provided f which begins at a point adjacent. the waist as at 28 and terminates in the crotch portion 29 of the bloomer, the bloomer construction being completed by the sewing 30 at either end of the insert 27, as illustrated.
It will be quite evident, therefore, that I have provided a combination undergarment -which not only allows full freedom during been so objectionable.
It is also evident thatI have provided in a combination undergarment a pair of bloomers which are roomy and which are so constructed that they will snugly fit the wearer zfrnd may be adjusted in the leg size for comort.
In effect the front 6 of the brassiere and the front 9 (Fig. 1) of the bloomer constitute a substantially continuous front panel portion covering the bust and the legs, while the rear or seat section 9 (Fig. 2) is retained at its lateral edges to the outer edges of the leg portion. The term retained as here used and as used in the claims is intended generically to embrace an integral or unitary relation of parts or a connection by seam or equivalentmeans.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to secure by United States Letters Patent is I 1. A ladys combination undergarment comprising a substantially continuous inelastic front panel portion covering the bust and the legs, means unitary with the bust portion for retaining the latter about the body, shoulder straps connecting the top of said bust portion to said means, a seat section permanently retained at the lateral edges of the leg portion, said seat section having an elastic waist strip along the entire, length thereof permanently secured at its ends to the sides of the front portion and constituting the sole means for retaining the seat portion in elevated position.
A ladys combination undergarment comprising a bra-ssierc portion of the type having a pair of band pieces detachably connected at the rear and a pair of shoulder straps, a bloomcr portion having the front section thereof rigidly connected to the lower part of the brassiere and substantially unitary therewith, having the rear portion thereof permanently retained at its lateral edges at the sides of the front section thereof and including an elastic rear waist band portion permanently secured at its ends to the lateral edges of the front section, one of the legs of the bloomer portion affording access from the lower end thereof.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
