IMPROVEMENT INBOWS FOR ANlMAL-POKES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,511, dated November 30, 1875; application filed September 4, 1875.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that ERWIN G. BECKWITH and GEORGE R. BROWN, both of Strongsville, Ouyahoga county, State of Ohio, did invent an Improvement in Bows for Animal- Pokes, of which the following is a specification:

This improvement relates to the bow which encircles the neck of the animal; and consists in cutting the bow in two parts, substantially as shown in drawing accompanying this specification, whereby the bow may be opened conveniently for placing it on the animals neck without the necessity of removing the bowpin, the object being to facilitate placing a poke on the animal, especially if it be a fractions one, which operation with the old method is attended with considerable difficulty, owing to the necessity of removing the bow-pin.

The several parts of the poke are unavoidably detached from one another, and must all be held together carefully in order to reinsert thelpin in securing the poke onto the animals nec c.

To enable others to fully understand this invention, we proceed to describe the same in detail with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the aforesaid improved bow. Fig. 2 is a spring pin or key for holding the bow-pin in place.

A represents an ox-bow, to the pin B of which may be suspended the stale for an animal-poke. The bow A we cut into two parts,

'(the top is found to be most convenient place,)

which parts are united by a hinge, O, enabling one side of said bow to be turned up. D is a key, made of wire, having a small coil bent in the top, and one end bent or curved to meet the otherend, forming a spring-catch.

This key is inserted in a hole in the bow-pin, for retaining it in place.

We do not wish to confine ourselves to the exact construction represented, as'the bow may be divided at some other point and united with a hinge, or it may simply be cut at the top, and each half made to turn on the bowpin, for spreading or opening the same, and have a latch at the top.
