rent is leftl on for prolonged periods the iron becomes overheated thus causing serious damage thereto and frequently starting tires. Even should neither of the aforementioned conditions come about, there 1s always a waste of current which it is desirable to avoid, and to overcome the aforesaid conditions is the primary object of my invention, and to this end the invention resides in the providing of a holder or stand for irons of this type and which embodies means for automotically opening the heating circuit to the iron when the latter is placed upon the stand. n
Other objects are to provide a device of this character, in a manner as hereinafter set forth which will be simple and durable in construction, efficient in operation and mam` ufactured at low cost.
Other objects and ladvantages of my iuvention will appear in t'he following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein :V
iFigure 1 is a plan view of my device with a portion in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sec-tional view thereof taken on line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on' linel 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View of my device showing a modification thereof. In the drawing 1 indicates a metallic base having upturned, inwardly inclined perforated side walls 2 and an end wall Bjsecured thereon. Positioned upon the upper edge of the end wall 3 adjacent portions of the upper edges of side Walls 2 is a panel 4 secured in position in a manner to be presently described. The numeral 5 indicates a depressible platform hingedly secured at one end as at 5 to the adjacent edge of panel 4 and adapted to rest, when depressed by the weight of the iron 5l placed thereon, upon those portions of the edges of the side walls not covered by panel 4, as shown in Figure 2.
' The rear end of the base is provided with supporting legs 6 having giooved head portions on the upper ends thereof and threads on the opposite ends. The legs 6 are passed through registering pairs of openings G in panel 4 and base 1. The heads of the legs Serial N0. 246 ,020.
6 are countersunk in the panel 4 and in connection with the nuts 7, secure the panel 4 .x
in position. The forward end of the base is supported by a leg 8 having' its lower end similar to legs 6, but having the upper end thereof projecting above the top of walls 2 and passing through an opening 9 in the free end of platform 5, the head 10 acting as a stop to limit the upward movement of platform 5 as shown in dotted line in Figure 2. The leg 8 provides a combined guide and stop member for the platform 5. Secured to the underside of the panel 4 is a pair of springs 11 the free ends of which are positioned beneath platform 5 in a manner to exert upward pressure thereon.
Secured to the underside of platform 5 and insulated therefrom by insulating element 12, is a switch blade 13 adapted to coact with switch 14, secured to and insulated from base 1 by insulator 15. 'The rear wall 3 is provided with an opening in which is secured an electric receptacle 16. A detachable plug 17 is inserted in receptacle 16, said plug being provided with conductor wires leading to the iron to be heated. The wall 3 is provided with another opening 18 through which an insulated body 19 carrying circuit connections passes to the interior of the device from a suitable source of supply. One of said connections 20 is attached to switch blade 13, and another 21 is attached to one of the contacts in receptacle 16. Leading from the switch 14 to another contact in the receptacle 16.is a circuit connection 22. Y Y
In Figure 4 Iliave shown a modified form of my device wherein the panel 4 (Figure 8) has been omitted, the platform 5 extending over the entire length of the base and being hingedly connected at its rear end tothe end wall 3. Sprin members 11 are also carried by the end wa l 3 while the legs 6 terminate at a point adjacent the upper face of base 1. Otherwise than that as stated the form shown in Figure 4 is the same as that shownA in the other figures of the drawing.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the electric iron is not resting on platform 5, said platform is raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 by springs 11,v the head 10 serving to limit the upward movement of said platform.
The upward movement of the platform raises switch blade 13 until same contacts with switch 14, thus closing an electric ciri cuit permitting current to flow to the iron to be heated through conductor 20, switch elements 13 and 14, conductorvQQ, to receptacle 16, thence through conventional detachable plug 17 and wires 1'?"` to the iron, the current returning and passing through plug 17, receptacle 16 and conductor.
What I claim is: r

"In a device of the character described a base provided with a switch, end and side walls carried by said base, a stationary panel element mounted on said'end and side walls" and extending over the rear of the latter, a spring controlled depress. ble platform hingedly secured to said panel element and adapted to be seated, when in depressed position, upon that portion of the sidewalls free of the panel element, said platform being provided at -one end with an opening for the passage of a combined guide and stop member therefor, a switch blade car'- ried by said platform and adapted to coact with the 'switch mounted on the base to close a'heating circuit, a plug receiving electric receptacle carried by said end wall, circuit connections between a source of energy, said receptacle and one of said switches, a circuit connection'between the other of said switches and said receptacle. l2. In an iron stand, a base, end and side walls carried by said base, apanel carried by said end and side walls on the upper edge thereof, a forward and a pairof rear supporting legs for and secured to said base, said rear legs being provided with elongated headed Shanks for securing the panel in position, and the forward leg having an elongated headed shank providing a spring controlled platform guide and stop at the forward end of the base.
