FENCE POST. M v
Application AIled July 19,
This invention relates to a fence post and it is an object of the invention to'provide a device of this kind wherein the fence fabric or strands will be readily locked or secured thereto without the` useof staples or kindred fastening elements.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a post of this kind which can be readily produced from metal in a manner wherein the weight of the post is of pronounced lightness, or desirable weight. t
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide a post of this kind constituting an elongated metallic bartogether with a separable point-to facilitate the proper spacing of the post in desired working position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide'a postrof this kind embodying means whereby the same is effectively anchored within the ground and in a manner to materially reduce the liability of the post falling.
rIhe invention consists in the details of construction' and in the combination andar# rangement of the several parts of my improved fence post whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafterbe definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may he the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective of a post constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of the post as illustrated in Figure l, the line of section being taken lengthwise of the post;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of `Figure l;
Figure l is a View inv perspective of the L lower portiony of the retainingslide;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view laken through the upper portion of the post with the fabric holding plate applied.
" As disclosed in the accompanyingdraw# ings, my improved post comprises an elon'- A.gated channel. member VM of requisite dimenf sions and which has each of its side walls l defined an inwardly dispased Hangs 2.
1928. Serial No. 293,988.
The top ofthe pestis adapted to be closed by a. plate 5 riveted, as at 6, for otherwise conv v nected to an arm or plate 7 carried by an end portion of an elongated slide or holding member S. The plate"ru is herein disclosed as at right angles to the elongated member or slide 8. The slide or member Slis of a I,width to bridge thefspace between thejflanges 2 and to overlie the .inner faces of said flanges whenV the slide or member 8 is applied.
The slide or member 8 isv of a length, when the plate or cap 5 is in Contact with the upper end of thelmcmber M', to extend along said member to a point beyond or below the inner? most slots 3 so that thewire strands engaged n within suchv slots will `be effectively held against displacement. AThelower p ortioncof the slide or member 8 is provided with an outwardly and downwardly directed n-eckQ kof a width to freely extend between the inturned n flanges 2, the outer end portion ofthel neck carrying a cross head l0 the end portions of which having close contact with the outer faces of the flanges 2,thus providing` means whereby'the. lower portion of the slid-e or member 8 is effectively maintained in working Vengagementwith the-member M yetcapable of being readily slid therealong" in either direction as'desired. Y z
The lower end portion of the slideor mem-v ber 8 above the .neck9 butin relatively close rproximity thereto carries a forwardly directed block ll also freely engaging within the space between the flanges 2.v To the outer face of this block 1l is secured by the bolts 12- or the like a cross member lll, Vthe'extremities of which also having close contact'with the outer faces of the flanges 2 to further maintain the lower'portio'nof thefslide or member 8 being maintained in operative position. The bolts 12, as herein disclosed, also serve' to hold the block 11l in applied or working position.
:The outerend portion of the plate at the los upper` end of the slide or member 8 is continued by the inwardly disposed extension plate l inclined in a direction toward the slide or member` 8, said extension plate readily passing within the upper end of the member M as the slide or member 8 is moved downing or clamping plate A is then disposed over the fabric and held'to the slide or member S by the bolts 1G or the like, each disposed through a suitable opening l? in the plate A Vand threaded through the slide or member 8.
The lower end portion of the member M has snugly inserted therein a reduced shank i8 of a 'p-uncturing'point 19, said point being eld in applied position by a rivet 2O or the like disposed through a side wall lof the member M and engagingV the shank 18. n
The side walls l of the member M at a desired distance above the lower end thereof are providedwith the transversely aligned and longitudinally disposed slots 2l through which is directed'an anchor plate 22. This plate 22 extendsa desired distance beyond the opposite sides of the member M and the outer rmargins of said Vplate are inclined downwardly toward the incline.
In placing the post the plate l is arranged a desired distance within the ground, thus assuring effective maintenance of the post in desired position.
From the foregoing member M on a predetermined descript-ion it is thought to be obvious that a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason .of the convenience and facility with whichit may be 'assembled and operatechand itwill also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles 'and' spiritk thereof and for this reason l do not wish lto be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except claimed.
