OIL-ENGINE-DRIV'EN CENTRIFUGAL AND SIMILAR PUMP.

This invention relates to the control of internal combustion engines and especially to an improved control for internal combustion engines driving centrifugal pumps or the like, and is especially adapted for use in installations drawing water from rivers or the like that in which the pump delivers a uniform quantity of water irrespective of supply level with a minimum of fuel consumption in the engine, and this quantity of water delivered by the pump is preferably the maximum discharge within the horse power or mean pressure limits of the engine. The present day governor or speed responsive control maintains the normal speed of the engine substantially constant without regard to the load thereon and in order to maintain the desired uniform pump delivery it is necessary to provide means for varying the normal speed of the engine to correspond to the various changes in the pumpsuction water level.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved control for the internal combustion engine of a centrifugal or similar nondisplacement. pump, by which the normal speed of the engine may be varied, in accordance with changes in the pump suction level, to that speed required. at each suction level for maintaining the pump discharge uniform throughout the various changes in suction level. i
A further object is to provide a simple and efficient control of general application in internal combustion engines combining a speed responsive control of thefuel for maintaining a constant normal speed with an adjustable control deterniiining the speed which the governor shall maintain constant, and I preferably include in the combination an adjustable control for fixing a variable limit on the maximum of fuel that can. be fed to the engine at the different normal speeds for which the engine is adjusted.

The lever 26 comprises a hub 27 secured to the eccentric fuel control shaft 15 by a pin 28 and provided with two parallel lever arms connected at their outer ends by a pivot pin 30 rotatable therein to which is secured'the forked end 31 of the adjustable link 24. A

The maximum amount of fuel which can be injected into the engine at any time is adjustably fixed by providing the hub 27 with a peripheral recess 34 forming a shoulder 35 which co-acts with a pin 36 carried by a hand lever 37 loosely mounted upon the eccentric fuel control shaft 15 between the hub 27 and the control box D. The hand lever 37 is moved by a handle 38 and is secured in the desired position by a bolt 39 and a thumb screw 42 which clamp upon an arcuately slotted plate secured to the control box D As is usual in speed responsive or governor controlled engines, the governor controls the fuel. injection to maintain the normal speed of the engine regardless of the changes in load no matter from, what-source these changes may arise. 7 1n the present invention I provide means for modifying the action of the governor by adding to or decreasing the strength of the governor spring to provide different new speeds for the engine which the governor will then operate to maintain constant. In the construction shown and described, my invention is applied to an irrigation installation to secure a pump discharge which will be uniform throughout the various changes in pump suction level coincident to such use.
For this purpose, as shown in Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, I extend the governor l'everarm b rend the shaft 22, that is to the side opposite the adjustable link 24 and place there on a suitable weight 43 whichby its position on the lever arm at one side or the other of the shaft 22 will determine the speed above or below normal which the governor will now operate to maintain constant. -Tl1e weight 43 may be secured inadjusted position by any suitable means, as by screw bolt 44.
The operation is as follows:
As the engine speeds up the governor weights 1'? move outward drawing lever 26 downward against the action of spring 32 through parts 23 and 24 to rotate the eccentric fuel control shaft 15 suitably and raise he outer end of the by-pass lever 14 where'- by the movement of the plunger tappet 8 causes the suction valve 3 to be opened earlier in the pump plunger stroke, securing the desired decrease in the fuel supp] to the engine to that quantity which is necessary to maintain the normal speed of the engine under its normal load. Upon a decrease in the engine speed, whether from overload or otherwise, the governor will reestablish the normal speed of the engine by an inward movement of the weights 17 which allows the spring P2 to move the eccentric fuel controlshaft 15 in the opposite direction, thus lowering the outer end of the bypass lever 14 producing a later opening of the suction valve 3 for bypassing andthus increasing the supply of fuel to the engine cylinders. The increase in the fuel supply to the engine is dependent not only on the governor but also on the position of the pin 36 and the engagement therewith of shoulder 35 which adjustably. fixes the maximum quantity of fuel which can be injected and thus prevents fouling of the engine, the governor being inoperable above this point, and this maximum feed may so reduce the speedthat the governor does not control at such speed.
The normal speed to be maintained by the governor control may be varied by aiding or opposing the movement of the governor by any suitable means. In the construction shownfor the purpose of illustration, the normal speed of the engine may be varied at will by adjusting the position of the weight 43 along the governor lever arm 23, and the governor will then act to maintain the new normal speed constant. By securing the weight 43 outside the shaft 22 the normal speed is increased to any desired extent as the weight 43 then aids the governor action tending to increase the fuel feed, and by securing at any point along the lever arm 23 between the shaft 22 and the adjustable link 24 the normal speed is decreased to any desired value, as the weight 43then opposes the governor action and tends to retard the governor movement on increase of speed.
-' The construction shown in Figures 1 to 5 is adjusted by hand, but various forms of automatic control of the normal speed may be used, such forms depending upon the type of engine and the conditions under which the engine is to operate. I
Thus in Figure 6 I have shown diagrammatically a construction in which the pump suction level automatically adjusts the normal speed of the engine to correspond to the pump suction level. In this construction the weight 43 is connected by link 45, to the end of the long arm of a T-levcr 46 pivotally secured to the control box D bypivot bolt 47. To one arm of the lever cross bar is secured the cable 48 which passes about suitable pulleys 49 and is secured at its opposite end to the float 50. Upon the opposite arm of the lever cross bar is secured a suitable weight 51. Upon a decrease in the pump suction level the float 50 moves downward and operates through cable 48, lever 46, and link 45 to move the weight 43 outward to increase the normal speed of the engine correspondingly to maintain the pump discharge uniform. lVhen the water level increases the float 5O slacks off on the cable 48 and. the Weight 51 operates to move the Weight 43 inward along the governor lever arm 23 thus correspondingly decreasing the normal speed of the engine.
An advantage of the constructions shown resides in the fact that they may readily be attached to any engine control box, but it will readily be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the constructions shown, as many modifications thereof may be made within the invention as defined by the claims.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with an internal combustion engine and a centrifugal or similar pump driven thereby and automatic fuel c0ntrol devices for the engine, of adjustable means controlled by the pump suction head to automatically vary the engine speed on changes in said head to maintain a uniform discharge by the pump.
2. The combination with an internal combastion engine and a centrifugal orsimilar pump driven thereby and automatic fuel control devices for the engine including a gov ernor for maintaining a constant normal ongine speed, of adjustable means controlled by the pump suction head to automatically vary the normal engine speed on changes in said head to maintain a uniform discharge by thepump.
3. The combination with an internal combustion engine and a centrifugal orsimilar pump driven thereby and automatic fuel control. devices for the engine including a gov-- ernor for maintaining a constant normal en gine speed, of a weight adjustable to aid or oppose the governor action, a float controlled by the pump suction head, and connections between the weight and float whereby the normal engine speed is automatically varied on change in said head to maintain a uniform discharge by the pump.
