WEBBING BUCKLE.
Application filed May 15,
My invention relates to webbing buckles for garters, suspenders and the like and has for its object to provide a new and improved Webbing buckle having a wire link provided with new and improved means for securing the webbing thereto.
The following is a description of my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 shows a portion of a garter comprising a buckle embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the buckle with the webbing adjacent thereto on the line 2 2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same:
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the buckle of Fig. 1 with the clamping lever raised;
Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5, Fig. 4;
Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 are front elevations of modifications of the link and web securing means. applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 2 is a buckle embodying my invention applied to a webbing 4: which carries at its lower end a loop 6. y The buckle is composed of a wire link 8 which may be open at one end. the other end of the link having a crossbar 10 and vertically extending side arms 12. Upon the top portion of the link a lever clamp 14 having clamping teeth 16 is pivotally mounted by trunnions 18. 20 is a web securing plate having lateral extensions 22 which embrace the side portions 12 so as to secure the plate to those portions. This plate is provided on its front sidewith an upturned portion 24, provided with teeth 26 for securing the webbing to the plate. The body portion of the plate extends upwardly as far as the top of the upturned portion 24 and preferably a little higher. as shown. One end of the webbing is placed between the body portion of the plate and the upturned portion 24 and the plate is then swaged upon the webbing, as shown in Fig. 2, gripping it so as to hold it firmly in place. The portions 12 are provided at their ends with laterally turned ends 28 which prevent the plate 20 from sliding off them. In the form shown in Fig. 1 its laterally turned port-ions extend inwardly and are beneath the plate 20 so as to lie in its 1928. Serial No. 277,866.
path. In forming this buckle the links 8 are first formed and then the lever clamp 12 and plate 20 are mounted thereon by bending extensions on the lever clamp so as to form the trunnions 18 and binding the extensions on the plates so as to form the embracing portions 22. The end of the webbing is then se cured to the plate by swaging the portion 24 so as to form a web gripping socket with the body of the plate. The webbing asses over the top of the body portion 20 o the plate, which is at least as high as the top of the teeth 26, and then is passed downward behind the plate 20 through the loop 6 and upward in front of the portion 24 and through the link again, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The sides of the link are bent in their mea dial portions, i. e., intermediate between their ends, so that the top of the link lies in a position slightly forward of the plane of the lower portions of the side portions. The body and upturned portion of the plate are substantially parallel to the plane of the lower ing portions of the link. so that although the buckle is one which clamps webbing against webbing, the thickness of the buckle is only that resulting from the link and two thicknesses of webbing and the lever of the clamp.
The buckle issimple to manufacture and while strong and durable is thin, and, furthermore, clamps the webbing securely in any position in which it is adjusted.
In the modification shown in 6, 8' constitutes the link and 20 the plate. case the lateral extensions 28 of Fig. 4 lying beneath the plate 20 are omitted and in lieu thereof the embracing portions of the plate and the underlying parts of the downward projections 12 are swaged at 30 so as to hold the plate to the link.
In Fig. 7 the link 8 has its lower end por- ,tions inclined inwardly at an angle'and the plate 20 has its lateral extension 22 bent around those inclined portions, the inclinm In this tions on the depending parts preventing the plate from slipping oil the ends of the link.
In the form shown in Fig. 8 the link 8 is a closed link and the plate 20 surrounds the lower limb oi the link having; lateral extensions 22 embracing the depending portions which are held against downward movement by the lower limb of the link.
In the form shown in 9 the link 8* has depending portions which at their lower ends are inclined outwardly and are surrounded by lateral extensions 22* on the plate, the in clined portions in this case also preventing the plate from slipping oil the link.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
