Application inea August a, wie.` serial No. 12eme i This invention relates to a simple forin of appliance for skiving strips of leather and similar material, such for example, as` the tapes of a tapeV condenser. The appliance is small and compact and may beeinployedwithout removing the tapes from the 4condenser when it is idesired to repair or splice the tapes.
The object ot' the invention is to provide such an appliance of simpleconstruction and one Which may be readily operated manually by anyone having the care of a. ploying such strips or tapes.
These and other objects and features of the` invention will appear more fully from the accompanying descriptions and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
The drawings illustrate a simple and'pref ferred form of appliance particularly useful `in skiving comparatively narrow strips of material such as the tapesI of tape ondensers already mentioned Where no great amount of power is required to effect the skiving operation.

This appliance is particularly designed for the skiving of comparatively narrow strips auch as leather tapes of a tape condenser where the ends of the tapes `are spliced together in i the formation or repair of the tapes. A portion of such a tape is shovvn in Fig. 2 Where the skived or Wedge shaped end l is shown overlapping thet skived or wedgey shaped end 2. y The appliance in the preferred forni illustrated comprises a base 3` formed preferably of metal and presenting an upstanding support herein shown as the vertical webs 4 eX- tending upwardlyon eachside of the base. These Webs constitute the support for the skiving knife. This knife has a flat body 5 machine ein and a bevelled'cuttingedge. It will thus beseen that by turning the set screw 24 the bar 21 will be raisedor lowered to clamp or release the strip 15.
The longitudinal sliding movement of the slide bar 12 in the base is effected manually in any` suitable manner. Preferably a lever 25 is fulcrumed at 26 on the rear end of one of the flanges 11 of the base and a link 27 is connected at one end at 28 to this lever and at the other end to a stud 29 secured midway of the slide bar. A thumb piece 30 is provided secured to the side of the base so that the operator placing his thumb against this thumb piece and his fingers over the handle of the lever 25 may readily exert the force required to move the slide bar and effect the skiving operation..
At the forward end of the base a cross bar 431 is provided secured by set screws 32 to the 'flanges 11 of the base to hold down and guide the slide bar.
It will be seen that as the slide bar is moved forwardly or to the left, with the strip l5 clamped to the slide bar and extending over the uppermostv roll 14, that as the wedge 4shaped portion 13 of the slide bar forces the rolls 14 bodily vertically upward, the skiving knife will cut through the strip at the required angle. y In order to vary the skiving angle there is preferz'ibly provided a resilient bearing plate ofmetal 33 located in the groove of the base and extending between the base and slide bar. This bearing' plate is secured as by a rivet ll'at its forward end to the base. A set screw 35 threaded vertically through the base at the rear end abuts the bottom face of the bearing plate 83. Consequently by adjusting the set screw 35 the bearing plate may be raised more or less at its rearward end as shown in Fig. ll, thus correspondingly raising the wedge shaped end 13 of the slide vbar and varying the s kiving angle. Either or both the wedge shaped feature 13 of the slide bar and the vertically adjustable resilient plate may be employed as desired to produce the required skiving angle.
It `will be seen that the device is small and compact and that it may be readily used to skive the end of a tape or belt without removing the tape or belt from any machine upon which it may be in use, a feature which is of great advantage. y
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured 'by Letters Patent, is: i y. v
' 1. A strip skiving appliance comprising, a. base having an upstanding support, a knife secured to the support with its edge transversely of and above the base, a bar mounted to sli-de `longitudinally on the base, a resilient 'bearing plate secured to the base atoitsffoi ward end and extending between the base and the slide bar, means for adj usting vertically of the base the rear end of the bearing plate, a roll device resting on the slide bar beneath and parallel with the knife edge and mounted on the support for rotary and vertical bodily movement, a strip clamp on the slide bar forward of the knife, and means for moving the slide bar longitudinally on the base to skive a strip held in the clamp and resting on the roll device.
2. A strip skiving appliance comprising, a base having an upstanding support, ay knife securedv to the support with its edge transversely of and above the base, a bar mounted to slide longitudinally on the base, a resilient bearing plate secured to the base at its forward end and extending between the base and the slide bar, means for adjusting ver tically of the base the rear end of the bearing plate, an even number plurality of superimposed rolls arranged in vertical aligm'nent beneath and parallel with the knife edge and mounted on the support for rotary and ver tical bodily movement with the lowermost roll resting against the slide bar and the uppermost againstthe strip during the skiving operation whereby the roll peripheries thus in engagement with the slide bar and strip travel in the same direction therewith,` a strip clamp on the slide bar forwardof the knife, and means for moving the slide bar longitudinally on its base to skive a strip held in the cla-mp resting on the roll device.
3. A strip skiving appliance comprising, a base havingan upstanding support, a knife secured to the support with its edge transversely of and above the base, a bar having a vertically wedge shaped rear end mounted to slide longitudinally on the base, a roll de- .vice resting on the slide bar beneath and parallel with the knife edge and mounted on the support for rotary and vertical` bodily movement, a strip clamp on the slide bar forward of the knife, a` lever connected to the base and to the slide bar and presenting a handle projecting laterally from the base in position to be grasped by the hand and operated to effect the longitiulinal movement of the slide bar to skive a strip held in the clamp and resting on the roll device.
4C. A-strip skiving appliance having construction defined in claim 3 together with a thumb piece on the forward end of the base to receive the thumb 'of the hand grasping the handle and thus assist in the operation of the lever. y
