PERCY C. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN F. MEYER, OF CHICAGO, i
I ILLINOIS. i
STEREOS COPIC-EXHIBITING-MAGHINE REEL.
Application filed. August 29, 1927. Seriai No. 216,013.
This invention relates to reels for stereo scopic exhibiting machines and particularly, though not exclusively, to that type of exhibiting machine which is operated by coins whereby the photographic cards are brought to proper sight position; and to iniiprovements in the reel holders or-leaves; and also to the method oi? mounting the cards in the reel holders. h
The object or the invention to provide a novel and improved reel for positively bringing the cards to proper sight position and in proper sequence, whereby the opera-' tor or customer is provided with a better and more realistic presentation than can be obtained in the ordinary machine.
Another object of the invention. is to provide curved holders or leaves for holding the cards so that the card when inserted in the holder will also be curved thereby-keep ing the card in a rigid condition and pre-- venting the edges or any other part of the card from curling or bending out of shape.
Another object is to provide a reel in which the holders or arms are provided with improved card holding means so that the cards can be easily and quickly applied or detached and which will firmly hold the card in opi-srative position on the holder.
And a further object is to p rovid 2a notched card which is :iulapted to be easily mounted in the holders and held in operative position and which will prevent the card from shifting its position so that each card always maintained in proper position.
The accompanying; drawings show a selected embodiment of the invention and the views therein are as follows: j
Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improved reel showing the manner in which the holders are arranged and the various positions the hold-' ers attain during the operation of the machine. n
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the holders. I
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
Fig. i is a sectional view on the line -4 ofFig. 2. V
Fig. 5 1s a detail perspective view oi a y Fi card which is employed for use in my deto vice. i
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a card in,- serted in one of the holders. i
Fig. Tis a'horizontal sectional view taken throughthe shaft of'the reel shown in. Fig. 1. 5.
F g. 8 is a detail section on line 88 oi? Fig.9, and i I 7 Hg. 9 a detail section on line 9-9 oi Referring to the drawings 1 designates an axle, carrying the plates? to which the card holders 3 are pivotally attached.
The axle 1 has fixed thereon by meansot pin L and screw 4 a bushing 4rto which a pair of plates 2 are fixed in any suitable man- 6 nor such as by screws 5 passing through the plates and threadedly engaging thebush- Pins 6 pro'eet outwardly from the sides eithe bushing to engage holes 7 provided in the plates, as shown in Figs. 'l and '8 This provides that each plate is in proper axial alinement so that the circumferential apertures 8 in one plate will aline with those inthe otherplate. 7r
The holders 3 are curved or bowed. as shown in Fig. 3, and have a depression to provide a rib 9 in the body portion 10 to strengthen the holder and add rigidity there-- to. The outer end ll and the inner or pi rot end E2 of the bodyhavc lateral I'JYOjGCtlOTlS ll, 12, from which the ears 'lfiland 1 1- are struck up to engage the bottom 15 and top 16 of the card. i At the pivot end ofthe holder-and beyondthe ears 1% the projections 12 are out I away at 1'? to provide shoulders ISQThe ex plates so that the holders are spaced from each other. When the holders attain vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, only one holder at a time will fall during rotation of the reel. v a
The holder is also provided with a pair of protnberance s 22 and which engage the notches Q land 25 of the card 26. This pro vision maintains the card in proper position and prevents lateral shifting of the card;
while the cars 13 and i l into which the bottom and top of the card fit preventinwardor on:
holders are held with the cardinserted there 7 in to be viewed by the operator.
A pin 31 projecting inwardly from a. post 32 fastened to the bottom of the machine adapted to hold a plurality of holders whereby the uppermost card is held in proper sight position. As the reel revolves the angle of the holders in relation to the horizontal axis of the reel becomes less or sharper and the lowermost holder or the one which rests on the pin will drop therefrom. This arrange ment provides that the card which is being Viewed will remain in proper focus'until a subsequent holder carrying the nextcard of the series fallsinto si ht position. W' hile the lowermost holder in each position may not drop simultanenously they will each drop intermittently in certain spaced time relation to each other.
In my other application filed concurrently herewith I have constructed a machine which is adapted to show five different series of picture cards during one complete revolution of the reel; each series showing thirteen different views. It is to be understood, however, that the reel and the mechanism controlling it may be made of any size desired and equipped to show a greater orle ss number of series or it may show only one continuous series of cards during the complete revolution of the wheel.
Changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof and I reserve the. right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims:
I claim: H
