IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SHADE ROLLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,401, dated November 23, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, ANTHONY RoELoFs, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Window-Shade Rollers, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to so construct the cast-iron end pieces and pulleys of window-shade rollers that they may be more readily, efl'ectively, and truly applied to the rollers; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 exhibits perspective views of one end of the window-shade roller and of the pulley before they are fitted together; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the roller and pulley fitted together; and Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line 1 2, Fig. 2.

Cast-iron end pieces and pulleys of windowshade rollers have heretofore been secured to the rollers by means of nails passed through openings in the said end pieces or pulleysa plan which is tedious, insecure, and inconvenient, and by which the proper centeringof the roller is not always insured. The pulleys and end pieces have also been provided with conical or cylindrical threaded or plain pins, projections, and screws, for penetrating the roller, to which but a very insecure hold is obtained, owing to the form of the pins, and the direction of the grain of the wood.

I overcome these objections by casting on the end pieces and pulleys A the pins 0, preferably of the form shown in the drawing, these pins being driven into holes b, made in the center of the ends of the roller, the said holes being somewhat less in diameter than the pins. I prefer to form these central openings b in the roller during the manufacture of the same, so that when the pins to are driven into the same the proper central position of the end pieces or pulleys will be insured, and the journals d will be concentric with the roller.

It will be understood that these holes b extend some distance from the end of the roller, so as to allow pieces to be cut from the ends of the same Without necessitating the boring of a new hole for the reception of the pins.

Although I have illustrated my invention as applied to the pulley endof the shade-roller, the mode of attachment of the end piece at the opposite end is exactly similar, and will be readily understood without description.

I prefer to employ the longitudinally-ribbed pin a shown in the drawing, because it can be easily driven into the opening b of the roller, and cannot turn independently of the same after being driven; but it will be evident that pins having any number of ribs may be employed without departing from the main feature of my invention.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a window-shade roller, having a central opening, b, and an end piece or pulley having a central ribbed pin, a, of uniform diameter throughout its length, and adapted to the said opening, as set forth.

2. The within-described ribbed pin a, of uniform diameter throughout its length, and combined with, and forming part of, the end piece or pulley of a window-shade roller, as set forth.
