SHIELDED FILE Filed April 5, 1928 Patented Mar. 5, 1929.
hl'l'E STATES JAMES M. LAIDLAW, OF LOS ANGEL-ES, CALIFORNIA;
SHIELDED FILE.
Application filed April 5,
This invention relates to paper files, and more especially to that type oi file comprising a pointed shaft extending rigidly from a supporting base.
fin object 01" the invention is the provision of a file which comprises a pointed shaft 6X- tending rigidly from a supporting base,.having incorporated therewith a shield closely overlying the pointed end of: the shaft, so as to preclude the possibility of injuring the hand of the user upon said pointed end.
Another object is the provision of a file of the character described, which is of very simple construction, including a very few component parts, and which is of suchori'ian'iental design that it is adaptable for use upon any typeoi' ol'lice desk.
With the "'3. ageing other objects in view which will be made n'ianilcst in the following detailed description and speci cally pointed out in the appended claiin, reference had to the accompanying drawings for illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of my proved, file with a sheet of paper positioned t iereupon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, top plan view of the file of Fig. 1.

in terms of: broad inclusion, my invention c niempia the inclusion with a paper file i the weh known type, embodying a pointed swait rigid with a supporting baseoi": a shielo n'iount over the the user of the file against injury upon point.
In. greater detail, the preferred cinbodiment of my improved file comprises a base 6 formed of any suitable material such as cast iron or woo A shaft 7 is rigid at its lower end with the base 6, and extends vertically therefrom with the upper end 8 of the shaft sharpened to a point to facilitate the piercing of sheets of paper in the act of positioning them upon the file.
A shield 11 is provided for the point 8 of the shaft 7. This shield comprises a strip 12 preferably of rigid inetal. The lower end 13 of the shield is enlarged to facilitate its being secured rigidly'to the base 6st apoint spaced from the lower end of the shaft 7 Thestrip pointed end of the shaft to protect +11 i N beveled ed upon the same base and ext 5;
name to this specification.
1928. Serial No. 267,510;
12 extends an 'ularly from the base 6 .to a point adjacent the pointedend 8 of the shaft 7; andthe upper end 14: of the strip 12 is bent to extend substantially horizontally over the point 8 as clearly shown in Fig. It is to be understood that the horizontal section M is spaced above the point 8, and the sloping portion of the strip 12 is spaced to one side oil the point 8. This makes it possible slip one or more sheets of paper 16 betnmenv the point 8 and the shield 11, after which the sheet sheets may be pressed. downwards onto the point 8, which will thus be caused to pierce the paper a point spaced from the edge thereof. Thus it may. be seen that a la; may be po. tioned' upon the file, permitting the file to be used in the sanie way as the conventional sticker file, to retain the plurality of sheets of paper together. The inclusion of the shield 11 however, precludes the possibility of the users stabbing his hand with the point 8 of the shaft 7, when positioning paper thereupon.
The frontl? and the rear edge 18 of the base 6, are preferably vertical. This facilitates grasping the base to lift the file. The side edges 19 and the corner edges 21 between the side edges 19 and the front and rear edges 1 d 18 respectively, are preferably is clearly shown in Fig. 2. This construction provides a base which is not only very i l shaft? and Sllllll uch an ornaments ed upon any ty .i any place it may be that it nlay be i: i desk, or in tact Vtrious change the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by theappended claim.
I claim:
A file comprising .a base, a pointed, rigid shaft extending" vertically "from the base, and a shield e0: iprising strip rigid at one end with the base at a point spaced from the bottom ol -the shaft andextending in singularity with said shait to a. point adjacent the pointed number of sheets of paper 16 and iully capable of ri end of the shaft, the upper end o'tthe strip being spaced above andldisposed substantiah ly horizontally over saidpoint.
In testimony whereof I have signed my n nes M. LAIDLAWQ, I
