Patented Mar. 5, 1929.
ARTHUR E. SMITH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
MEDICI AL VAPPLIVCATOR.
Application filed. June 7,
This invention relates to medicinalapplicaters. y I
The general object of the invention isto provide an automatic measuring medicinal applicator whichis adapted for. accurately measuring and introducing medicinal compounds into the vagina for medicinal purposes In treating femalediseases it is essential to provide an accurate, convenient, sanitary means for introducing the desired drug or compound into the vagina. Myinvention satisfies these requirements and is particularly useful in treating such diseases as catarrhal I inflan'miations, vaginitis, cervicitis, lcucorrhea, gonorrhea, etc.
The more common drugs which may be employed in using my invention are, boroglycerin; icthyol-glycerin-; guaiacol-glycerin; tannic acid; mercurochrome, and other semi-viscous medicinal compounds.
One embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an applicator embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the applicator.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view showing the positions taken when the applicator is being filled.
Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the position of parts aftcr'the applicator has been operated.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view, and
Fig. 6 is a partial sectional view of the applicator.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters I have shown an applicator embodying the features of my invention as 10. This applicator comprises a hollow body, or receptacle portion 11 having a hollow elongated neck 12 thereon. The body and neck are both preferably cylindrical and the neck has a bulbous member 14- secured at the end thereof. This member is provided with a discharge opening 15.
The end of the body opposite the neck is provided with a threaded closure 16 through which an operating member 17 projects. This member has a piston 18 fixed thereon and also has a rod 19 thereon. The rod 19 is provided with a valve member 20 at its ex tremity which is adapted to fit' in the open ing 15 to close this opening. j
The piston 18 is provided with a sleeve 21' and a'closure 21 which. in the position shown 1926. Serial No, 114,070.
in Fig. 3 terminatesbeyond an aperture 22, which is surrounded by an internally threaded collar. 23 arranged externally on the body 11. ,A collapsible tube is indicated as at 24 and this tube is adapted to be removably secured to the threaded collar 23.
In operating the device the tube 24 is. po-
sitioned as shown, and is squeezed or'operated to cause :material to pass therefrom through the aperture22 intothe body 11 and thence into the neck 12. The tube is squeeze-d until the material begins to pass out of the aperture 15. This indicates that the receptacle 11 is full and that the device is ready for use. To use the device itis holding it in one hand, the knob 25 on the member 1? is than pressed to cause the sleeve 21 to moveto close the aperture 22,and to force the contents through the opening 15. V-Ihen the piston 18 has been moved to its extreme position the valve member 20 will close the passage through the opening 15.
p The member 17 is preferably provided with graduations which indicate the capacity of the chamber 36 in front of the closure 21 on the piston. By observing the graduations the amount of the preparation injected may be observed and regulated. g
If desired, the piston may comprisea cup as shown in Fig. (3. This cup is secured to the operating member 17 and functions in the.
same manner as does the construction first described, I
The piston 18 has length greater than the length of its movement so that when the piston is advanced it maintains the aperture 22 closed thereby preventing the contents of the tube 24: from escaping behind the piston.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In an applicator, a receptacle, an elongated neck projecting from said receptacle, a plunger movable in said receptacle and adapted to force l'naterial from said recep tacle through said neck, a discharge opening in said neck, a valve for closing said opening, means to connect said valve and plunger for simultaneous movement and operating means on said plunger and projecting from said receptacle. p 2. In an applicator, a receptacle having a neck thereon, a bulbous member secured on positioned by said neck, a closure threaded to said recep- I tacle opposite to said neck, a piston member in saidreceptacle, a handle" for operating gated rod on said piston, said bulbous member having an aperture therein and said rod having a valve member thereon for closing said aperture.
3. In a measuring applicator, a receptacle having an elongated neck thereon, .a bulbous member secured on said neck, a collar mounted on said receptacle and having internal threads therein, said receptacle being apertured Within said collar, a closure threaded to said receptacle opposite to said neck, a piston member in said receptacle, a member for operating said piston, a sleeve in' said receptacle and on said piston, said sleeve in one position allowing access to said aperture, and in another position closing access to said aperture, an elongated rod on said member, said bulbous member having an aperture therein and said rod having a valve member thereon tor closmg said last mentioned aperture.
