IMPROVEMENT IN FRAMES FOR WOVEN-WIRE MATTRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,333, dated November 23, 1875; application filed August 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BODA, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Woven- Wire Mattresses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the upper side of my improved frame with the web detached. I i g. 2 is a plan view of the lower side of the same; and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of said frame, showing the position of the Web.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The object of my invention is to increase the strength and durability of theframe of a woven-wire mattress, and to render the same more easily extensible in a longitudinal direction; and to this end it consists, principally, in the means employed for increasing or lessening the length of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in the peculiar construction of the frame, by means of which it is enabled to withstand longitudinal and vertical pressure, substantially as is hereinafter shown.

In the annexed drawings, A and A represent two rails or bars, which are each connected at one end to or with metal blocks B and B, and from thence diverge, and at their outer ends are connected together by means of across-rail, O. With-in the lower side, at the transverse center of one of the blocks B, is provided a sleeve or housing, I), which, interiorly, has a square opening, b, while upon the opposite block B is cast or otherwise se cured at bar, I), that corresponds to and may be caused to pass into said opening b, such construction enabling said blocks, with their fIztIll6-S6CtlODS, to be connected together and held in relative positions laterally, while in a longitudinal direction they may be brought together or separated to a distance equal to the length of said bar 11 without becoming disconnected. Upon the upper side of each block 13 and B is, respectively, provided a vertical lug, b and b, through one of which is formed a threaded opening, that receives and contains a screw, D, while within the other of said lugs is formed a recess for the reception of the end of said screw. A flat head, 61, upon the outer end of the screw D enables the latter to be rotated, so as to press the frame-sections apart or permit the same to be closed together. Upon the outer side of each cross-bar O is provided a clamp, c, for confining thereto the end of the woven-wire web, which, when in place, may be distended and any required degree of tension produced by turning the screw D, so as to separate longitudinally the frame-sections. Theframe thus constructed has sufficient space between its central portions and the woven-wire web to prevent contact between said parts when in use, while, from the inverted-arch form of said frame, great strength to resist the longitudinal pressure or strain is secured.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1. In combination with the sections of the frame shown, the blocks B and B, provided, respectively, with the sleeve 1) and bar I), and with the lugs b and 11, and the screw D passing through said lug b and impinging upon said lug b, said parts being arranged to:

operate in the manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.

2. The hereinbefore-described extensible frame, consisting of the rails A and A, blocks B and B, provided, respectively, with the sleeve b and bar b, and the cross rails G and 0, extending between the outer ends of said rails A and A, all arranged in the manner shown, so as to form an inverted arch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
